I had the luck of meeting Henry Sy at a party that I organized with the Ambassador. He was the embassy's Guest of Honor. We spoke briefly and exchanged pleasantries. In those day, he only had that one in Carriedo St in Manila, and Shoemart in front of Intercon Hotel, which was demolished several years ago to give to the Central Station of the first Philippine subway in Makati. He had NO airs. He was rather short, but robust and straight-talking. Thanks for this video! Cheers from happier Spain! Masks off.
Henry Sy is an inspiration to all Filipinos, not just Chinese Filipinos. He really changed the retail landscape in the country. He came from humble beginnings, just went on building a business without being too ambitious, did not indulge in politics, built his first mall, in early 80s when PH was going downhill fast. RIP who knew how to do business in the PH, and with Filipinos.
Fun Fact: Did you notice that the famous Mercury Drug Store can not be found in any SM property?? It was said that when Henry was young and poor, the owner of Mercury Drug would not let him in, nor be allowed near the drug store.😉
My father's mom side was born in Fujian, China they are now living in Surigao del sur. My mom's father side came from Macau, China they are now living in Davao City.
They're basically all Chinese migrating here in the Philippines and built their business empires. It's really inspiring to watch their success stories, it just shows that with sheer will, hardwork and perseverance, you can achieve whatever it is you dream of.
nice reaction video. one thing, you guys can pause the video every time you react. the audio of your voice overpowers the audio of the video you are reacting to.
Sir Gokongwei also owns Cebu pacific and Robinson’s Malls the only thing mentioned in the video was his food business which is the Universal Robina Corporation.
Filipinos are chinese descent. they contributed a lot to population growth for centuries after centuries since the early dynasty of China -- before the Manila Galeon Trade, to Opium War, civil war, to Japanese invasion, to cultural revolution, to great famine, to present. Many of them did just change their family names But many have also retain their Family names --- Singson, Gosiengfiao, Chua, Ang, Uy, Wong, Sy, Tan, Lee, Chan, Chiu, Go, King, Gokongwei, Caktiong, Ong, Lim, Pring, and countless more. Filipinized Chinese family names --- Cojuangco, Ongpauco, Licauco, Tuazon, Pempengco, Tiangco, Tiongco, Hizon, and many many more. Hope they learn Chinese like the vietnamese.
Hello!! Please also react to a global pop group called Now United. 18 members from 18 different countries. They have a new song called Wave Your Flag. I swear it's worth it!! . There is a Filipino member in that group
Manny Villar married into the very wealthy family of the Aguilar family. His wife is Senator Cynthia Villar. The Aguilars own 86% of Las Piñas properties. That's one of his achievements.

Henry Sy's success story is tainted by SM's notorious contractualization scheme. The company pioneered the practice of hiring contractual employees who are terminated before their 6th month of employment so they do not become permanent. The saying that "for every great fortune lies a great crime" is best seen in Henry Sy's business practice.
The more local the comparison becomes, the more success is determined by hard work. When you compare yourself to those who have experienced similar levels of luck, the difference is in your habits and choices. Absolute success is pure luck. Relative success is choices and good habits.

Suggestion: try pausing the video if you are going to talk. It's hard to focus when you are commenting at the same time the narrator is talking. Thank you!
I disagree most rich is not owned by Filipinos its Chinese and Spanish, That's SM owner guy is Chinese.. who do you think runs the Philippines not the gov its these handful old rich families that own anything and everything that's why the poor remains the same and the rich gets richer.. the media is also own by who do you think.. not the gov.. its these big corporations that run the PH.
Apparently having very high marks and being a valedictorian doesn't get approval to get a large loan from a bank or large financial institution. They don't look at your grades or school medals to get approval. They look at your tangible assets or properties and bank account as your report card instead. That's something they don't teach in school. They need to know how can you pay back a large loan to start a business. They want to know if you are already employed and how much you are going to be making monthly, how long you have been employed and who you work for. They want to know if you pay rent or own your own house, apartment or condominium or still live with your parents? Do you have dependents? Life insurance? Savings? Liabilities? Car payments, etc. That's how a bank looks at your grades. These are all in Rich Dad, Poor Dad series books. I read most of his books and noticed it. Another good book is called "The Wealthy Barber" The Wealthy Barber, full title is a financial planning book franchise by Canadian author David Chilton. The first book in the series was in the business fable genre, using the story of fictional characters to convey financial advice. Followed by: The Wealthy Barber Returns
I say it again, pls pause when you want to say something. It's hard to listen when the video and you taking at the same time. We can't understand what you are saying.
not a great video to react on, so many vital information were missing-didnt even include the top 1 billionaire in the country who by the way is a pure Filipino and not of chinese decent
Alot of incomplete details john Gokongwei is the man behind behind Robinsons Mall and Cebu pacific aside from universal robina corp. its not a good video to get info from so many incomplete details. Its doesnt give justice to the wealth of the People being featured.
