+Riothamus Rex The same here :) Bought it 20 years ago and the digipack is still in excellent condition. This album is a sheer diamond, a pearl in every collection. I am more into electronics and industrial (Anenzephalia, Controlled Bleeding, Deutsch Nepal, Reutoff, Troum/Maeror Tri, Biosphere, Fennesz, Tim Hecker, Mokira, Loscil, Field Rotation and so on), but I always had a darker metal-side in me and I always looked out for "undiscovered land" ( I find it in early Anathema, My Dying Bride or early Katatonia, Decoryah, Limbonic Art etc....phew, time goes by). Heart of the ages is a milestone, a glimmering piece of art. One of my alltime-favourites, maybe one of the top 10 albums ever created.

One of the most emotional albums ever. I still remember my self getting this CD as a gift included inside a Heavy Metal magazine. It was my introduction to Atmospheric Black Metal that time. Back in 1998. Still have it and stare it!....

Wondering what makes you think that. It was not that big of a scene at the time, and Ulver is one of the biggest names to this day in Black Metal. I sincerely doubt that was due to their change in sound, as people often complain about it. Although it is not Black Metal, their Folk/Acoustic album basically sparked a new genre. Ildjarn is considered a major inspiration to a lot of others as well, personally not my thing, but I've known super cult folks all about them. Even Green Carnation, which was also half In The Woods... at the time, were really well known, various bands have talked about them in old videos.

EyesofNeurosis I kind of beg to differ. Though, it may be true for some, I do think Ulver had more exposure, thus more inspirational. Also the kind of did a good job of merging more traditional BM sound with their more national romantic ideas!

What I wonder is the response when those albums were released in Norway. History, of course, tells a different story, as ItW's are clearly underrated and hardly talked about today, which is sad.

EyesofNeurosis I do think the scene was starting to get bigger and bigger and thus, at least the HEart of the Ages album, kind of drowned a bit due to a lot of releases, even though it was released on Misanthropy Records. Ulver allready had quite much more exposure due to being from Oslo, getting the 7" out, getting released on the HNF as well as being featured on "the svarte alvor" whhich was a documentary on national tv! Ulver also had been much more active in the so called underground scene so i do believe their album was way more anticipated. If my memory doesnt fail me completely I think it was very well recieved.

It's the lenght of each song! HEart of the Ages for example takes 8:22 minutes!
