This video is about how to hit your irons and driver straight. Specifically, how do you stop your slice. I cover two aspects you need to hit a driver or an iron straight consistently. Firstly learn how to square the club face at impact to ensure a great impact position. Secondly, I give you a great drill that will stop you swinging over the top and help you get the the perfect swing path

ABOUT DANNY
-----------------------
Thanks for stopping by. I created this website as a resource just for you to support you on your golfing journey as I know how tricky learning this game can be…to say the least!
I personally found learning the game too long and difficult in the early days. I read all the books, watched all the videos but my game was not improving. Then after studying various forms of neuro science, motor learning, psychology and personal development in less than two years I went from struggling golfer to the final stage of the Open Championship.
On RU-vid and my personal website (www.dannymaude.com) I will bring you the most up to date training, training that is getting tangible results for my clients right now. I don’t know where you are in your golfing journey, you could be just starting out or maybe your body isn’t as flexible as it once was or you’ve got ambitions to slash your handicap. Wherever you are I’ve created a place here you can learn, share your ideas, ask questions and get all the support you need to enjoy this great game.
Be prepared though. If its a quick fix you are after Im not your man. Here I will give you step-by-step advice that you can take straight to the practice ground and apply to the course but it will require you to get stuck in, screw up…a lot, practice some more and then watch those scores tumble
I’ve had the pleasure of coaching thousands of students all around the world and if you are up for the challenge and are ready to get in the game…LETS GO TO WORK!

After many, many years of playing, I had always struggled with my irons. I developed what may be my version of your wonderful explanation. My takeaway and back swing are slower and smooth. At the top, I transition immediately into my downswing, accelerating sharply, down and through the ball. I now enjoy the sound of the ball buzzing away as it leaves the face of the club. I've recorded myself and swing looks good. Love your videos greatly!

Love your energy Danny, but what I like more is your ability to describe what to do in a golf swing in a manner that is easy to comprehend. You do that better than anyone I have seen on You Tube, and I have seen them all! This is perhaps your best video. I am not a slicer, but you describe EXACTLY what slicers do and EXACTLY how to fix it. Well done

Yes, these work. Getting good sweet spot on ball suddenly. Few misses, not hard to do. Naturally getting into the Sam Snead crouch on downswing and then body up to finish. Very beautiful form in mirror on finish. Also my rear elbow seems to be automatically at 90 degrees on backswing for throw down. Just some impressions...

I have managed to eliminate my once awful slice but just recently I have been pulling and sometimes even hooking my irons and have no idea what I’m doing differently this video today re the path solution seems a really simple fix ,I’ll try this on the range this weekend hopefully I can get back to hitting down the target line path . Great video to help people stop from swinging over the top. Agree 100 percent with what you say. My only two cents is to tell the player that the hands must return in the exact same position and direction at impact as one had them at set up. If hands are facing even slightly different at impact then a fault will result in anyone's swing. And of course pivoting of the body must occur simultaneously to the throwing of the club. Your drill of throwing the club under is great and can easily be activated with the trail elbow. If one simply activates the trail elbow on the downswing; it activates the lower body to respond in kind; and then it becomes impossible to go 'over the top.' Cheers
@DanielMaude
@DanielMaude 4 года назад
great explanation Thomas, one thing to consider...the hands don't quite return to the same position at impact. Due to the natural forces placed on them there will like be more lag at impact which will lead to the club being slightly delofted...one of the reasons tor players hit the ball further

Great lesson Danny. I had a lesson with my pro and he introduced me to a little face control game, you simply have 3 balls and hit 1 with an open face, 1 closed and 1 square. Get 1 point for each & aim for 3 points. Then change clubs. I did this and after a few sessions I felt my path change automatically. Weird thing the brain 😀

