A clever idea and well thought out and implemented.👍 In my situation, though, I could go to local stores and buy the right size dowel in the time it would take me to make the parts. At my age, time is important. There's always eBay and Amazon or similar, but not everywhere so this could be life saving in certain situations.
Nice and effective. But when everything turns black, you're going way too fast. The steel of the sawblades gets too hot and soft, and go blunt very quickly.
Would that also work on harder wood? I see the passing holes in the tool burning as the rods go through. They're made of soft and light pine - wouldn't they better be made with harder material? and why not simply made with some metal plate to which you could attach those old saw-blades?
IMO this looks like ash or oak, not pine (which does lend itself to this technique with less scorching due to the resinous remainder after seasoning/treating).. but I understand what you're getting at (& hence the 'finishing' with the sandpaper 'by hand'). If you're after a better finish use wire wool & wax instead of paper for the last stage, but it still won't be as smooth as a bought-in machined product
ive been watching all these cool inventions on youtube but this one and because i love working in wood makes this idea brilliantttt , thanks for this invention bud , dont even need an expensive lathe to do this !!
True, but the inventor can have his piece of dowel without needing a vehicle, driving to the store, paying for timber, probably having to buy a minimum length, driving home again .... And he's recycled old jigsaw blades.
You could turn a hole saw bit into the same tool. Cut the back off a hole saw bit, in bed it in the timber with the hole going through it, then surround the hole saw with jigsaw blades in a star shape inbeded in the timber, bend the hole saw blades slightly inwards to prevent friction.
