I am a teacher and I get absolutely exhausted by being told that everytime something goes wrong with families, that schools can somehow make up for a lack of parenting. GROW-UP PARENTS!!! Yes, I definitely agree that some finances should be taught in schools. However parents should be teaching finances from the earliest point of when a child can understand that money is made from hard work and not from just asking for it, like it somehow drops out of the air. An 8 yr old child with an allowance of $8 a week, needs to be shown how to put aside a specific amt for savings, and then begins to learn the difference between WANTS and NEEDS and what that means for their future. There is such a thing parental responsibility. I then would be very glad as a teacher in the educational system to help SUPPORT your efforts. I do this for my three children, so why can't you do that for yours???? Just saying.....
@Liimpy

What are you ranting about, idk how long you been teaching but i went thru grade school in the late 80s early 90s.. they taught us basic economics in home-ec.. we also learned how to use a stove and cook.. we learned how to use table saws,drills etc in wood shop.. these classes barely exist in a few schools anymore..

@@Liimpy this part!! I was taught how to invest in a math class at school. Depending on the school you went to, you may have learned some basics. In high school they taught us how to write a check. When I worked at a college, one of my students had no idea what to do with any part of that check.
@jenniferwilliams6494
@jenniferwilliams6494 Год назад
It's about education. If the parents don't know, how will they teach their children. 🤔 This is why it's not hard to put even a small segment for budgeting or economics in a math class. Your ranting about something thats been done and is successful. A lot of people do not know basics. It's not an all out fix but it helps. I learned basics then my job offered financial counseling. I took it upon myself to go and I learned how to budget from there. In turn I teach people around me. Kids and grown people.

When I was very young, I got an allowance of a quarter every week. If I held onto the quarters two weeks in a row (instead of spending or putting in my piggy bank/saving), I could trade that 50 cents in for a dollar instead of getting another quarter. It was a cool introduction to investing that I wish my folks had expanded on or helped me get a jump on with a Roth or something.
@deborahblackvideoediting8697
I completely agree. Parents need to step-up and teach their children about finances. Of course some parents are clueless and need to educated themselves. I wish so much that I'd been taught more about finances when I was growing up. Anyhow, when I was pregnant, I found out about a fantastic book called 'Money Doesn't Grow On Trees'. And I followed the advice with my son who is now almost 15, and has a very healthy bank account for someone his age. We've planned with him about how he can attend University without the weight of a massive student debt hanging over him after he graduates. He and his friend are always coming up with money-making ideas, and every time they earn money, my son puts it in his bank account. I've very proud of him and the way he thinks about the future when making decisions about spending money.

I’ve never had a garage sale, and never will. I don’t relish the idea of arguing with strangers as to whether my item is worth the $5 price tag, or would I just consider giving it to them for a quarter. I give to charity thrift stores or Value Village. And I believe that is exactly how this couple felt. And in this time of Craigslist I run curb alerts. I put the stuff on the boulevard and am always happy when it is gone at the end of the day.

A great show - it demonstrates that no matter how much you make, everyone can fall into the debt trap and once there, it's difficult to get out without a realistic look at the picture and the discipline to live life differently. The "I work hard; I deserve it; I like nice things" can keep someone a pauper forever - and the long-term consequences later in life are drastic. I know exposing themselves like this was very difficult for this couple, but being willing to do so will help a lot of people.

The reality is not only do they have the debt, but they have absolutely zero financial education. They take not a single course in Personal and Business Finance so when they’re finally ready to practice they don’t know what they’re doing. It’s insane. And because of their naivety, anyone can tell them this or that fad (or just plain awful “plan”) financial plan or strategy is the way to go-and it’s not. I’ve received better financial advice *and they would too* from my local credit union and saved big bucks on fees associated with commercial banks-and these people are clueless most of the time that there’s any difference between a credit union vs. a commercial bank. They also don’t require the billing they outsource to compete for their business, the firms they use to file taxes quarterly for their taxes, office cleaning services, supplies etc.to compete either. These are just daily overhead vs. income realities they don’t know a thing about. Some of them didn’t even know to escrow their taxes on their real estate, thinking the mortgage payment covered that and instead get hit with these tax bills they’re unprepared for. Sigh. It’s a mess of ignorance-simply not knowing and hubris-and we all get hung on that petard at some time or another. A practitioner like this one who isn’t a Specialist doesn’t make big bucks. Family Practitioners and Internists are desperately needed but Specialties are where the money is-we all do what’s in our best economic interests and that pot a gold promised at the end of Specialization training looks damn good.

I think it's extremely lazy not to have a garage sale when the money made could be used to pay off some debt! Even if it was only a few hundred dollars.

You can see it in her face and hear it in her voice: embarrassment. That was the reason. Also, I think they didn't want the neighbours get any of their stuff for a fraction of the original price. I see it in my country as well. People would rather throw stuff away or donate them to a thrift store than give or sell them to friends, co-workers, family and neighbours. Enviousness, selfishness, egotism.

It just meant they were not really greedy when it came to money hence they decided to donate and gave away their surplus stuff. My auntie who was always doing well financially opted for a garage sale thinking her stuff had value where in reality they were not. It just showed her greediness when it came to money instead of giving away free stuff to family and friends or donating them still thought about financial gains in return

I usually agree with everything Gail tells people, except NEVER ever "consolidate" your consumer debt into your mortgage!!!. That is insane. All you've done is added a ton more interest to that debt. Instead, STOP buying stuff you don't absolutely need. Do a budget, stick to it and pay off the debt asap. Dave Ramsey has the right idea!

"Scrapbooking" is a very specific "trendy" hobby that you virtually cant turn into a money making business. And a specialty store overlaps with offerings of more well known stores, like Michael's crafts. Quilting / sewing is a more popular hobby but has much more tangible results, an artform spread out for many to see and buy, not just a book on a shelf. Also, many women in recent years were sucked into opening "meal assembly prep" stores (started by "Dream Dinners" franchise), until they all closed down due to the high operating cost of any food services business and the lack of customers that even understand what the concept is all about.

This was recorded in 2005. These days the average salary for a family physician in Ontario, where this was filmed, is now about $250K. I think a young doctor probably starts a bit lower, from what I've read online, but an experienced family doctor can be making well into the $300,000 range.