Great video and I like your way of teaching. You have mentioned two crucial things how to avoid slice. And I would add one more which can be very common too and which causes me a lot of trouble which is the bad habbit of bending the left arm ( if right handed) at the impact. I cannot get rid of it when hitting the ball. During the practise swing its no problem, both arms straight and tight to the chest. When it comes to ball hit, my left arm just pull back and bend behind the back during impact which results in slice as well, specially with the driver. Its just in the head, because I know I can keep them straight. Maybe you have some tip how to keep both arms straight at the end of downswing. Cheers!
@DanielMaude
@DanielMaude 4 года назад
The left arm bending through impact is because its not rotating...the left elbow should be pointing down to the ground half way through to aid the natural arc of the golf swing. If it doesn't rotate to avoid hurting it it bends instead

So I stopped Hinging my wrist and attempted to get more rotation in my back swing PRESTO !! Everything went exactly where I was aiming . I think by me breaking my wrists on my back swing was making errant shots and not allowing me to hit the ball square

Another Great video! Thanks. I was wondering how much you recommend practising on a drill like this. I have a feeling that my old “not so good” habits are sneaking up on me. How can I make sure to every time I go onto the course it’s with these movements - which obviously do not come natural to me? Maybe you could do some recommendations of a training program for a more long term change of a swing. I heard the old story of Nick Faldo who retired from competitions for 2 years to change his swing, and came back and won 6 majors. Now I do not want to spend 2 years, but 6 majors sounds good ;-) Br
@DanielMaude
@DanielMaude 4 года назад
We know so much more about practice these days and pounding thousands of balls isn't necessarily necessary. Less balls, more practice that simulates playing combined with feel exercises like this one and you will develop your swing. Somethings can improve in one session some a few weeks and others gradually improve over months. We never stop learning and improving...its al about enjoying the journey and the marginal gains

Hi Danny - This, like all your others, really resonates (and I’ll work on it). But I struggle with my body rotation - either not finishing it or how to initiate it (arm, shoulder, torso, hip, knee, etc.) - and I can lose all swing feel. My guess is the “throw” will help that, though I wonder if you can give some guidance (new or existing video?). I confess I am the great overthinker and it probably gets in my way. Thanks!
@DanielMaude
@DanielMaude 4 года назад
it sounds like you may be overthinking it...its normal Ive done myself many times...your body is pretty smart and it will turn on its own given the right stimulus. If you practiced both right and left arm throwing exercises as in this video you should notice your body working to help you throw...this is the golf turn...it may not feel like the one you've been trying to do but it is the golf turn

I have been hitting beautiful tee shots with my 3W, but consistently slice my driver. It has been an issue since I started playing golf as a teenager. I have been working on it, but have not yet found something that has helped me beat the slice. I will give these a try. Thank you. I do have a few questions. The driver is the only club that I hit with a slice. Why is that? Is it because it is the longest or least lofted club in my bag? Why do I and so many other golfers slice with the driver, in particular? Thank you.
@DanielMaude
@DanielMaude 4 года назад
You are absolutely right its mainly down to the low loft and the length. However, I believe most golfers slice because we play at a ball that doesn't move... What this leads to is we plant our lower bodies like a statue and proceed to smash the ball with out upper bodies. Upper body dominance leads to an over the top action and many slices and pull shots. The cure, activate the legs, I've got many videos on this.

I like this drill and will definitely try it. I am right handed but I did notunderstand what you did for te left-handed. I thought they would stand on the other side?
@DanielMaude
@DanielMaude 4 года назад
the reason for the other drill is for golfers who play golf right handed but are predominantly left handed, i.e they throw better with their left

Hi. Everybody preaches using the right hand on the downswing like skipping stones, like a waiter carrying a tray...Palm up. But in your downswing, as you throw the club down to the ball, your right palm is not up..it’s more facing down at the ball. I’m confused now
@DanielMaude
@DanielMaude 4 года назад
T-Rump absolutely, as it should be as this is the position your right hand needs to be to compress the ball...make sense? If not happy to help
@libsrcrazy9634
@libsrcrazy9634 4 года назад
Hi. Thanks for the reply. It seems even if you swing with the idea of keeping your right palm facing up it will naturally close and compress the ball as you rotate through. Your way seems a lot easier. I think I’m making the golf swing a lot more complicated than it really is.
@DanielMaude

