This incident investigation video is for health and safety purposes and does not include any graphic content.
This educational video explains how a worker was killed while operating a high-powered pressure washer in a pulp and paper mill.
It can be used in your health and safety training and toolbox talks when it comes to working with industrial pressure washers.
Water jet injuries are devastating, and as a result of this incident several B.C. pulp mills developed new safety practices to help prevent a recurrence.

I was a foreman for a company that did this work,we used from 5k to 20k psi,they were very lax on their safety,I worked for this company for years,but greed on the owners part ,caused me to leave ,6mos. after I left,the foreman who replaced me was killed in a exact same situation,he was using what we called a “super mole”for cleaning pipe,he put it on the end of a high pressure hose with no rigid lance or pipe ,trying to clean the end of the pipe,another person was operating the foot pedal ,the hose slipped out of his hands came around and blasted him in the neck severing his right carotid artery,his two laborers panicked to the point of not being able to render first aid,even though the medical examiner said there would of been nothing they could’ve done to save him,so many factors involved here,inexperienced people,lax safety rules ,fatigue ,improper training etc.etc.,the person killed name was “Guy”he left behind a family,I’m not saying if I’d been there it wouldn’t have happened it’s just that there’s lot of things I would of done differently.RIP GUY

Hey Tony, you replied twice to this video in the span of about 3 years.. but either way you're expressing the same story of how pressure washing can go really bad really quick. I've worked a handful of "roughneck" jobs, from climbing cell phone towers to welding to construction. Damn bro, its really sad how many companies couldn't care less about thier employees "I DON'T CARE HOW YOU DO IT JUST GET IT DONE AND GET IT DONE NOW!!" ... How many people have lost thier lives because of the "productivity above all else" culture. RIP Guy

First aid for damage to a carotid artery would be the application of an occlusive dressing (one that stops air as well as liquid, such as plastic...) to stop/slow blood flow and prevent embolism. However, the pressures involved likely all but promised an embolism. It is possible, however unlikely, to survive having one carotid artery damaged though...

It's a special tip used for plumbing. Plumbers use a similar tool to cut out roots and debri from old sewage lines. The bore tip has water spraying out the back to propel it forward and through the pipe, while the front side uses its jets to cur a path. There is no wand, as the tool is guided by the piping. It should be inserted a minimum distance and then started

Yes we can't undo the past, but we can help others in the future. However, at the time all of the risks were understood. So it's very sad that his company didn't provide the necessary training and equipment or that there was pressure to bypass those safety measures for cost and/or time. But of course the other option could be that he chose not to use those safety measures. But I prefer to think that there were other factors.

A waterjet cutter is one of the most powerful cutting tools you can get, slicing through several inches of steel as though it was butter. A washer might have low enough pressure so as not to damage steel or the item being cleaned but anything softer than that item such as flesh or bone will open up just as easily as if you were using a laser.
@ericsbraun

Hell, a laser does nothing to remove the smoke vapor in the way of the beam that robs and eats it's power. Nothing stops the waterjet!

The largest water jet I've used was a 460v 3-phase 10hp electric power washer with a 0° nozzle. It would cut any wood or plastic, etch steel and concrete. We used it to cut through sewer drain obstructions. I've fired 9mm submachine guns that had less recoil. That was a fraction of the power and water volume that this victim was using.

Pretty much everything can kill you if you're stupid enough...even your cell phone can cause fires if it's way down and it gets too hot when charging. Or there's no GFI in the bathroom and you pick up your cell when in the tub or drop it in the water. (That actually happened, btw) Speaking of dumb, there was a coffee pot that was probably the CAUSE of the GFI. It would spit the plug out when it was done... You could just see it's just BEGGING to be on the counter near the sink when that happens. Right?

Longer time for thicker harder granite but it worked efficiently. Now THAT is strong pressure!

Taken care of workers who had the same accident but with hydraulic oil. 1 guy had it penetrate his hand. In an instant it filled his hand and arm with hydraulic oil. Kinda like how you use air to separate a deer hide from the meat. A different worker had the same accident only it penetrated the skin near his eye. Again filled the skin with the oil. The reason being is a fire hose displaces significantly more mass, which means more backfire. Since most high-pressure hoses used for cleaning only displace a small amount of water, it doesn't require very much strength to control.

I worked as an operator at a chem plant in the 80ies. There were huge heat exchangers that clogged up and needed cleaning regularly. Another company was hired for that. During the couple of years i worked there, several died on separate occasions even, bc they tied the pistol grip up, slipped and the jet pierced right through. Dont remember what the pressure was; some 2000 to 3000 bar i think. At that pressure, water cuts right through you, including bone. 250 bar @ 10cm cuts through skin and flesh in seconds with a total disappearance penetration of cm's and damage far deeper than that. When they were working on those heat exchangers, none of us even went closer than some 30 to 40 meters. And im still hesitant to buy a 100 bar pressure cleaner (which i was looking for now). Ppl underestimate the force of these pressures and the damage they can do.

Not trying to be a wise ass here but if 20000 psi can cut through steel, then why wouldn’t it cut through the pipe they are trying to clean?
@AvenValkyr
@AvenValkyr 6 лет назад
because you have to hold the nozzle for a sustained length of time for it to cut through steel, and these nozzles are designed to cut through any blockage found within the pipe while the side jets basically push the nozzle through and give it a rocking or swirling motion inside the pipe. Quite ingenious actually..
@jackjones4275
@jackjones4275 6 лет назад
Also, the direction of the force is not str8 on the pipe, but 90 degrees turned for the forward nozzle and some less for the propelling nozzles. And even then the pipes may get some damage. And that is why they only last so long and need to be pressure checked after cleaning.

If you haven't done the job it's understandable you don't know about it. When I hydrovaced we snaked lines and hydrovaced dirt with the same psi. I didn't know about any of it till I done the job. We had metatarsal boots that would withstand the pressure of the water coming out the wand. The wand was a long piece of pipe with a tip on it. Hydrovacing was fun, cut dirt using high pressure water coming out a tip the size of a pencil lead and using a massive vacuum to suck up the dirt and water.

So it would be like facing on a swinging machete. I doubt if anyone could release the foot pedal fast enough without these other precautions mentioned.

Crazy didnt know you can clean the rust out of galvanized pipe instead of changing it
@240sxRule
@240sxRule 3 года назад
-Galvanized coatings prevent rust, so you mean a regular pipe. -they are cleaning build up from the fluids that flow through. -rust IS the pipe. If you remove rust, you remove pipe material, so the pipe will need to be changed if it's rusting bad.

so did the water pressure cut the guy almost in half or did it go through his mid-section?
@AvenValkyr
@AvenValkyr 6 лет назад
it probably just shot a stream of water into his body like getting stabbed in the chest with a very long pencil that fills you up with water instantly. And where you have streams of water you also have streams of air, and air is lethal for mammals when injected. So between being filled up with a half gallon of water and the probably half cup of air bubbles yeah I bet this guy died within minutes
@jackjones4275
@jackjones4275 6 лет назад
It would cut right through you. So it is probably not just a 'pierce'. Well, it depends on the distance to the nozzle, bc water loses its pressure pretty fast. Close to the nozzle, it cuts straight through you like a knife through butter.

water at high pressure is BRUTAL. If you don't get killed instantly, water at high pressure passes straight through the skin barrier. I personally don't work in the field but I would never trust some sort of skimpy line like that.
