The ending sex scene is even more powerful when you consider they use the iron balls as sex toys. What was once used for punishment and inflicting pain is now being used for pleasure and expressing love.

I noticed that too - and I also noticed that Uncle Kouzuki used three brass(?) balls, an unbalanced number; but at the end the women use four silver balls, a balanced number. The moon (traditionally a female symbol) is also silver, and if you watch through the credits, you can see the moon on the painted door go from full to dark and back to full again.

This destroys any negative criticism about the erotic sexual direction in this film. Hearing some people just put this film down simply because they got a porno is utterally narrow minded and disingenuous for a movie made for a mature audience. Its not screaming lesbian sex in your face, toxic porno desired by meat heads, and over exploitation because the whole point of the movie was to portray those exploitations and served as having a purpose into why the direction was this way. If you can't understand film and why a good director like Park Chan Wook and so many other great directors envision the opportunity to show a films full unapologetic potential regardless of the obscenities... you should NOT be watching movies!

Thank you for the insightful interview. With the director showing some of his thought process, I appreciated the movie much more now.

When other ppl said there is not necessarily to have the sex scene at the end, I would say this is the best way to end up by this. This is how Hideko finds her way to enjoy sex voluntarily. Clever.

The bells we see at the end are the same bells that Uncle's character used to torture Hideko and forced her to read p*rnographic text for some higher class gentleman They were all gentlemen from outside but dirty people from inside. and in last hideko uses the same bells to pleasure her and sooki And that work happens as per the wish of both. For me it's a very powerful scene It would be a crime to call it soft po*n It's a masterpiece it feels like a dream We wait for the story to end but it goes on and on like a river(in a good way)and it's so sweet We can never tell when or how the story is going to end And the music and cinematography were mind-blowing There are a lot of s*x scenes in it, but each scene has some significance.(a little too much for me) May be little confusing at first watch Overall 9.5/10 And the performances of both the lead actresses were great.

Great questions. I loved where it took director Park. Translating was very nice too. Kept it very natural and not so word-for word which can make it seem much more foreign.

I love this movie, first I saw it in the tv few times but I change Channel because I thought I dont like it then the other day I got sick so I need to stay at home I searched for recommend movie so I saw this sat and watch omg there more about this movie because its true that some Japanese painting are wierd and in that era so much violence specially back in history. It caught my attention Hideko poor girl. The sex scene was not just sex scene it was really a love scene, you dont have to be a lesbian to love the film.

Great movie. The ending sex scene still feels kinda unnecessary, but I understand the significance of it

That's "..and they f*cked happily ever after..." instead of "...and they live happily ever after...'

I thought it was a bit unnecessary too, but Park explained it well. And may I add a small detail: During the first kiss scene, Sook-Hee said that her friend, Kutan, taught her how to kiss, albeit by mere words, not actions. And during the extensive version of the first love scene, Sook-Hee said that Hideko was a "natural." Pretty sure that's because of all the years of reading those awful books Hideko endured. She learned by merely *reading.* Those books begat and fueled her own desires. From my POV, after she broke free from her miserable life, Hideko's got tons of time and opportunity to release *everything* she'd been forced to hide for so long, and that includes her desires. Sook-Hee didn't have it any easier (she grew up orphaned and poor), so both women unintentionally unlocked a hidden trove of desires they had found in each other; their (rather long and *aggressive* ) love scenes were proof and the result of what they'd suppressed. So back to my point, after years of being abused, and sheltered - even carnally so - Hideko finally was able to achieve her freedom on every level after she met Sook-Hee; therefore acted out her deepest fantasies she had got via reading. In the end, both Hideko and Sook-Hee were both able to *jingle all the way.*
