The last time I made a video on increasing resolution on the quest you guys really liked it. So I am doing it once again, here is a video on how to increase the resolution on you Oculus Quest 2. This tutorial will show you how you can increase your Quest 2 resolution both using a computer and not using one. Hopefully, this video can help you out since a bunch of you were asking me about resolution mods on the Oculus Quest 2. I hope you enjoy the video :D

AS OF VERSION 25 UPDATE AND UP ON QUEST THIS NO LONGER SEEMS TO WORK. IT SEEMS TO RESULT IN SOME WEIRD THINGS. On the earlier versions, after further testing in more games and more complex maps in beat saber I would say leave the higher resolutions for simple tasks for example watching movies or browsing the web since frame rate seems to drop in more intense games. However you can still use the lower resolutions that are still higher than your base resolution and they seem to work just fine. Find whatever works for you ♥️

I've been fiddling with this during the afternoon. 3072 gives unacceptable artifacts even at home screen. It becomes very noticeable when you use the controllers. 2048 gives good results and works great for any slow-paced games, but gives me some stuttering at beat saber. Which is really sad, because the game looks way better with higher resolution textures. I'm sticking to the default settings for now. It looks like it corresponds to 1536.

2048 works pretty well in most games I have tried. Still very smooth. Even something intense like mini motor racing x..

Yeah this is actually what I have found as well. I'm actually going to stay on 2048 for now. Makes me wonder, are all Oculus Quests not the same? Maybe they're clocked differently 🤔

Listen up! You can type in any resolution you want, as long as it is divisible by 32! Do this to perfectly optimize the resolution for each game. Also, upvote this so others can see.

This is amazing, played the patched Quest 2 version of Superhot at 2560x2560, it lagged a bit in the menu area but it was absolutely fine in game, the visuals were ultra crisp.

I recently found Pokemon VR for the quest. But the graphics were hard to bear. This changed my life, now Pokedex is clear with everything else at higher resolution. You earned my sub, here you go

For anyone who wants a bit of info on this... here is a short essay of basically what is happening. The quest 2 has a resolution of 1920p on each eye. This value that you are imputing essentially runs the software at 3072p, which is more than 4K, and then is pushed through the lower resolution screen, which doing so improves the perceived resolution, like how running pc games at 4k on a 1080p monitor looks better than running it at the native 1080p. This will come with a considerable performance penalty since running beat saber at greater than 4K is harder than running it at 1920p. What about the dangers? Well, there aren’t really any if all this code does is change the render resolution of the headset, although since it is, expect higher battery consumption and more heat coming from the XR2 SOC as a trade off. If your into programming your quest and trying it out, go ahead, although I’d say if it ain’t broke, don’t fiddle with it.

I did this mod today and did have some peculiar things going on like controllers being wonky but I had also changed the refresh rate to 9HZ. So I reboot (to ensure all defaults) and changed ONLY the texture Size in sidequest app (Not using custom ADB commands) I played Beat Saber for about 2 rounds at 3072 and had no visible problems. I don't think it matters but I bought my Oculas Quest 2 just 2 weeks ago. I'll keep playing around with it.

3072 res is now in Sidequest settings! I think 1536 is a good balance for performance + battery life though.

Yes, unfortunately until oculus makes it official we have to repeat it every time. That's why the phone method is so handy :)

Yeah nice visuals but the drop in performances is unacceptable. This is because Oculus still has to release an update which will allow to run top resolution without frames dropping. I stay at default and I wait for the update. I guess a couple of weeks maximum (according to some youtubers).

Beat saber was amazing with it but kinda laggy but, fruit ninja was smooth and jaw dropping! Did you inc your cpu level to 3 for better performance?

@@sonicandroxas no, maybe ill try that, although I havent had too much lag in anything. One race in mini motor racers x got a little choppy for a split second when a lot of stuff was happening, but it was still very playable.

Unless you play the game that not include 2048 or higher res textures. And not all textures in the games actually even are 2k.

per app settings would be nice... 90hz 1280 for table tennis, 60hz 2048 for The Room etc. But I don't think 60hz works.

Thanks for the cool video! Is this side quest setting working with Virtual Dekstop too? Cause I tried the same and I can’t see the difference. I just bought the Quest 2 to use with PCVR and a I’m a disappointed. I tried Half Life with Virtual Desktop and I barely can see the difference between ultra and medium. Although the nearly objects looks cool, quality -altogether it’s blurry, not sharp the whole. I expected more from the headsets amazing resolution /pixel feature together with a high end gaming PC.

October 2021 update: The smartphone method still kind of works, but you need to set up a developer account to enable USB Debugging in Oculus Quest 2 first (look for it in the Oculus website) and then enable USB Debugging via the smartphone app. Only then will bugjaeger be able to connect to the Quest 2. Sadly, changing my resolution to 2560x2560 this way bugged the display: I could only see the top upper left quadrant of the screen (but the textures were much crisper). Setting it to 128x128 now seems to completely break the display. And alas, after restarting the headset resolutions come back to default anyway.

