Periphery engineer/mixer Adam “Nolly” Getgood demonstrates one of the many stages of dynamic control you can apply to a vocal track in order to help sit at the forefront of a mix.
He uses Waves Vocal Rider in Logic Pro X.

NAIL THE MIX is an online mixing school created by Joey Sturgis, Joel Wanasek and Eyal Levi - the guys who produced bands like TDWP, Chelsea Grin, Blessthefall, Machine Head, Monuments, Miss May I, Of Mice & Men, Reflections, Born Of Osiris, Asking Alexandria and dozens more of this generation's best metal bands.
Every month, NAIL THE MIX members get exclusive access to the REAL MULTI-TRACK SESSIONS from a REAL ALBUM, and a 6-8 hour live streaming class from the producer who mixed it. These aren't bogus covers played by some nobody off of RU-vid, these are the actual sessions by bands like Gojira, Meshuggah, Chelsea Grin, Periphery, Papa Roach, Machine Head, A Day To Remember and State Champs - and NTM is the only place in the world you'll get access to them!

That's the hardest thing about getting into mixing, is people who do podcasts talking shit about newbies for not knowing any better... that's the way to run an educational program.

actually he said, you should learn your craft properly instead of trying taking shortcuts (cause in the end there are no actually shortcuts) to know how powerful plug-ins work and make a good use of these.

Anything Nolly does is top notch. Incredible mixer/musician. i really hope URM gets him back in the future. however its worth mentioning that none of this segment is possible if Spencer was a shit vocalist. i'd love a few clips of some URM guys mixing a horribly tracked and performed song. ( easier said then done because who wants to be the band with the SHIT track? lol ). guys at my level who are doing this for friends and/or for free are never going to get bands that can perform like this. nobody starts off tracking someone who can sing like Spencer or Ian Kenny from Karnivool. or have guitarists who have such a great tight picking hand like John Browne, lol. i totally mixed a song a month back where it sounded like the guitarists chugging/palm muting was performed by him smacking his 7th string with a drum stick, it was not as funny as it sounds haha. either way i still love the all the great content you guys produce. i ALWAYS learn something from the live mixing sessions and please keep it coming. thanks!!

4:38. Bearded guy talks shit about newbies. Nolly does not respond but gets on with the tutorial. Shows what a professional Nolly is. What a guy!

I don't know that he was necessarily talking shit. It seemed to me he was more recommending to make sure you're not just reading into one thing and committing to it right away without fully knowing about it.

That's interesting. The way I've been going about fixing Vocals doubles and whatnot to the mix was to use a limiter on the vocal bus and setting it up while listening to the chorus of the song. Once I would find the right threshold value I would adjust the fader of the add ons vocals so they won't outshine the main lead vocals. I now have kinda stopped doing that 'cause I'm not bothering programming in an harmony part on my covers. Thinking back at it tho' that's a noobish thing to do, not that I particularly give two fucks about it, just pointing out how weird it is to think back at how you used to do stuff back then. Like you get this weird feeling that's not really "growth" but more like you have changed entirely, like, you don't feel annoyed by some of your old ways or anything. Really, it's just a weird feeling. Now, am I going to spend 70 bucks for the vst that basically does 3 hours of fader automation for you? Eh, I think that's hard to say, but it's probably not in my top 10 things I need in my production life. That's more something you would do once you reach a certain pro level and want to save time but I don't think that's something us common mortals would wish for. On the other hand tho', I've recently been composing and producing for my own local band and I really wanted to do my very best job at it, so far I'm happy with the instrumentals' production. We have yet to record the vocals and this could come in handy. Ehhh, I dunno. Maybe it's gonna be a good Christmas gift I could give myself.

nothing wrong with vocal rider... anyone hating just doesn't know how to use it. and i don't mean they don't understand what each parameter controls I mean they don't know when the appropriate time to use it is and to what degree.

So did he actually use layers in the chorus? Of course there are backings and stuff but did he use like multiple recordings of the same lead vocals and layer them? The vocals on the chorus sound really full and great but at the same time kind of focused...

What are these waveforms though, those vocals look compressed as hell on the way in already

they were premixed in production, I think it was Taylor Larson who did the vocals pre-production and just sent stems. check out the remain indoors documentary

Can that Vocal Rider automation be done in Ableton?

Is that some math happening in the chorus or are my bluetooth headphones buffering? Lol It’s almost too subtle.

@assasin06soul

I haven't seen any other plugin that can do the automation thing, there are free vst levelers though (still, waves has a vst version of that plugin, maybe you can get it on a deal offer). I think the alternative is doing it manually

this is so subtle edit, none would ever notice it by ear, hence it is more for doing it because you can, not because it is needed.

so it's basically a compressor that allows you to apply it's gain reduction in the form of fader movement
