Today we have loads of Incredible New SpaceX Starship Flight 4 Info, and Great News from the FAA! Outside of that though, it has been a gigantic week of action packed with terrific scenes and new surprises. Axiom Space’s next-generation Extravehicular Mobility Unit or EMU. Loads of Starlink action again this week. The network is growing at an astonishing rate with the service now available in 100 countries! It was action again for Virgin Galactic’s VSS Unity, but also, for the last time. Just this week Stoke space announced that they successfully completed their first hot fire test of a stage one engine of their Nova rocket.

If you watch synced video of the OLM and chopsticks during the boosters set down in the water... they moved the chopsticks and activated the water again to virtually simulate the towers actions while the booster was doin its thing in the water. So we know the water deluge was not damaged because it was turned back on during the boosters soft water landing and the chopstick that moves faster closed so I think they got some good virtual catch data as well.

@cheeseninja1115

the main reason it took so long is that a lot of businesses didn't invest in the idea of reusability until it was prove. Once it was they then had to hurry to invest into new programs to catch up. As it is rocket science, this took years of development just to get the groundworks moving. We should be seeing a lot more reusable rockets very soon.
@stephenbrooker7097
@stephenbrooker7097 3 дня назад
Let's say a reusable rocket is twice as expensive as a single use rocket. And has a life of twenty flights. If we then amortise the cost of the reusable rocket over the number of flights it makes. It works out as being ten times cheaper than a disposable rocket. Or ten times less profit for its manufacturer. That is why until SpaceX reusable rocket technology has not been developed.

The FAA is more confident in Starship's durability compared to a Boeing 737 MAX. The old Boeing B-52 could land with 90% of its tail fin broken off. The 737 MAX used no redundancy in a critical flight control sensor and leaves the factory without important bolts. The Starship can land with one of its control fins exposed to reentry plasma.

Uhm, no. Only one FFSC design has flown, and it’s got 1000x more test data and iterations than the next in line - yet is STILL experiencing failures on a fairly regular basis (compared to something like the RS-25s reliability.) Lighting it for a short duration burn is one thing, getting it reliable (and apparently, far more simple and compact) is a totally different story. It’s still extremely exotic and difficult to master, they’ve got a long road ahead of them - I just hope their funding sources understand that it’s going to be a marathon and not a sprint.

@EstorilEm Sure. But there was a time when you could get a PhD in carburetor science. Progress occurs, the difficult problems get solved, the black arts that cross the gap between theory and practice get learned. In the 1960s the rocket engines of that day, largely derived from ICBM engines, barely worked for long enough to get to orbit. But materials science, control systems, digital electronics, computing science, and lots of empirical experience have changed the game. And will continue to change.

It’s incredible how much more complicated Stoke’s full-flow staged-combustion engine is compared to the Raptor. Must have 10x as many components. 😳 I realize they’ve got a lot of sensor and test stand equipment on it, but just the piping alone is crazy. The funny thing is that, it’s kinda what I’d expect for that type of engine. Every time I see the new raptors, I feel like they’re missing half the piping / components. I just can’t comprehend how such an advanced engine works with so little plumbing and electrical. Apparently Stoke’s engineers can’t either. 😂

Stokes engine is a very early prototype, the final engine will look nothing like this and a refined final engine will be even less complicated. Look at the original Raptor compared with V3, they look like totally different engines. SpaceX's mantra is simplicity and that drives their design decisions. Others may not have this goal and full flow engines are incredibly complex to start and control so Stoke's engine may never get as refined looking as Raptor.

I really hope it is made crystal clear ahead of time that the new tile system is not there to solve the melting fins, and that it most likely will not have any effect there. Those solutions are coming later. Goodness knows the small cult of naysayers are desperate to rebound from having their week ruined by IFT4, and if they can get away with pretending that the new tiles were supposed to fix everything, that will count as a win in their book.

@@TheDisgruntledImperialthey probably hate the concept too, because they refuse to understand the genius thinking behind it. Lots of people reject revolutionary ideas, because they can't understand it. Look at how many people laughed at SpaceX for talking about landing Falcon 9 for the time, saying it can't happen. And I'm sure for the first year of attempting, all the naysayers said, "see told you they can't do it"

Good on SpaceX's incredible engineering, manufacturing, and construction teams for pulling of the incredible progress. And for nailing the flight so well that the FAA signed off. Also, go Axiom on those suits. Those look really good. The helmet looks like it's drawing a little from those used in the film Prometheus. Fun seeing them test it out with the HLS mock as well. Now that Starship has had an actually successful ballistic flight, a proof of concept to shut the naysayers up... we should see things starting to really pick up steam. Same as we did with the Grasshopper/Falcon9 system, and with Starhopper even. Nailing that catch will be huge. And hopefully we'll get our first legit orbital flight not too many away from now. Any word on on orbit refueling? Or are they looking into some other method for handling that rather than multiple tanker launches and transfers? Clearly something has to happen.

Marcus, I've never left a comment before but I'm an avid fan. I've just got to say, I'm impressed with the professionalism of the content you and your team give us, time and time again! I don't know HOW you put it all together in a week (sometimes, covering news that happened just an hour before you committed.) (Not to talk of me, but I put out about 30 still photographs of dogs at my dog park in Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico, every week. It's a lot of work, and I do it myself -- but I don't have to write a script, worry about copyrights, thank contributors: all the stuff you and your people do routinely. I'm exhausted just editing photos in Adobe Lightroom and getting them up on a social media platform!) Frankly, I don't know how you and your team do it. News tidbits, the animations dovetailed into the whole -- scripts which flow and seem impromptu even if they can't be. Your wry sense of humor makes it all work. Just wanted to thank you. From all of us who try to put up content, we know how hard it is for you and yours to do what you do. Great job. I can't think of a single suggestion. I DO like the in-depth videos you produce, especially the Mars one a few weeks back. And the interviews you do are always lively. I think Elon should agree to be interviewed by you every three months or so. It would be good for SpaceX and great for you. . . . All the best. ~Eduardo Diaz McKay