Hey Danny - enjoyed the video. I've only been playing for a few months, really, but my issue at the moment is that although my irons go relatively straight and true, I can't say the same for driver. I imagine you may say that this technique would apply for both, but if not - would you mind commenting on possible solutions, given similar grip between irons & driver? Is it perhaps my psychological interaction the club length that may be the difference between a nice straight iron shot, and a sliced driver?
@DanielMaude
@DanielMaude 4 года назад
I Mark, this drill will help with driver too...remember that the longer the club the flatter the face so the harder it is to hit the centre of the club face and the more side spin they create

I have recently fixed my slice using this method. It is amazing and my handicap has come down by 7 in about 2 months. I do have something new happening. I am all of a sudden pulling balls left and it is worse with my 7 iron down. Any suggestions?
@DanielMaude

it sounds like you have fixed your club face but the path it swings on his heading left, use the drills in step 2 to improve the path and you will start hitting it straight

I will. I definitely think you are right. I have always struggled with path and my club face remaining open. I love this drill and I think I now understand where my power drain comes from. I am forcing path when I hit straight and losing power because I am not releasing. Thank you for your videos. They have given me so many great drills to improve my game.

Danny, How can you draw the ball if your swing is over the top? I always thought of the following 4 swing outcomes as below: 1. Pull--face closed at impact 2. Push--face open at impact 3. Draw--face closed in respect to swing plane 4. Fade--face open in respect to swing plane You mention the over the top hitter trying to fix face first by both pulling shot and hitting a draw. Again, here is my question: How can the ball draw if they are over the top? Thanks,
@DanielMaude
@DanielMaude 4 года назад
a ball cannot draw if its over the top as a draw is a ball that sets off to. the right of target and turns to the left of target. The curve Im initially talking about here is a pull draw - a ball that sets off left and goes left (right handers)

Hello Daniel!! I had the exact problem os you, and i bet 100% that is because you try to hit down on your driver like you do with your irons and it causes your body to help the swing. So it becomes either a slice or an over the top move, or it makes your chest to move away from the ball. Hope that helps! Cheers mate

Danny Maude I have been throwing the club with right arm dominating the swing for a long time. This would cause toe of club to close too fast. I have noticed with a flat left wrist , I have noticed reduced inconsistencies and ball flight is 3-5 yard cut. 5 hp hoping for lower. Thanks for the response!

Hi Danny: How can I stop hitting under the ball with my driver. If I miss hit my driver it is usually because I have hit under the ball and it pops up to high! Assume I am not teeing it up too high...
@DanielMaude
@DanielMaude 4 года назад
Its because the golf ball is coming off the top edge of the driver...you will see some marks if you have a look...the key is to get the feel of the club head sweeping up on the ball so it can hit the face as opposed to down which brings in the top edge

@DanielMaude
@DanielMaude 4 года назад
The very first thing to consider is your grip...basic yes but can really help you square the club face. The angle of your hands when you grip should be like holding a football out in front of you with your hands on each side just above the centre. Hookers generally grip with the following grip...put your left hand top left of the foot ball and you right hand bottom right. notice the angle of the hands. This is a hookers grip

Baloney. Take an old, tight, tee shirt and put it on with your left arm in the sleeve as normal, but keep the right arm inside the tee shirt. Your flying right elbow is causing an outside in arc. With your right arm trapped inside the tee shirt, you can't make that destructive move. You might also stick a nerf ball under your right armpit and keep it there when making half back swings. Gerry, it's really crucial that your right elbow be within an inch or so from the point of your right hip during the downswing. The best, most accurate wedge players on Tour, take half or 3/4 swings with their wedges and keep the upper part of their right arms against their torsos.
