To Be Over is my favourite Yessong. I think it's criminally underappreciated and a perfect, mellow yet no less epic end to the awesome chaos that precedes it on Relayer. Stunningly gorgeous melodies and wonderful instrumental work from the band. "After all, your soul will still surrender. After all, don't doubt your part - be ready to be loved."

It's not one of my favs form Yes, but it is the perfect closing track to Relayer, I agree!

The first time I ever heard ELP's Tarkus was on their "Welcome Back..." live album, and it instantly became my favorite part of the record. Years later I finally heard the original studio version and was hugely disappointed. The live version is so much more powerful and exciting, plus they brilliantly incorporated a section of Epitaph into it! Ever since, it just has to be that live rendition for me.

Something magical was definitely floating around in the air during this particular recording; between the topic, the picks, the interesting dialogue, the one-liners...this was a *fantastic* episode!!! As good as they generally are, this was my favorite one in a while from this series. Magma's Köhntarkösz, Todd Rundgren's Todd (and Utopia's debut), King Crimson's Red, Yes' Relayer... those would be just a few of my picks. Tons more, but I'll leave those alone, for now. Chuck busting out the Funkadelic? Sweet!!! Luis - That shirt!!! I see you. (And Yes' Tales from Somniferous Oceans??? LOL!!!) Special mention to Steven - your No. 2 is my favorite album of all-time (and your comment about Under Pressure had me DYING!!!, lol) This episode was straight fiyah! 🔥 🔥 🔥

I was fortunate to see Yes and Gentle Giant at the Cow Palace in 1976 and Genesis perform the entire Lamb in Jan.1975! Most o' my picks from 1974 were mentioned so I'll add some other gems: 10cc-Sheet Music; Focus-Hamburger Concerto; Kraftwerk-Autobahn; Manfred Mann's Earth Band-The Good Earth; Triumverat-Illusions On A Double Dimple; Robert Wyatt-Rock Bottom; Kayak II; Kevin Ayers-Confessions Of Dr. Dream And Other Stories; Queen-Sheer Heart Attack; Stevie Wonder-Fulfillingness' First Finale. It's almost a year later but I have revisited this and I owe you guys another thank you. "What is so great about Gentle Giant's Power and the Glory? I don't remember it being so good." But you guys keep bringing it up, so I listened again and it's much better than I remembered. In fact one of my favorite GG songs is on there: Playing the Game. Now I am, for the first time in years, listening again to the entire discography, and it is like rediscovering this band. Enjoying it, thanks again. (Still hard to beat Three Friends though!)

A whole lot of great albums were covered in this one . I was very glad to see Jethro Tull's Warchild , and the Strawbs' Hero & Heroine mentioned , as they are great albums as well . I tend to agree with Luis that The Lamb would have been a stronger album with the omission , or editing , of some of the songs . Tales from Topographic Oceans , to me , has maybe 7 or 8 shorter good songs buried in those longer pieces . Those shorter songs would make a great single album . Anyway , I"m from the less is more school of thought ( in most cases ) . An excellent video , thanks !!

Great episode. "In The Prog Seat" has become one of my most anticipated days of the week on Sea of Tranquility. And this video proves that the anticipation was warranted. I was happy to hear Luis Nasser share his opinion about "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway." It has been my opinion that LAMB would have been a better single album with more editing. In the same vein, I think THE WALL would have been a better single disc - and TALE FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS from YES would have been a stone-cold classic if it was a single disc. I am now retreating to my bunker for protection from the arrows and abuse from some of you.

Steve Hackett played a brilliant version of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway on Seconds Out show at the London Palladium on Monday evening. Still a phenomenal guitarist and great show - forgotten how heavy 70s Genesis music could be played live. Played all of the Musical Box, too many highlights to mention. How sad they couldn’t all have came together in 2000’s (including Peter) and toured Lamb. Thank goodness for Steve - and he is very loved by his audience, quite rightly.

Herbie Hancock's 'Thrust' album featuring the great Mike Clark on drums is classic. The funk drumming on this album is so tight and grooves so hard, that it prompted the one and only Tony Williams to cop a lesson from Mike prior to making Stanley Clark's debut album. Mike also does some heavy lifting on Brand X's 'Product' album - Thanks for mentioning this album Chuck.

Speaking as a 52-year-old middle class English guy, I think the background of Gabriel, Banks and Rutherford would have had an awful lot to do with the internal dynamics in the band. All three demonstrate these rather buttoned-up, reserved and - dare one say it - repressed upper middle class character traits that were typical of young men from their background at that time. They were trying to break through the emotional constraints inherent in attending a school like Charterhouse but those things run deep. When it came to personalities in a band, theirs perhaps contributed to serious tensions that wouldn't have been resolved satisfactorily because they kept a lot of stuff buried. Excuse the amateur psychology but I bet that had something to do with it.

