In The Mood For Love Press Conference at the TIFF Toronto International Film Festival with Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung. English without subtitles. Interview with the 2 main actors of the acclaimed 2000 film of Wong Kar Wai.
@@SO-rq3pm I think there's a misconception here about introverts. I know many people who are introverts but have no problem with public speaking or being confident. Tony is more of a shy person and private, hence, he's not comfortable in front of crowds.
Just saw this after watching 'In the Mood for Love' like 5 times. So proud of these two native Hong Kong brilliant actor and actress. Particularly love Maggie Cheung. She epitomises a lovely gal from Hong Kong - an embodiment of the best of east and west, very cheerful, true to herself, optimistic, frank and candid.
September 29, 2023. 23 years of In The Mood For Love today. "He remembers those vanished years. As though looking through a dusty window pane, the past is something he could see, but not touch. And everything he sees is blurred and indistinct."
😂😂❤ I love this conference so much. I came for Tony, but I was surprised and loved Maggie. She is beautiful, elegant and full of energy. And Tony Cute 😂😂
Thanks for uploading this interview. This is definitely my no one favorite film and l love every bit of it. Great to hear my two super idols talking about the film too.
I hope this doesnt sound rude, but I'm so blown away by how good their command of English is, compared to other HK actors in their age bracket all... I'm even more in love with both of them than I was before! 😍😍😍
@@chengepaul I know, right?? I've loved Tony since I was a child.. And Maggie only so-so but after listening to this, I'm like "She's so hot! Because of her intellect and fiestiness - in English!" 🥰
I came in just to check out their English and I am blown away! Maggie speaks with a chic (colonial?) British accent! That is definitely not a Cantonese English accent. Wowzers. Where do we hear that anymore?
Maggie was raised in both Hong Kong and Britain which is probably why she has an British accent. As for Tony, since he grew up in British Hong Kong which was a British colony till 1997, safe to say he was exposed to a lot of English throughout his life, unlike in mainland China.
Maggie moved to England when she was 10, went to high school there. That is why she speaks fluent English. In Hk, English was the only official language till 70s. The HK government also set up the rule that every child must attend schools up to 14 years old, at least. Most may not speak fluently but have the basic English knowledge. When the HK movies started to participate in the International Film Festivals. The movie companies start to fund the actors to learn speaking English.
@@nephronpie8961 That's not it though. Plenty of the other people (probably 90%) of his generation speak with a very 'Hong Kong accent', which is very discernible and sometimes indecipherable.. the only ones who speak with a standard Brit accent are those who lived in the UK and studied there or who went to International schools maybe. For instance, the actress Jessica Hsuan went to Imperial College in the UK and speaks with a standard English accent that could even pass off as Singaporean, similar to Maggie. So it's not about HK teaching folks English (I don't know why you would bring in China when we're talking about HK actors here? It's a useless comparison..). Everyone learns English in school, yes, but not all of them speak as well as them (Maggie, particularly). And that's a compliment..! 😊
I love the movie how they represented themselves and all the perfect and intense scenes of the movie Maggie and Tony are really the best and finest actors and movies of Wong Kar-wai like Days of being wild ,Mood for love, 2046 ,Chungking express I love all the movies of wong kar wai it always leaves a deep impact on you.
Just brilliant personalities and balance between both , an introvert and an extrovert and no wonder Tony is the go to man for Wong Kar Wai. Maggie perspective is just wonderful , could hear her talk for days and also being a method actor in Wongs films can be very very taxing. Wonderful interview felt like it was over too soon :D . Thank you.
@@itsjemmabondEnglish is taught in elementary school through college in HK. But the reason why Tony leung speaks well is that he went to English private school. (And Maggie grew up in England I believe). He doesn't represent the English level of most HKers.
i have always been a huge fan of hers so i expected her to be gorgeous as usual, but i am surprised how handsome he is quite naturally, even more handsome than in his films, ...he is so charming, that little smile of his. what an amazing couple, no wonder that their chemistry was so famous, hard to find a more charming couple...and they haven't aged a day..? i cannot believe it ... it is also fascinating how differently that they feel about wong kar wai s style
Yo he visto la película y es preciosa y única, los actores son muy guapos los dos. Me gusta cómo tratan su historia de amor en los años que era tan complicados de entender por la sociedad.Maravillosa la película!!!
In the Mood for Love changed my entire perspective of Maggie Cheung from just being Jackie Chan's girlfriend in the Police Story movies to stunning leading lady of cinema.
@@giapnguyendangthi1171 But her English wasn't as good when she returned to Hong Kong as a late teen. Obviously she's put some effort after being a star.
@@SO-rq3pm I mean it's one of the advantages of her, Maggie Cheung( Trương Mạn Ngọc in Vietnamese) always try to make an effort at everything she does. I'm surprised because I didn't realise earlier that she speaks English fluently.!
Been watcin them on Cantonese movie all this time. Didn't know they speak good English. Both are talented film ⭐. Beautiful movie excelentte fotografia.
Since Hong Kong was a British colony until 1997, it's very common for Hong Kongers to be proficient (if not fluent) in English. According to the most recent poll I could find, 65% of the residents polled said they could speak, read, and write English, though the poll did not state to what degree of fluency.