Wait. The Quest 2's display resolution is supposedly 1920p, so how can it go higher? Is it just the supersampling causing a cleaner image or is the actual resolution of the panel higher than what was advertised? I am not sure as to whether or not I should try it yet.

Probably they looked the resolution to 1920p because it's the resolution that keeps everything running smoothly. At 3072p, the "hub" is sure very clean and running à 90hz, but it will probably be laggy in some games.

Just did this...very nice improvement to the home screen! Tried in Bigscreen at 3072 and had issues...half the screen was weird and wire framed graphics. Robo recall started the same way but then went fullscreen without issue. Premium Bowling crashed. Beat Saber played fine although I think I noticed the tiniest bit jitters or something.Skybox plays fine but doesn't look like it makes a difference to video quality.

would not recommend to set it Higher then Normal because it needs alot more Power to run Games Smooth. Also your Battery life will go down faster.

I tried 3072 and it looks awesome. But a (slight) frame drop in most games sucks :(. Somewhere between 2048 and a littleless than 3072 is probably a good idea for games. What is the current native setting if you don't run this command?

The performance is way too low to be practical apparently. It's not bad for RU-vid and Netflix, but then the RU-vid/Netflix wont' stream at higher resolution and can hardly see any difference.

same for me I tried it but it did not change anything. I'm in developer mode. Also Whe i look at teh video it actualy sais that it did not work. Look carefully in his phone, it says settop: inaccessible or not found. So taht indicates it might not have worked.

@@hotel228 I'm not sure I get the question, but first of all, the center is what matters most. There has to be a tradeoff in order for the quest to continue to run normally. If you just crank up the resolution, you kill the framerate. So you need to give a little elsewhere.

What’s the resolution at by default? I assumed that it was using the screens full resolution in the home environment, I wonder why they would limit it.

Limited for performance issues. This creator posted a comment saying that playing on the super high resolution(3072) caused frame drops in more intense areas So running a resolution in between 2160 and 3072 is probably ideal for games and stuff

It does use the native resolution, this mod just increases the resolution further so you are basically doing super resolution. So it’s like running 4K resolution on 1080p, the image looks better

Thanks for the effort. But, you can not upgrade the resolution of the headset. That is fixed at 1,832 x 1,920, LCD panel hardware. But, you can use and increase supersampling, which is what you are doing. So the title of you video should have been "How to use supersampling on the Quest 2" - which in itself is quite interesting. You got 20.000 subscribers (almost) now. I stumbled upon your video by coincidence. (I have no subscribers because: 1. I suck at this, and 2. I don't have time to make much content :) ) But I know which channels I like and subscribe to, and that are the ones where I get useful and reliable information. You got the energy and charisma to make a good channel, but stay reliable and thrustworthy - and your channel will grow faster and much more.

@@TheMysticle Thanks for replying :) Supersampling is something PC VR users are messing with a lot, but, you are right - many Quest users who isn't into PC VR, Steam VR and so on, wouldn't know what that is. So, keep it up! I'm heavy into PC VR with my HP Reverb which I use for flight simulations and car games. I have pre ordered Reverb G2. I wasn't expecing much from Quest 2, but as a stand alone headset - wow - I am surprised!

Never. Resolution is lower to get consistent FPS. Higher resolution equals lower FPS=jerky and crappy gameplay

Do you still use this feature on your OQ2, or it was just an experiment? Did you include something from SIDEQUEST into your headset, or do you use only preinstalled features only to avoid possible unwanted issues?

I tried it and I only get around 55-60 FPS on home. Playing a game impossible to play.

@@cfitzhark1140 I have been using the OSD. I would be concerned to even put it higher. Beat Saber every once in awhile dips below 90 FPS even at the stock resolution. Other games dip more often.

Well it really looks great but it also makes noticeable lags and black bars, is there a way to optimize oculus so it will work finely on this resolution? Do I have to use my computers power or something?

How do you use Bugjaeger? The first time I connected my phone to my Quest 2, I had forgotten to turn on the headset. I clicked allow, but nothing happened when I turned it on. Now when I connect my phone to my Quest 2 it starts charging and the prompt no longer shows up in the app.

@@RichTheNoun Why do you have to stop somewhere? You can't go "sub pixel" a pixel is the smallest metric of a single source color on a display. When you zoom on a pixel, you don't discover it was actually made of more pixels. If I can zoom in on an atom and visually see that it divides into more elements, how could it be considered as the metric to calculate the resolution? Stopping at atoms feels very arbitrary to me

Can i use any usb to the usb c u plug in the occulus for changing it through sidequest or do i need an occulus link or certain cable on because i got a charging cable thats the same

Hello, when I change my resolution on sidequest I barely notice the difference on my quest 2... even on the higher resolution setting on sidequest. But its weird cause when I lower the resolution on sidequest lets say to 512 or 768 than yes I notice a decrease in resolution, just not in higher resolutions.... am I doing anything wrong?