Very cool to have my fellow countryman, Pekka Pohjola, featured on the show! I have his album called Keesojen Lehto ( think it's from 1977 ) and that one is great. I also have his 1972 album, Pihkasilmä Kaarnakorva, which is a bit more obscure musically, certainly not as immediate. Need to listen to Harakka Bialoipokku ( and btw, that last word is not Finnish, don't know where it came from...! ) Somehow it eluded me all these years. My top five is pretty standard stuff: 5. Camel - Mirage 4. King Crimson - Red 3. Yes - Relayer 2. Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom ( the cantebury scene is strong with this one, a marvellous album that can make me very emotional ) 1. Genesis - The Almighty Lamb ( nobody ever mentions the song Anyway, which is one of my favourites on it )

As Pete said, what a year - I drew up a very long list of albums, many of which were mentioned on the show as well as in the comments below - some that I didnt notice (apologies if they were) - Prog: Caravan & the New Symfonia/ Egg - The Civil Service/ Gryphon - From Red Queen to Gryphon 3/ Harmonium/ Horslips- Dancehall Sweethearts/ Ibis - Sun Supreme/ Le Orme- Contrappunti/ Supersister- Spiral Staircase Sass/ Trace- Trace Fusion/Jazz Rock : Charlie Mariano - Reflections/ Nucleus - Under the Sun/ Stanley Clarke Stanley Clarke/ Tempest - Living in Fear/ Zzebra- Zzebra. And for those wondering what ABBA's gutarist Janne Schaffer got up to in his spare time in 1974 checkout his solo album Andra or the album Ablution that he did with the guys from Quatermass - Peter Robinson on Keys, John Gustafson on Bass , Barry De Souza on drums (though he wasnt on the Quatermass album, that was Mick Underwood, however he was in the band that then backed Shawn Phillips after he had played with Rick Wakeman on Catherine Howard off 6 wives)) and a couple of others.

I did see the "Music Box" "Lamb" tour. Man that was impressive! Genesis did not just give them the slide projection and other effects. They had access to the master tapes of the album to pick out the individual parts! Funny - the PA was not the greatest, but then we thought maybe that's how they would have sounded in '74.

This video has one of my favorite Luis Nasser quotes. "For me, It's 'Progressive Rock,' it has to ROCK. It can't just float in a valley of unicorns and fairies, it has to have some fvvking balls, otherwise I'm not interested." (And I agree, especially about the album that he was referring to!)

The Waiting Room on that Liverpool bootleg is one of the greatest things I've ever heard. I wish Genesis leaned into that demented psych jam side of them more often.

Steven's comments on Gentle Giant were really thoughtful and on point. To another point on his suggestion I watched a few live clips of Tony Ashton and Jon Lord and it credits Bernie Madsen (of Whitesnake) on guitar. He's a dead ringer for Rory Gallagher but it's not actually him.

I've seen most of S o T 's "In the Prog Seat" videos now and I'm almost bewildered that the French band Ange gets very little mention. Their brilliant Au-dela du Delire (1974) album is relegated almost like an afterthought in the "honorable mentions", (and as Chuck says here, it's their best album). For explorers of Progressive rock, I recommend looking into that band. I can't recommend anything beyond 1976, but those first several years were amazing.

Genesis' Lamb Lies Down on Broadway: interesting discussions here. I may have mentioned it before but for ANY fan I recommend the Genesis Reissues Interviews which you can find right here on RU-vid. They are detailed stories of the making of all of their albums, told by the men who made them. Listening to all of those, I did get the impression that, from the very beginning, there was a very intense and high powered WRITING core of that band in Banks and Rutherford. I think they all thought of Gabriel as essential until they lost him, but we all puzzle, as is discussed here, about the apparent neglect of guitarist Steve Hackett. Listening to all those interviews, I wonder if a big part of the answer to it is: How many creative titans can get a big chunk of air time in ONE BAND? Maybe the creative process between Banks and Rutherford was so intense they couldn't fit Hackett in? And then later, they get down to three people and only THEN do they find some room to let Phil Collins contribute songs to the repetoire (Duke album). I'm not saying it's right, because Hackett felt pretty snubbed, but it's a thought. I have been in bands where I worked with a guitarist who was on a ROLL writing music for song after song, my job as singer was lyrics and melodies, and between the two of us there WAS a very intense writing core that had no lack of material or ideas. We had no NEED of other band members material..... did Banks and Rutherford feel that way? I wonder. ....
