In This Town, They Burn People For Being Witches (#70)

If you ask a Kenyan what they first think of when they think of Kisii, chances are they'll say witchcraft. I'd normally dismiss these as tribal stereotypes...but then I started to read about the murders of elderly women in the region, and something didn't seem right. It was time to go investigate, and I was hoping that all I would find was a village of friendly people and nothing more.

So Tommy goes to a town, visits an upstairs restaurant where he's told by one of the patrons that he is an African, and the waitress at the restaurant gives him a tour at a quarry. African hospitality is special.

Need to give context to "witches" stories in Kisii. Kisii is the most populated area in Kenya p/sqm, and as a result land is very scarce. As a result, many Kisii emigrate and build homes away from their villages, unlike most Kenyans who have both a city and rural home. The US Marines is full of Kisii villagers, who settle mostly in Dallas and Atlanta, which is mostly because of scarcity of land, and not easy to live in areas where other communities live. Land disputes are very common due to population pressure, and people will use any means to get land, including accusing old women of witchcraft so that they can disinherit rival families of land.
@lando4901
@lando4901 2 года назад
Accusing old women of witchcraft was also based on property disputes in medieval europe too.

I like the ‘irony’ displayed in going to school and speaking fluent English. It reminded me of Ngugi wa Thiogo and Fanon. Ngugi holds that ‘language is one of the Europeans pathologies and tools of dominance in the African context.’ Then Fanon presents an ‘egotistical assumption of the Africans with a mastery of European language. Such that an African who can speak English well is deemed learned or civilized.’ Learning and speaking any European language fluently is excellent, but that doesn’t qualify one’s education. The mzungu struggles to talk in the local language while the man was displaying his mastered language. Nevertheless, the content and hospitality are outstanding. Such hospitality can only be found in Africa, thanks to Ubuntu.

How else would you be considered learned in Kenya if you don't speak good English? It means you went to school and you learnt some new language in there, thus the product of going to school, but that doesn't guarantee intelligence, it's just one of the product acquired from school
@rang3688
@rang3688 3 года назад
@@lesudaalexis9913 about language, education, or intelligence, you are just mimicking my words. But you don’t see the irony. A language is a tool of communication, and it points to a culture. We see a mzungu willing to engage in a local language, but on contract individuals ready to parade their mastery of the Queen's language. That is the irony.

When people in Kenya stare at you its not like they hate they are just curious its just that there are no so many white guys in some parts of the country and most of them haven't been close to a white guy before so when they get that chance they take in as much details as possible by staring... It's not that they don't now white guys exit its just that they haven't been up close to them
