Hope HB.T Olympic Track Bike. We chat with Hope Design Engineer Sam Pendred, who was heavily involved with the creation of this incredible bike. If you've been living under a rock you may have missed that Hope and Lotus have collaborated to create the HB.T, a track bike that is quite unlike anything that we’ve ever seen before and is due to be raced by Team GB at next year’s 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
he HB.T takes full advantage of the UCI’s new rules that allow forks and seat stays to be up to 8cm wide, creating a wildly flared profile around each wheel that is said to massively reduce drag.

I hate the look, but love the forward thinking, and that's why I like it. I can't help but think that the UCIs competition rules hinder free thinking, and therefore performance as a whole. It causes the convergence around a design; which people complain about! I find the justification for some of the rules frustrating, as it is to preserve the 'heritage' of cycling. To me, that's someone wanting to hold back a sport to keep a hang on the 'good old days'.

Why isn’t the carbon fibre method used by lotus applied to the entire frame? I hope lotus releases this bike with a heavy frame, thicker rubber, tri spoke wheels and a three speed hub. That would transform this hope into the grand touring lotus bicycle of my dreams.

It’s clever, beautiful and bold. Of course you should factor the rider into the aerodynamics. And maybe also the aesthetics - it looked beautiful under Jason Kenny when he rode away in the Kierin.

Wider road tires would transform the comfort of a bike like this. Fat old boomers that ride so slow it holds up traffic need to give up on skinny tires and Lycra... Like strippers with stretch marks and screaming kids need to give up the pole. Haha

Superb. They have actually designed and made the thing themselves. Cervelo, Pinarello et al just bumble along with the prevailing trends, their adverts full of lovely talk about their cutting edge "innovations" being proven in tests. Those firms are actually worse than the far eastern copy houses- at least Deng Fu doesn't charge extra for bullshit. The people in this video, however, are the real deal- proper engineers. I hope they win. Good luck lads.

Your comment didn't age well. You're critisizing companies that 'charge extra' while they are half the price of the Lotus bike that: 1. hasn't shown it is advantageous in theory; 2. hasn't shown it is advantageous in practice. In the end, it seems like you could as well just buy a stock Argon 18 Electron pro for 1/3rd the price with standard Campagnolo discs instead of those fancy 1-piece discs, and a standard chain spacing. Very old-fashioned, in comparison with the Lotus very cheap, but very much winning.

@@charliecroker7005 The endgoal for team GB was to win with this bike at the Olympics, and until now, whatever improvement this bike possibly has (not even convincingly shown) for a ton of money, it doesn't come out, and is at best marginal and irrelevant.

@@charliecroker7005 fact is that your comments ("superb" and "Those firms are actually worse than the far eastern copy houses- at least Deng Fu doesn't charge extra for bullshit.") are just your opinion, and at the moment your opinion isn't supported by the results, and your comment about 'charge extra for bull' indicates you are very much biased against firms like Pinarello, but clearly not as much critisizing a multi-million dollar progamme by British cycling, Hope and Lotus that doesn't deliver.

I come from the future and well there is no HOPE. - August 4th 2021: Italy won the track pursuit gold medal. In the semi-finals, the fastest Danish rider catched & rear ended the slower rider of the British team. Hint: Doping is done by kinesio-taping your ankles.

I reckon I know how they made the wheels. I'm not sure its as revolutionary as they say though. I imagine its just a bit more fiddely than cold bondig the discs on.

Highly likely not. Why would these wizards know something the materials engineers and aerodynamicists at, say, Mavic didn't long know about? Not in this day and age. Bet it is largely a mental game to sow a seed of doubt in the competition and their riders' minds.

Very nice. Will I soon need one? Yes. Will I buy one? Probably not at that price. The disc wheels are getting better but I find it so very interesting that they still have not caught-up with my design which was not only lighter, and stronger, but predates this bike by 38 years! There is a way to greatly reduce drag & weight on the chain, and chainring. I would like to take credit for those design ideas but I can't. They too are over 40 years old. The concept is UCI legal, so why not do it? For some reason advances are slow, and it seems that thinking outside the box is a very difficult thing for engineers.

I really like it when companies go a different path and not have everything look the same... However, the surface quality and smoothness looks really imperfect and kind of amateur. I wouldn’t want to ride this thing.

Mitchell Steindler well, I have been to track races an none of the bikes used (BMC, Mercx, Cervelo, Felt, Koga) looked nearly as makeshift as this thing does.

It doesn't imply any lack of strength or quality however. Races cars, even Formula 1 cars for example, often look downright scruffy on the bits where surface quality isn't important.
