As cool as seeing the artifacts they dig up is, I can't help but imagine the horrific battle that took place there and the poor souls who lost their lives on the Russian front on both sides.
After the war they just buried a lot of it, and when they sailed the ships back to the UK loaded with tanks etc they just sunk the ships in the channel. Absolute madness, what a waste. They are still finding places now stocked with stuff never opened.

You're right. Old ordnance has a bad habit of going boom without warning, even if handled with all proper precautions. Should be someone with full EOD training & equipment handling that stuff. I will admit, I've often wished to find an original Mk. II "pineapple" grenade I could restore & have as a mantle-piece keepsake. But I'm not remotely willing to risk life & limb to have one.

At 12:47 that is the insignia of the "Kettenhunde" or "Chain-dogs..." The highly trained military police of Nazi Germany that would move into an area after it was captured as the occupying force there. VERY cool find!
The Stahlhelm shown at 11:35 is actually a WW1 era helmet, probably a stahlhelm M1916 or similiar. You can identify the difference by the big mounting horns near the top sides of the helmet. Where did you find it?
Incredible finds! In the US when someone finds unexploded ordinance like grenades/mortar rounds etc. from decommissioned WWII firing ranges which there are plenty, by law that person is required to report it to law enforcement and the military get's involved. The area is cordoned off, the device detonated on site and there will be an extensive sweep for more. It's against federal law here to touch this stuff but every once in a while someone does (mishandle) and gets hurt or killed when it goes off. The old ranges were swept and most are nature areas with signs warning of potential danger. Finding human bones here is a whole different story and after reported will first be considered a homicide site and later if determined an archeological site which then is closed off. Disturbing any sites like these will get you jail time and fines and there are plenty of battle sites owing to the many wars like the Revolutionary, Civil and Indian Wars throughout US history fought on US soil.
So i am really curious..are the grenades unstable after all that time in the ground?..the rifle and pistol and machine gun ammo should be dead from moisture but i know bombs from ww2 are still found and concidered still explosive but i have watched many of your recovery digs and grenades don’t seem to get much special handling when you find them.
Grenades and mortar rounds work on chemical and striker reactions as well, so in theory they should be mostly out of action with rust and breakdown of the chemicals over time. But your right, there is always a chance no matter how small that any primed ammunition can still remain live even after all this time and should be treated with extreme caution. A perfect storm combination of events could result in detonation.
I was in the countryside near Ypres a few years ago and, as usual, there was a pile of dud shells gathered near the road. One of our group picked one up and started examining it and...the shell's content made a sloshing sound. A Belgian guy then said in some alarm 'No, no that is a gas shell!' The shell was carefully laid back down and we made a hasty retreat.
You'd better believe they can still explode, & there have been countless accidents & deaths from old ordnance all over the world. In the mid-90's, a young girl was killed in North Africa by stepping on a landmine laid by the German army in 1942, & even some American Civil war artillery shells can still explode if mishandled. There's an old relic hunters expression, "If it was made to explode, it just hasn't done it yet. And, until someone who knows how can make it harmless, you never know how or when it will. So don't be around when it does, give it a reason to, or leave it for someone else to find. Becoming a casualty to a war that's over is a stupid way to have fun.".

Once this whole pandemic is over and its safe to travel, I would like to visit Europe, and do some metal detecting while I'm there because I am very interested in history and WW2. However, I have no idea where to go though. I would most likely be staying in London, so I would preferably only have to drive up to 3 hours because it would most likely be a day trip. I'm looking for either battlefields or any site proven to have decent WW2 or WW1 artifacts. Thank you to anyone who can help me and you are very appreciated.
Would love to go myself. Most battlefields were turned back into farm land after the war. Forests around Belgium France and Germany still have plenty of treasures though. I believe a permit is required though.
Yeah unfortunately you cant just go anywhere and start digging. The land is owned either privately or some other way, by a city or similar. So i think the process is alot more complicated unless u do it illegally, which is of course, illegal.

Anything's possible, but the safety caps are still on the fuses, they haven't been armed, unless the fuses have deteriorated greatly, there's not much danger in handling them. Two to three steps were necessary to arm and fire a WWII mortar bomb, that's why combat footage of mortar crews regularly shows a pile of readied bombs near the tube. Still, yes, shouldn't handle them if you don't have to.
The old bombs of ww2 are duds now. So the modern day men are safe. Up to about the 1970's lots of civilian people used to get killed by handling these ww2 bombs, or by stepping on mines.