Maggie actually grew up in England, spending much of her teenage years in UK and still holding British citizenship up to this day. Tony attended English school when Hong Kong was still a British colony.
@@Mr_DPZ Their English is exceptionally good even compared to many educated people from Hong Kong (e.g. professors in universities). Maggie didn't speak in English as well as then when she just returned to Hong Kong from UK. Obviously both of them are very talented not only in acting but also languages.
some of these reporters are not at all listening to questions and answers, and just waiting to ask the same questions over that have already been basically posed and answered already, some behave as if possibly that they don't understand english well, and just have to pose a question and record their answer for their bosses. at one point, tony leung gives a sheepish smile, and passes the question to maggie, because it is the same question as has been answered before. he is too polite to call the reporter an idiot. i feel sorry for the actors, they are so gorgeous and have worked so hard already, that they have to answer so many questions on improvisation, when they did so much work inventing the film in improvisation, without script, and then to be grilled on it. haha.....suppressed, repressed, restrained... not suppressive... hard for actors to answer when the reporters use such downright wrong vocab
I have the same thoughts. I hate it that when she laughs and makes jokes, etc, etc, the whole room just stays silent, like if they were ignoring them :(
Oh that alternate ending sounded beautiful. Maybe it's a stretch, just randomly running into each other at, of all places, Angkor Wat. Maybe that's why Kar Wai cut it. Anyway, who'll say that entrusting an ancient tree with your secret is not beautiful... Deleted segments on a website? COME AGAIN?
These jornos keep going in circles with these questions about "no script", even repeating the exact same question. So many question could be asked, for example about working with a marvelous cinematographer.
lol he calls tony leungs character mr chow correctly but then calls maggie cheungs character mrs chow... its mrs chan!!! i made the same mixup like 20 times when i was writing a paper on it for a class lmfao
@@joejellyfish Sorry, there's no English sources I know of. Only old Hong Kong tabloids, gossip magazines years ago. It's like an open secret for local Hongkongers.
@@verongonnabeinACT Sad to mention Curd Jürgens and Orson Welles had no sequel. So full of future Hong Kong was, young Godzilla only 50 meters tall, watchin its cute Kowloon 1:1 model raylway layout from all possible angels, China all the way true to scale, just take a look: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XvJWqowJ4LQ.html
days of being wild was the best and speak on real emotion/topics. others are so sloppy and it shows. overrated like other directors that are "known for their style", they just keep repeating their 'style'. hard to tell also because the subtitles in the films are also bad. so english speaking viewers reading the subtitles get a romantic view of the films, but that is not present in the original language nor in the acting itself. seems to me people are just wowed by the colors and the foreignness of it, aka the "wong kar wai style". it makes sense this whole film is just an iteration on that short japanese story they said he was inspired by. not much meat in in the mood for love or 2046. but sure it looks colorful and one of them has a good soundtrack. basically what i heard in the commentary of chungking express. ever since the success of that film, wkw just wanted to emulate it over and over again apparently. but that film, while great for being whimsical among other things, was successful through the soundtrack and faye wong. so these two other films of the trilogy are just repeats of that, without the magic of faye wong found in chungking express. she was in 2046 but had a lesser role and much less charm. and while maggie cheung and tony leung are handsome and beautiful actors, they are not the best acting wise. maggie cheung is like jennifer connelly, they are stars off looks, with very poor acting chops. tony has a great face, but much similar. he's just the poster boy for wkw. like other directors that have their favorite actors that they always include because they give off a vibe off their look. i actually find leslie cheung from days of being wild much more of a natural talent. he was awesome.. but if you read the english subtitles, the emotions do not come through, while every other line was also slightly wrong. in the mood for love and 2046 subtitles make it sound more 'sophisticated' than it actually was, while the original dialogue was very dry.
It seems like this interview was Maggie’s interview. Leung seems like he couldn’t be bothered to answer. I have seen him in other interviews and he is quite eloquent but here don’t know, but is like he did not really wanted to be there.
Tony was in a private school, but quit it at age of 15. His single mother couldn't afford it while raising 2 kids. He even skipped grades in school but couldn't continue studying due to financial difficulty. His coworkers in 80s said he always carried books on set. When other people went to have a drink after shooting, he would sit at a corner and read books.
@@forestforyou Ah that's very enlightening! Thanks for sharing. I'm really surprised by his command of English. I've been watching his movies all my life but didn't know he could speak so well in another language. 💖 And I'm glad someone actually read my comment! 💞
English is not a mandatory class in China. Besides, today Chinese actors from China, like Fan Bing Bing, most of them came from small villages so they don’t speak English at all. They do so well in Mandarin speaking movies or tv shows, it gives them no motivation to learn English.
ITMFL is one of my favourite movies. Love love love Maggie Cheung and WKW. What a cringeworthy interview and what a joke of an interviewer. Maggie Cheung’s character is not Mrs. Chao!!!! Did he even watch the movie?!?!?!? And he works for TIFF no less?!?!?! Way to ruin T.O’s and TIFF’s reputation. Shame
