Everyone in the comment section saying “factory farming is wrong!” But those are also the same people that say “we need to find efficient ways to feed lots of people!” Guys. Factory farming is the solution to feed large masses of people.

I'm really now appreciate others that take on these jobs...the STRESS they must all be under, working like automated machines themselves...all timed by the second...and so repetitive. I'd go crazy within a week, and would just dread coming into work each day, KNOWING exactly what I will be doing...how I will be doing it...and no change up...you're a human machine. I wonder what the absentee and quit rate is on these processing lines...., and not the least...standing all day....moving, cutting, turning, twisting, bending.....

Not gonna lie, the background music does lend an air of cheerfulness in what is otherwise a rather macabre process.

I can't lie, I saw people processing pigs on a subway train in the thumbnail and was highly confused.

The last time I worked in a pork processing plant was in 1978. The automation shown is this great video really amazed me.

The automation process never cease to amaze me. There is nothing an engineer and time can not achieve.

The pig is the most efficiently processed animal. I once saw an illustration pointing out every piece of the pig went somewhere. Obviously 95% for food but the other 5% went to animal food, cosmetic ingredients, soap and after everything else, fertilizer.

Watching while tapping my fingers and toes to the beat and dreaming of bacon in the morning.

I grew up on a pig farm and worked there for a few years too. Sold 98% of them to the slaughter house but never got to see what goes down. This here is impressive.

I use to work at a pork processing plant. They made everything from hams, their main product, to lunchmeat. When they were still killing the hogs and had an opening on the kill floor, a few of us girls wanted to know how they did it. So the man that was the H.R. manager took us to the kill floor. They back a hog truck up to the loading chute. As the hogs ran up the chute, a man put a USDA stamp on the rump. The hog would step into the v-shaped vice that held them still while another man stuck two prongs in each ear to electrocute them, these two men would swap jobs every day because of the mental stress involved. The H.R. manager said the hogs don't feel anything, I don't think that's true. I grabbed an electrical fence one time and I felt it. The hog collapses and the next man hangs the hog upside down and cuts the main artery in the throat. The manager said that the USDA requires them to drain all the blood from the hog. And they need a beating heart for that. If a ham had a blood clot in it, the ham had to be rejected. The hog then was dunked in boiling water then the hair stripped. By the time the hog gets dunked in the water, it is dead. Then the hog is passed through flames to burn off any remaining hair. Then it gets butchered. After I saw this process, I couldn't eat pork for a long time. The pay was good, but the work was hard and employees had trouble with carpal tunnel syndrome. The turnover rate was high, and the company encouraged bullying among its employees. That way the supervisors didn't have to stand around and watch you. The pace was fast and it was more efficient to have the other employees tell you to watch what you're doing wrong and they weren't gentle about it. Quite a few smartasses. And that's not including the supervisors getting on to you. If you tried suing because of a workplace injury, they paid off your attorney and you lost the case. I know of an ex-employee that it happened to.

I volunteer at a food bank and find this video fascinating. I'd much rather work at the food bank rather than the factory as I enjoy the gift of giving food to those in need in person. At the food factory I would be miserable doing the work with out sociability.

i used to work in a rendering plant in the 80's. they have come a long way. for those who find this disturbing, where do you think your meat comes from? I saw some pretty nasty stuff on the kill floor but that never deterred me from eating meat.