I have watched a bunch of World War 2 Metal Detecting videos. This is the first I saw with music playing in the backdrop and honestly, I didn't like it as much because of the background music instead of hearing the guys conversing back and forth.
There are literally millions of WW2 artifacts undiscovered in Eastern Europe... since these treasures are not as valuable as 18th century czarist gold coins, WW2 excavations are underfunded. Long story short- at the current pace, it would probably take 30 years to uncover most of what's been buried from WW2.

While this is very cool to watch and it has been close to over 100 years for many search sites. I'm left with weird thought I'm pondering on. That this may also hurt future generations 100 years from now, 500 years from now, to 1,000's of years after us. When their Archaeologists try to do excavations and digs on Famous World War Battle and Bases location sites. Since they have been picked over by metal detectors , souvenir hunters, people looking to resell what they can find to collectors.... Just as other sites in antiquity have been searched through numerous times for us today. Is this how people felt stripping the tombs of the Egyptians over the years/decades/centuries/millenniums? Are we doing the same disservice to humanity, that our archaeologists and all future archaeologists will find it harder to find artifacts and possessions of the soldiers in situ, like they do with Egyptians Tombs from being treasure hunted? With that said most of the wood and metal needs dug up to be preserved, giving to the conditions of acidic levels in the soil which are not of that magical peat bog that can preserve even human flesh perfectly for the "Bog Bodies" that are found, which are treasure to for us understanding from older to the start of ancient times for going back into history.
@Mexican Ebola sadly with the soil, if we don't dig all this up now, it rust and rot to barely chemical traces are left. Due to the soil acidic levels, amongst a few other environmental factors. UnLike how the "Bog Bodies" are able to be preserved so well and that is just difference of areas that in the grand scale of earth is relatively close. I just wish they document the search grid and locations better so that future historians and archaeologists would have images to go from. Like how as they now excavate a tomb in Egypt. , They go for massive detailed images from every angle overlapping and using LIDAR scans with each layer, so that in the future they can reconstruct 3-d models of the dig and where the artifacts were from all the documentation. Accurate enough to to show the differences in the beads shapes from LIDAR scans. We have achieved great progress in history preservation in short amount of time but still do damage to many buildings and sights today. My neighborhood is built on a WW1 base in the USA that was scrapped out and almost every material removed for community reuse by the end of WW2. Sadly there were 100's of acres of that military base, fast forward to today, it only has a 1 house standing with a 1 floor inside museum to it. Yet it was one of the larger military bases in the region. "Camp Greene" if it matters. The fact it was gutted fro the piping, wiring, walls, boards, etc..., all which has since been replaced with more modern ones on the homes/farms it was used on. Which even those farms are gone now under the neighborhood. There is big difference between Europe and the USA for history and the ability to dig on battle fields. Most of the USA's pre-USA history was not written in records and was made of materials that decayed leaving very few archaeological sites with great details and larger amounts of artifacts. When talking with online friend from over there, they explained it has let me get shovel and start digging in the yard, as we go down you will see each period of history in the layers of the dirt we have so much on top of so much. Which fosters a different attitude. I'm sadden that you can't restore the firearms to working shoot able examples again for the ones not rusted beyond salvage.
Their capacity for original funtion is far surpassed. Unless the ordinance is discovered in dry conditions, it is extremely unlikely they will detonate.
I didn't say this earlier because I didn't wish to appear arrogant, but for 20 years I was attached to my departments, "Bomb Disposal Unit." Hence my interest in this video. Obviously people will do as they please but I would definitely not advise anyone to handle unexploded ordinance. Peace.

I collect ww2 german militaria in september 2017 i bought a diary photoalbum belonging to lieutenant karl sigall he was in the afrika korps during ww2 his album consists of many photos of hitler rommel goring kesslring but it is his stoty about the unit forming in Augsburg going through partisan held territory in Yugoslavia then onto athens greece finally arriving in dernia libya and supporting erwin rommel on the tobruk front the album weighs around five kgs it is an incredible story and i am in the process of writing the story about him this album was bought from a lady on ebay for 200 dollars us so the treasure is still out thier you just have to search for it the man who owned this was living in America under a alias until he died i believe it was a family member that sold this to me she gave no indication that it was his diary and she was very secretive in selling the album to me thanks jeff

It woukd be cool if you coukd find original pictures of the time period to overlay on present day, or at least what the area looked like back then. Sometimes I wonder if these are dumping grounds or did an actual battle happen.
If any of them worked, they’d be worth a lot of money in the US. Unfortunately, though, even in the US the MP40 would be illegal to own unless it was demilled. The only legal machine guns in the US are ones that were registered with the ATF before 1986
