The 1990 Treasure Island is one of the greatest films ever made

I'm partial to the 1950 treasure Island myself.. I think treasure Island is superior to treasure planet. But then I dislike sci fi

I agree, many of Charlton Heston’s performances are considered “over the top”.

Definitely one of the most influential literary villains of his time. You can even see it just on the surface level by how many fictional pirate came to copy off of his features, making what was meant to be unusual about him now seem stereotypical as a result. He his to fictional pirates what Dracula is to vampires. I'd say he probably also helped popularize more morally layered villains who came much later. In a similar way that Darth Vader helped make the "fallen hero" villain archetype that much more mainstream after the original Star Wars trilogy.

I really like this version of Treasure Island. Charles Heston did do real good as Silver, but I sure do like Oliver Reed as Billy Bones, that the greatest anyone has ever done with character. I’ve watched over and over.❤️☠️

did you ever see the 1978 anime? i think it adds even more to silver's character. especially the ending, when jim meets him in a pub somewhere at an african haven and it's entirely left ambiguous, if he recognized jim or not. it's implied he does, but not clear.

This is the best movie of Treasure Island.this treatment shows the these are real pirates. Oliver Reed, what does outstanding with his portrayal of Billy bones when he acted when he fired his pistol and it was just a flash in the pan he did not shoot he looks like he’s been betrayed, and then, when he chases black dog out of the end, he swings and hits the bottom of the sign that says Benbow

You're right, Oliver Reed did a fine job as Billy Bones.

Long John Silver is the greatest pirate. The best actors to play this awesome pirate is Robert Newton, Jack Palance, Tim Curry, Wallace Beery, and Charton Heston.

There are other similarities between both Jim and Silver. 1) Both are convinced of their moral correctness. 2) Both are willing to switch sides and betray others to achieve their ends. 3) Killing is beyond neither, though neither truly seem to be deriving any great pleasure and view it as an unfortunate necessity toward achieving their ends. 4) They start on opposite sides at the inn, unite for the voyage, are on opposing sides during the mutiny, join together again from necessity against the remaining pirates, and at last separate for the final time as Silver sails into Jim's past. 5) Both of them share names with two brothers who were Jesus closest disciples, James and John. 6) There is another instance of mirrors in that the Scripture appears to imply that James is older than John. 7) Both Silver and Jim end their time together being feared by the remaining pirates, though for very different reasons. 8) In the end, neither Jim nor Silver actually get what they wanted from the island, but both are rather improved for having made the journey.

I don't know that Long John silver doesn't enjoy killing. In the chapter of the book where Long John silver kills tom, a sailor that refused to join him, he seems to have a vicious streak and literally stabs him over and over. Wether out of rage or pleasure I guess it's difficult to say, but still, it was different than just shoot to kill. Long John silver in the book was a little bit darker than in all coming adaptations. That being said, even though he murders a sailor, he can't bring himself to kill Jim Hawkins even when Jim admits to being the one who foiled a lot of silver's plans.. and he even wrathfully stops his men from carrying out any revenge. Lots of psychology there I suppose

It's implied in the book that Silver would have killed Jim had the map led him to the treasure as he had hoped. Thus, Silver is a double villain.

Long John is the perfect villain, he's Smart, ruthless and a good fighter. It's a good job when we see him, he only has one leg

I find Charlton Heston's performance as Long John the most convincing of those who played the part. I particularly take note of his having one leg and the use of a single crutch which I can relate using one crutch with the same disability though I am missing my left leg. I suspect it would not be easy getting around on a rolling sailing ship.

Great video. I have a top ten list of underrated and great villains. 1. Johnny Ringo from Tombstone 2. Eric Qualan from Cliffhanger 3. Nino Brown from New Jack City 4. Rico from Paid N Full 5. Bricktop from Snatch 6. Lil Z from City of God 7. Sgt. Waters from A Soldier's Story 8. Col. Jessup from A Few Good Men 9. God from In Too Deep 10. Edward Norton from Primal Fear. Can you do one on either one of these. These are my favorite villains from my favorite films, thanks. Great content by the way.

What's interesting about Long John silver is even though he kills an honest sailor for refusing to join him, rather viciously, when Jim admits to being the one that ruined all of his plans and rating them out to the captain, Long John silver actually prevents his men from killing him. Quite an interesting moral struggle. The 1950 movie makes it even more profound when silver straight up considered shooting Jim and can't find himself able to.

YES, even though Silver killed Tom for cursing him, after Jim had failed to eat his salt pork stew, ran from him on the longboat, and neglected to give him a hand up what did old Long John have to say to Jim? -"Well Jim I always wanted for you to join us and take your fair share of the treasure. Now you haven't got a choice."

He is the archetype anti hero. He has the cunning of Frank Underwood, the brutality of William Munny and the charisma of Vic Mackey.

I think you lost the social part of Long John. Yes he's a ruthless cutthroat but... would a man of his tallent but qlso his standing be able to make a name for himself in the royal navy? No Hes lowborne. Piracy was the only chance he had. He was far better as a captain than Smallet and far better leader than the squire, and yet he becomes a cook.
@the98themperoroftheholybri33
@the98themperoroftheholybri33 4 месяца назад
That's not correct, many notable royal navy captains started off as a low ranking member of the royal navy, some of the best (presumably because they understood the men which served them). Pirates of this time period were essentially naval mercenaries which have gone rogue to pillage and raid to turn a profit. Long John probably was desperate for the treasure because what future would the world have for an elderly cripple in that period of history? Not much of a future
