Wow man that was some expensive filler that you laid in there! When that sucker gets recycled someone is going to be like WTF are these clankers when they try to melt it down. Thanks for sharing!

+Doug P haha thanks! it is pretty expensive, the filler is about 400-500 for the tube. The pipe - I was using carbon steel, but I own hastelloy pipe, 6"sch.40.. a 4 foot length of it. It costs $3600 for it. Its very expensive.

When you're testing for your inconel ticket, is it usually 625 used? Are there any major differences you find welding hastaloy vs carbon pipe? Does the hastaloy hold heat like 308? Haha I'm seriously thinking I need to head to the garage and start cutting some coupons and earring myself more tickets. Like always I appreciate your knowledge in your videos

+Dan Fleury I've used c22, 622, etc for testing. The way our welding tickets are written up in alberta, is a "Inconel ticket" is essentially an "F4X" ticket and the P number is P41-49 so it covers the various nickel alloys. However, if a company wants me to test for hastelloy say, then the ticket is strictly F43 F43 and the material is p43. Nickel alloys are way more expensive to practice on. I have a 6"sch.40 Hastelloy C276 pipe that is 4 feet long and costed me 3600. Filler metal is 300-400$ per tube, so its better actually to practice welding using carbon steel pipe for cost savings or else if someone wants to be very particular, get 304L stainless. Still cheaper than the hastelloy. The nickel alloys dissipate heat very quickly. heavier thicker materials like a 4"80 tube, the root would be heated to 250F, and once the root pass is in, the nickel would be heated to 450F and not allowed to drop below that temperature and you can weld on it like theres no tomorrow and it dissipates the heat very quickly. Thinner stuff like a sch.10 pipe, heat it to remove moisture out of the material. The metal is sluggish, poorly defined but with the increase in heat in the parent material, and adequate cleaning and shielding you can have to puddle turn very glossy and shiny.

Maybe you are still at Academy QC Aaron here Bay 2 , just got my inconel ticket, I can't weld with my left like that on the backside . Its very nice work i will practice your method at the hall shortly. I never thought of taking the 45 form behind Do you like to use thumb control or are you just using the pedal ?

Actually I had quit at Academy last week. Phoenix had called me looking for Inconel welders cause they couldn't find anyone that could pass the weld test, and I ended up going with them. I recommend actually going and talking to Gerry at GRB for Inconel. I've been going to Gerry for 8 years now taking his courses, testing and coming in for general practice and Gerry is just so incredibly knowledgeable its boggles the mind. Like Gerry will have you weld on say a 4" boilertube. Heat up the pipe to 250F, for the root, then 400-450 for the hot to cap and the puddle will just flow out and be really glossy and shiny, and very easy to weld. And it wont form that oxide on the material flowing in the puddle, but rather be really glossy and shiny. These nickel alloys, or duplex, titanium, aluminum - Heat input, Purge Quality/PPM of Oxygen and Cleanliness/oxide removal - this for troubleshooting will completely change how the material welds. Especially a high quality purge quality for nickel alloys. I actually went to Gerry yesterday I was there because phoenix said to take the day off because they didn't have my truck pass available at the end of the day, and since they were discussing either putting me up in the tower to do the Inconel/hast/monel or else have me do the other welders' repairs that the guy got let go or else jump me around - I went to Gerry and brought in some 10" hastelloy pipe I have and just practiced it and I would have him come in and pick the weld apart and he'd tell me many tricks on the welding as well as anything interesting about nickel alloys. I will guarantee that spending a day with Gerry at GRB will be night and day difference compared to anything else. That's why I go to him all the time. I was using the pedal here, theres times I get too comforted and start to rely on certain luxuries. And actually when I did the weld testing for phoenix on the Inconel, Chrome 9 and stainless 317 I used a foot pedal because the examiner has failed over 20 guys ive heard of and 6 last week and probably a few more tomorrow and I needed that luxary of the pedal - atleast just to pass the tests.

if you don't mind me asking what is your day job I'm assuming it's in the welding field perhaps a pipefitter because no way that a normal guy spend that much money on the stuff that you're spending it on I think it's cool shit though you're a fantastic welder
@FieldRes
@FieldRes 8 лет назад
+torcher78 I'm a Rig welder/sub contractor for various pipe welding companies. Most welders won't spend money on a lot of stuff that I buy, but it does pay off having the knowledge on how to do the different types of welding, even if its not very common

+Arthur Nuvo Yes, I've been a subcontractor to a company one time for all of 2 days to weld emergency spools and then came back a few days later for 1 day as they needed me in again. Thankyou!! =D

what is your amperage for your root and it looks good
@FieldRes
@FieldRes 9 лет назад
+mike wolfe Thankyou! I cannot remember what the current was set to. I test the heat out on a scrap piece of material prior to welding the root; the displays on the machines are usually very different. Like my vantage 400 for example, welds a 7018 electrode at 158 amps while my dynasty 350 burns it at 120 on the display, so overall I'll test on scrap and if it washes out adequately then I will start to use that current.
