In Their Own Words : ANZACs of the Western Front

This presentation of WW1 film, together with voices of WW1 veterans, was produced by the Australian War Memorial's film and sound curators. The footage and original oral history recordings are part of the rich film and sound collections of the Australian War Memorial.
The Memorial holds many oral history stories of the Great War; these are stories of veterans who survived to record their stories of the war years leading up to Armistice and beyond. These stories are a fascinating insight into the minds of a previous generation, revealing not only how campaigns were fought, but also the realities of war at an individual level, deeply personalising the Australian history of war with humour and with tears.
Some recordings were conducted by Memorial staff, while a few are memoirs, recorded by the veterans themselves.
Most of Australia's WW1 Western Front footage was shot by official photographers, such as Sir Hubert Wilkins, Herbert Baldwin and Captain Frank Hurley. It was their role to capture an authentic record of Australians in WW1. However, it was virtually impossible for a cameraman of the early 20th Century to take his camera, (large and unwieldy by today's standards), into the active front line. Some footage -- men leaping from a trench and across the wire, for example - had to be staged by arrangement of the cameraman. Nevertheless, it is to these talented and courageous cameramen we owe this captivating glimpse of Australians long gone, and the conditions under which they lived and fought.

How wonderful to hear those truly, richly Australian voices, telling it as only they could ever know how it was. Such precious footage. May we live our lives worthy of their sacrifice. LEST WE FORGET.

I came from the dream-time From the dusty red-soil plains I am the ancient heart The keeper of the flame I stood upon the rocky shores I watched the tall ships come For forty thousand years I've been The first Australian I came upon the prison ship Bowed down by iron chains I fought the land, endured the lash And waited for the rains I'm a settler, I'm a farmer's wife On a dry and barren run A convict, then a free man I became Australian I'm the daughter of a digger Who sought the mother lode The girl became a woman On the long and dusty road I'm a child of the Depression I saw the good times come I'm a bushie, I'm a battler I am Australian We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We'll share a dream and sing with one voice "I am, you are, we are Australian" I'm a teller of stories I'm a singer of songs I am Albert Namatjira And I paint the ghostly gums I'm Clancy on his horse I'm Ned Kelly on the run I'm the one who waltzed Matilda I am Australian I'm the hot wind from the desert I'm the black soil of the plains I'm the mountains and the valleys I'm the drought and flooding rains I am the rock, I am the sky The rivers when they run The spirit of this great land I am Australian We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We'll share a dream and sing with one voice "I am, you are, we are Australian" We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We'll share a dream and sing with one voice "I am, you are, we are Australian" "I am, you are, we are Australian" Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Bruce Woodley / Dobe Newton I Am Australian lyrics © BMG Rights Management People also ask Why was the song I am Australian written? The Digger In The Wire. By W. Kerr. From the story of Blind Advocate Bowan from Wagga Wagga, as told by Bill Kerr.C.2013. Someone's shot my eyes away, now I'm blind and I can't see but I can hear my cobbers calling, and they'll be coming back for me so I'll hurry up and wait a while, that's a soldier's lot I know they'll come and get me when the sniping's not too hot. Just what we were doing out here I'm buggered if I know they talked about our duty and striking some sort of blow push on lads, push on, you know how officers get he said he'd go and get some help, but he hasn't come back yet. So I think I'll prop up here for a while and roll myself a smoke I've tried and tried, but my eyes got shot, by that German bloke I s'pose I can't really blame him, he's just doing his job and the same's been done to lots of them, by the fellas in my mob. No, there's nothing else to do but prop up here and wait it must be getting dark, it's cold, and I don't feel so great. I wish I was back home again, not out here between the wire listening to the wireless with Mum, and Dad stoking the fire. I wish I could hear her voice again, nagging "don't be late" and I should have done that job for her, and fixed that ruddy gate. It fell off it's hinges, out front, on Jackson street with verandas, gardens, picket fences, all kept nice and neat. But someone shot my eyes away, now I'm stuck here in No Man's Land and I think they got me somewhere else by the blood running down my hand. Funny how it doesn't hurt, I must have lost a lot of blood and I can't find my knapsack, I must have lost it in the mud it's got some photos in it, of my family and friends and there's a nice one of me and Olive, on the beach, where the Murrumbigee bends. Yep, I can hear them calling out to me, but I can't make replies cos that would give the game away to that bloke who shot my eyes and if they can not find me, and this is where I die I'll be with my dog and tucker box, on the road to Gundagi. And if they ask when duty called, I'll salute and will reply did I stay home in safety? "No fear, no, not I." Yes the pals of my childhood are laughing as they play and I can hear them calling me, to where the Blue Gums sway to the river that we swam in, when........ when I was a kid I wonder if I'll make it back there........But I don't think that I did.

Wonderful film footage and legendary ANZACs' memoirs, thank you for sharing with us. One question I have is at about 7.05 of the footage showing stretcher bearers bringing in the injured, there appears to be a group of Turkish soldiers assisting, presumably pows...am I correct ?

I would like to point out that a large majority of this footage is actually of what would come to be known as the Royal Newfoundland Regiment (at the time NOT a part of Canada, but still a British colony) at Beaumont-Hamel during the opening days of The Battle of the Somme. Not to take away from the Australians and their valiant efforts, but I believe the unbelievable loyalty and bravery of the Newfoundlanders to continue to go over the top in the face of insurmountable odds...simply extraordinary. I just don't want 'stock WW1 footage' passed around interchangeably.
