24/11/2020: English captions are now complete!
This video belonged to another user who eventually privated the video, however, i still love this musical and want others to get the chance to watch it and maybe fall in love with it like i did, so, enjoy.
This is the 1985 version, a revival and rewrite of the orignal 1979 one, eliminating songs such as your lips and me, my chance to survive the night, the nausea before the game and Marvin takes a victory shower. While adding i need sleep, helluva day, wedding song, three seconds, i swear i won't ever again (not included in this production), i feel him slipping away and packing up. It also edits some songs adding dialogues or new lyrics; My highschool sweetheart, the r*pe of miss goldberg, love me for what i am, Marvin's final words on how America got it's name.
In trousers is a prequel to falsettos. It's part one of the Marvin trilogy.
Order of the Marvin trilogy:
-In Trousers.
-March Of The Falsettos.
-Falsettoland.
Falsettos is the combination of march of the falsettos and falsettoland as two acts.

I love this play so much because we all recognize it’s themes (asking what a ‘man’ really is, coming to terms with homosexuality in the 60/70’s, sexism, repression, egotism) but none of us actually fully and completely understand the plot. I just think this shared love and confusion is fucking awesome.
@grimamies

YES! YOU ARE COMPLETELY RIGHT! Sometimes the themes are clear as day and sometimes it's up to interpretation, I love discussing certain plot points with others, because we all understand it in such different and unique ways!

Kind of obsessed with this. I think, despite some of the songs that are missing, it explains why Marvin is the way he is. He tried to love women, he even married a woman, just to try to live a 'normal life'. But he just couldn't. Miss Goldberg and Sweetheart wore the hats that covered their faces because they were women in Marvin's life that he tried to love. After Breakfast with Sugar, Wife AKA Trina gets a hat too. In Three Seconds Marvin is constantly saying that he's gonna die, just before he takes his vows, he gets "shot". In I Never Wanted to Love You from March of the Falsettos/Falsettos Act 1, Marvin says "It really killed me when you took those vows....I never wanted to love you". He didnt WANT any of this, no matter how hard to tried, not truly. Marvin constantly wants things and expects to get them, so when he doesnt get his tight knit family he looses his shit. The whole Marvin Trilogy is about Marvin learning how to love and be loved and unlearning all the toxic shit he grew up with. God this musical is great. Not to mention this cast is WONDERFUL

“The thing about explorers is: they discover things that are already there.” This musical kills me, every time.
@JesusMartinez-iq3to
@JesusMartinez-iq3to Год назад
Upon watching this for two years I’m now thinking that “the rape of miss goldberg” is about marvin feeling insecure (as we see in highschool ladies at five o’clock there are rumors about marvin screwing his friends which could possibly have been made up or bot because he joined the play, something that is seemed as a femenine or “gay” thing to do) and deciding to lie and say that he actually had sex with miss goldberg to disprove the rumors (thats why the whole marvin beating some guy in a fight “actually I drugged him, but not with pills, but an apple” thing makes no sense, he’s making it up on the spot) that ending up in miss Goldberg getting fired, as we hear the actual ms goldberg defending herself “I was never out of place, I taught and minded my business”, which is why she is in the story at all, the musical according to will finn (the writer) is in it’s core about misogyny. Marvin regresses unto his former self in moments of his life where he wronged a woman. He never payed attention to his sweatheart, choosing to fictionally choose ms goldberg and hurting both of them in the process, them when he got married to Trina knowing he would hurt her and finally when trina found out he was cheating on her with a man and breaking down. I cant believe after almost three years of listening to this musical it is now at this moment that I have come to understand so much of this plot (or maybe it is not at all about this and i just completely lost my mind) but either way I am having the time of my life right now rewatching it with a completely new perspective!!!

absolutely. not to mention with what little we hear of marvin’s mother says she’s cold and withholding- similar to how ms. goldberg treats him. not to mention how her lack of interest in him means she is likely safe- in that she’ll never return his affection like trina or sweetheart do.

This is the only performance of in Trousers that is complete here in youtube, i tried looking up the actors and it looks like Allen Katz (Marvin) has a distillery in NY and Alet Oury Taylor (his sweetheart) is a dance fitness teacher and performer. I couldn’t find any info on Liz Lombardi or Lisa Gurevich and don’t know who plays who (Ms. goldberg and Marvin’s Wife/trina). I think it’s funny how these people just performed this musical for college 30 years ago and might not even know that there’s a whole new generation of theater people watching it because it’s the only performance of In Trousers available to them.

