Changing the game | Team GB's wild Olympic track bike

British Cycling debuted a groundbreaking track bike a couple of weeks ago in its bid for Olympic glory in Tokyo, Japan. Without a doubt, the bike is visually striking, and a clear departure from conventional design, with its unusually widely-spaced fork blades and seatstays. This was all done in the name of aerodynamic efficiency, we surmised, and after a trip to Hope Technology in Barnoldswick, UK - who manufactures the bike for the federation - it turns out we were right.
But what’s surprising is how relatively minor that gain is, and the lengths British Cycling went to extract that advantage.
According to Hope design engineer Sam Pendred, the overall layout of the bike was dictated by the philosophy that the bike-and-rider should be considered as a singular unit, not something that should be considered after the fact. After all, even the most aerodynamic bike needs someone to propel it through the air. Several bicycle companies have already been using lifelike mannequins in aerodynamic bicycle design, mind you, but Team GB took the idea further still.

From the early closed systems with adjustable reservoir diaphragm to the latest (finally ) set of tech 3 levers and V4/ E4 calipers on my latest build... The best goddamn brakes available period I still have several Mono6Ti calipers and mono minis in use all are easily 10yrs old+ and still rock solid. What other brake Co. had the audacity to machine a one piece 6 piston differential bore caliper for a freeking bike ... SICK! barely covers it...

As hambini had stated conventional forks lead to a venturi effects which increase the drag on the bike. This frame looks to remedy that phenomena by introducing wider forks. But if the UCI changed their rules to allow for a monoblade fork you wouldn't get the venturi effects and have a faster bike stiffer bike. With the forks being moved further outside their is a trade off between aerodynamics and stiffness

Is there a minimum weight requirements for track bikes?
@Hevlikn
@Hevlikn 4 года назад
Yes! The 6.8kg rule is standard for all UCI events, as during the discovery and initial implementation of carbon fibre, manufacturers would make bikes so flimsy that they would buckle, shear, snap or all sorts of other dangerous failures. Modern CF engineering has reduced the need for as many layers of material, hence why you can get 700g frames. I'm not sure there are weight requirements for individual components though, but if that frame is 1.5kg, it's likely the wheelset is heavier

It would be much more interesting to hear about the reasoning behind that stay being so wide joining the saddle tube so high up,
@darraghobrien1028
@darraghobrien1028 4 года назад
My first guess would be that it stops the wakes of dirty air from each side of the stay from hitting eachother and crating more turbulence. Similarly, they might have joined it to the saddle post further up to keep it away from the dirty air coming off the tires. It also enables one titanium part to be used both to connect the saddle post and the seat stays, saving weight Disclaimer: just a guess😂

And the wide fork as well. The video ended and we hadn’t heard anything about the actual bike.
@dom69foco

W-J Racing It’s true that the ITU is under the UCI and that Ironman is partnering with the ITU, but you will find that ITU and UCI rules differ on some key points, such as saddle position, and that Ironman rules aren’t really affected by the ITU. Barely any bikes are banned in Ironman, the Diamondback is an exception to the norm, and thus this Hope bike would perform far worse at Kona, than say a Canyon speed max or a Specialized shiv.

I see there are many armchair patent law experts in the comments. There's still time to show some humility; stop regurgitating rhetoric and leave it to the professionals to investigate. Infringement of someone else's patent isn't decided solely by whether or not your own patent is allowable, so until there is an official legal decision there's little point presenting ones verdict with such certainty.

Having seen it up close, how the handlebar assembly is attached is very messy and clunky, not very smooth lines. Could well not make a difference aerodynamically but when you're paying a stupid amount for a bike you want it to look well put together. There are some more bikes and wheels to come out with some pretty interesting concepts as well. We haven't seen the last of the tech arms race before Tokyo.
