A level of uncertainty was declared by Katla volcano and the aviation warning code was raised to code yellow last Thursday but things seem to be cooling down again. It is however interesting that Katla has even doing this quite often recently so what is this old and dangerous volcano trying to tell us? The last eruption occurred in 1918.

I wonder if there would be a chance you reaching out to Valur Grettisson, former presenter of The Reykjavík Grapevine, for a collab? My impression is, you both would form an incredible combination to show what's going on in Iceland. I hear he's now engaged with the Red Cross of Iceland.

That is so cool that you're building a Volcano Intercept Vehicle! As a stormchaser here in the USA I've seen up close and even been inside several of the custom-made vehicles built to withstand a direct hit by a tornado, and I would imagine this is not all that different. You're going to need something heavily reinforced for rough terrain, with either a dash mounted camera or a camera turret or both, and some kind of protection device similar to a chasers' hail screen to protect the windshield against ash and ejecta... And don't forget you'll need plenty of space for the drones and photo equipment. It's going to be expensive, especially in Iceland, so maybe you should start looking for sponsors ASAP... Or... Just buy any old off-the-shelf beater and simply trust in the volcano gods to protect you, the way I often put my faith in the weather gods. Whatever you do, I'm sure the results will be interesting and entertaining, if not downright stunning, so good luck with any and all of the new ventures.

7:47 - I love your works and respect your opinions, but I cannot disagree more on that. Iceland has basically no light pollution yes, and just in the right latitude for the aurora. But the Icelandic weather is around 54% of the days are cloudy, and it is even worse during the time when you can actually have darkness, in the winter you have around the days two third with clouds. Which makes Iceland a less favorable place for that purpose, but Anyway, I am looking forward of your astro-photos as well. ps.: If you want a good place for this, on the Northen hemisphere: Hawaii, Mauna Kea; on the Southern hemisphere: Chile Atacama desert - which considered the all over best, has only around 10 days with significant cloud-cover over the area.

This number is from the Civil Defense, the 1996 flood on Skeiðarársandur after the Gjálp eruption in Vatnajökul was estimated to be 45.000 cu/m/s and the flodd that carved out the Ásbyrgi formation was around 900.000 cu/m/s. My guess is that it wont be so brutal, but wat do we know, this volvano was responsible for the Eldgjá eruption an just to look at the landscape around Vík is a story of total devestation so we better be ready when Katla wakes up..

Ég held að þetta sé ekki búið, Katla hefur verið að stigmagnast í 2-3 mánuði svo sumarið verður forvitnilegt, en þetta er slæmur tími, stærsta ferðamannasumar ever

No, no, no, Katla! Go back to sleep! We want a nice, photogenic, relatively safe eruption like the last two at Fagradalsfjall! I hope if Katla does go off the damage will be minimal. :(

The longer Katla sleeps, the angrier she gets, so we expect the next one to be of worst sort, and we cannot forget Eldgjá, so this is a major, major volcanos system...en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eldgjá

Aha - the horses show hot. That tells me that the birds that did not show hot are keeping their body heat in. Fun! Interesting that all the places to stay around Katla are booked for the summer. Good for the business owners! (Well, good if they don't have to evacuate, that is).

What sort of vehicle do you use for travel? Would there be any value to having a motorcycle for access to some areas? Or a snowmobile? And is there a way for you to gain access to restricted areas by working with scientists?
@JustIcelandic
@JustIcelandic Год назад
I have a Honda jeep now, i goes places but i would need an E-bike in the future to get to the harder to work with places, and a press pass to access to restricted areas, but i dont think it's all that hard, been checking it out lately

If Katla erupts that would mean flights in Europe will be in chaos worse than 2010!.
@JustIcelandic
@JustIcelandic Год назад
Eyjafjallajökull in 2010 was a small eruption, this could be ten times worse, check the Vedde ash layers online, that should tell you something about Katla, and the Eldjá eruption as well...This is not a tourist volcano

Are you at all concerned about the stock footage market given the intrusion of AI into this area?
@JustIcelandic
@JustIcelandic Год назад
AiI does only so much and photos are cheap so design is a market that will be hit way harder. AI videos are still not very good but might change of course

Thank you for the update and some thermal content! My suggestion for future content is once again _ANY_! I like new perspectives on regular things. Those horses have foot warmer ground. If you have occasion please give them my regards. They are beautiful creatures at any wavelength. I caught a dose of your 'need' and I now have a Lepton 3.5 sensor to make a low budget DIY thermal camera with modest resolution. long lens: (not for thermal cameras...) You might consider a Meade ETX125 Maksutov telescope or similar. With an attached camera adapter it can be a good 1900mm F/19 camera lens. Similar optical tube, Celestron NexStar 127SLT(90SLT) F.L. 1500mm(1250mm) F.R. F/12(F/14) Dangerous toys are fun! DO NOT LOOK AT SUN thru telescope WITH REMAINING GOOD EYE! :-)