I really wish the published version kept the cut songs 😭. They were some of my favorites. It would be a dream if the original ‘79 version was published as well But the ending hits different tho Edit: I kind of miss the crypticness of the original. This version is much easier to understand, but it’s fun trying to read the subtext. I’ve been thinking about this musical a lot lately, and I’ve noticed that in this version (1985) they have the song “I feel him slipping away” which seems to replace “your lips and me” from the 1979 version, because they seem to be saying similar things. “I feel him slipping away” is so much more direct with what it’s talking about, it spells it out for you, Trina knows that Marvin is cheating on her but believes them to be a woman. What I love about your lips and me is that it’s subtle, you get the feeling that Trina knows Marvin is unfaithful, but it also subtly mentions other things about Trina (this is a bit more my interpretation) she mentions the judgmental neighbours, and talks about how boring her life as a suburban house-wife is. It just feels like a much more intimate look at Trina as character rather than just her feelings towards Marvin. Overall the songs added into the 1985 version seem to be much more in-your-face than the 1979 songs, “I have a Family” is another one that is very straight-forward.
@grimamies

Its about marvin trying to prove to himself he aint gay by getting into relationships with these women but then whizzer comes along and marvin accepts his sexuality. The songs represent the relationship marvin had with these women
@heath6802
@heath6802 Год назад
So it’s a frame story: Up until ‘How Marvin Eats His Breakfast’ is the night he spent in Trina and his home after she found out he cheated on her with Whizzer. HMEHB up until “Breaking Down” is him laying in bed reminiscing over how his life up until that moment. Him being 14, denying he was fantasizing of men, his high school sweetheart who wanted to get physical and he refused viewing her as a friend at best. He convinced himself that he just didn’t like young women, and that Miss Goldberg was clearly the perfect woman, and he tried his best to fantasize about her putting her on an unreachable pedestal. “Marvin always gets the things he wants” “except the things he wants...” Could be a clever word play, because Miss Goldberg can clearly tell Marvin’s a gay theatre kid and is actually pleading he should “accept the things he wants” Then he gets older, meets Trina, they hit it off, we know from Falsettos that their marriage was rushed on account of Trina unexpectedly pregnant with Jason. We see this wedding. Trina is happy she gets to be his wife, Marvin views this as a funeral instead of a wedding. His future sealed. Trina suspects something’s going on. Marvin’s distant. He probably found a woman he loves more and is cheating on her! Who is this woman?! It’s Whizzer Brown and he went down Trina found out! Marvin spent one final night in their home, packed his things, had breakfast over sugar with Trina, left her a letter coming clean about his side of their marriage. He’s happy with Whizzer but it’s a big adjustment of his lifestyle. Trina tries to adjust to sleeping alone after a decade. High school sweetheart was always a bridesmaid never a bride, drinking away her sorrow as an adult, Miss Goldberg also seems to be without a lover herself. Marvin finally got his fantasy come true of everything happening in trousers only, no skirts. The Columbus stuff was an allegory of Marvin’s marriage, putting him in that role of the school play was to center him in that metaphor “Marvin’s Giddy Seizures” are absolutely an illusion for arousal. He was unable to have a giddy seizure like ‘the old days’ until right after he slept with Whizzer. A symbol for passion, a symbol of Marvin’s sexuality. He was definitely postering it as a teenager even if he didn’t actually feel attracted to that girl. She did seem to know, “is it something he made up or is it medicinal?” It’s not genuine and she knew it. But after Whizzer? His laughter and joy was genuine, it’s the brief time in the show he’s happy: Whizzer Going Down and Marvin’s Giddy Seizures (reprise)

@Grilledcheesecake
@Grilledcheesecake Месяц назад
No- no you got it wrong.. Miss Goldberg is just a teacher,it's just Marvin's confusion about his sexuality here's a post from Tumblr that explains it So no, I do not believe there was a physical rape, as it wouldn’t really make sense story-wise (it makes your main character completely unsympathetic, which doesn’t seem to have been the prerogative of William Finn) and it just doesn’t suit the overall building of tone. Note: High School Ladies at Five o’Clock is described as a “calypso fantasy” - which would make sense of their song pairing (as you see in the cast recording of the 1979 version, a single song is entitled “High School Ladies at Five o’Clock / The Rape of Miss Goldberg by Marvin” as in they paired these two short songs together). Both songs do not truly take place in the narrative but rather in teenage Marvin’s mind. Through these dreams, I believe teenage Marvin is trying to figure out just what he wants (does he want to “rape”/sleep with a woman like Miss Goldberg? Or does he want to “screw his friends” - in other words, men?). So, this means that no, Marvin did not rape Miss Goldberg (at least not in the physical, literal sense of the word). However, it does poise a question of to how he affected her (because he did affect her in the narrative, as evident throughout the musical), and if a “rape” (a metaphorical one, of course) really did occur. Throughout the rape scene (It should be noted that it is cut into “scenes,” just like Marvin at the Psychiatrist. I believe this means that - like the Three-Part Mini-Opera - these scenes take place several days apart at least), Marvin is more transfixed by her glasses rather her breasts or genitals. Actually, he makes no real utterance of an attraction to her physically (he just says that he thinks she’s “cool”). moreracquetball Anonyme a demandé : Whats your interpretation of "The Rape of Miss Goldberg" from In Trousers? I know its probably not meant to be taken literally but how do you perceive it? Well, let’s look at the (1985 Version) In Trousers for the answer to whether it is “literal” or not: As you can read, the lines: a fantasy which is better abstracted. So no, I do not believe there was a physical rape, as it wouldn’t really make sense story-wise (it makes your main character completely unsympathetic, which doesn’t seem to have been the prerogative of William Finn) and it just doesn’t suit the overall building of tone. Of course, her glasses are one of the many metaphors and symbolism of In Trousers, of which that don’t have a concrete meaning. Her glasses could be sex, or confidence, or control, or fear. Really, it can be any and all of these things, and we’ll never really know for sure which is the intended metaphor (again, it’s all up for interpretation). However, we do know that whatever it is, Marvin wants them. Not just so Miss Goldberg could be stripped of them (and here’s what I think the rape really is - Marvin took something away from her, but it wasn’t physical or sexual. It was metaphorical, like control or confidence or fear), but so Marvin could possess it himself (after the “rape scene” Marvin is shown to be wearing Miss Goldberg’s glasses). This leads me to interpret the glasses as either self-confidence or control, both of which that teenage Marvin (undergoing a sexual awakening that scares and confuses him) would desperately want to possess. It’s clear throughout the play that Marvin admires Miss Goldberg (see: My High School Sweetheart), and he might - in his weird cocktail of sexual discovery and confusion - confuse that admiration and envy as sexual lust. And so, by “raping her” (again, in his dream, and again, not physically but of a metaphorical sense), Marvin “gets the things he wants.” Because he got to physically sleep with her, didn’t he? That should satisfy him, shouldn’t it? But then Miss Goldberg adds, “Except the things he wants” (so the entire line would be “Marvin always gets the things he wants - except the things he wants”). So, Marvin “got” Miss Goldberg (which is something that he “wanted”) but he didn’t truly get what he wanted (as in, to sleep with a man). Also let's.. Stop infantilizing Marvin?? The guy's a huge jerk for like, 2 musicals out of 3

@@shawnbay2211 Compared to Falsettos, In Trousers has little to no narrative structure and mostly shows moments in Marvin’s life in a vignette style. BUT IN TROUSERS, Marvin states “he lights another cigarette” in “Whizzer is Going Down”. I feel like this was a re-write and in the most recent complete version of the musicals he doesn’t smoke, still, just a detail I noticed upon watching every recording more than 10 times.
@Leikzq1
@Leikzq1 Год назад
True!! I have also seen a couple of theories abt this being either symbolism or Marvin’s recall of it rather than a literal thing. Marvin’s perspective isn’t completely accurate because of his “giddy seizures” making him an unreliable narrator (he says smth like nothings exactly like I say it is). The symbolism part is either just to emphasize that they’re sleeping together (cigarette after sex trope), or because cigarettes were typically associated with lesbians it’s to place Whizzer in a more feminine role in their relationship? Obv the musicals were written at different times but I still think they’re interesting ideas :)
