To think that this aircraft is 54 years old and still more exciting to see than anything today. Yet we also see the best looking jet fighter ever made, A 65 year old CF-86 !
@@deborahchesser7375 The F-4 is another 62 year old fabulous mean machine but it was tandem and not single seat fighter although both (F-86 & F-104) had tandem models for training. Both the USAF Thunderbirds and the US navy Blue Angels used the F-4 back in the 1970s. These made for lung crushing sounds during their crowd pleasing shows. The F-4 are very impressive machines ! The Canadian Golden Hawks demonstration team used the F-86 back in the 1960s and what a show they put on ! I'll stop now because I'm starting to give away my age. Thanks for the comment.
As a kid I used to visit my German grandparents in southwestern Germany - this was in the '70s during the Cold War and we'd regularly see the German F-104s streaking over the pasturelands at low levels, doing their training. It was quite the sight (and sound!)
I got my PPL in 1978. I'd love to fly to airshows, just to see (and hear) the 104. Never got over looking at those wings. Seriously folks, I have tables that are larger and thicker!
My father retired from the Air Force in 1969 originally flying P47s during WWII. We were stationed at several bases during his career one of which was Eglin AFB, Florida, from 1956 to 1960. We heard these and others flying everyday.
Fabulous aircraft ! I work at a shop that services the J79, some of which are running in Starfighters, and in other aircraft. I won't try to put a link here, but I have a playlist of test runs called "The J79 Turbojet engine" that you might enjoy.
I was stationed at Luke AFB in 1971 and there was a whole squadron of F-104s that were owned and flown by the Luftwaffe as they were training on the Gila Bend Gunnery Range now called the Barry M Goldwater bombing range. The main aircraft USAF pilots were being trained in at the time was the F-4 Phantom. I got to see plenty of both while stationed there.
I seen two of them flying around Edwards AFB, California around the early 1980s. They were both painted white. They both belong to NASA. I loved that sound they made. Awesome.
About twenty years ago I lived under one of the flight paths of San Francisco International. One day I was in my driveway when I heard something unlike normal jet noise, so I looked up. F-104!
When l was a f16 crew chief in 94 in the north of Norway l was lucky to welcome 2 italien 104's. They had the (according to my very old boss) upgraded engien so the classic 104 sound was missing when the fly over us. All the old guys was flying down the memory line that day. Thanks for sharing sir 🇳🇴☕
I was Stationed at Hahn AB West Germany in the very early 80's during Exercises German and Italian F104's would "Attack" the base quite impressive. Once I was on the roadway above St Goar on the Rhine when a Luftwaffe F104 flew about 50 feet above the river it was quite the show
Same thing happened at Sunny Zweibrucken, '81-83. They used to pass below the base since it was elevated. The smoke would then let you know what type of attack it was.
Bel video.
Makes my arm hair stand! Goose bumps! Back in the 70's I was an air cadet at cfb penhole Alta. 104 out of cold lake did a LOW altitude fly over at our nco graduation..wow! It literally sounded like a "tie" fighter from star wars!
we had these planes flying over our home all the time in northern Netherlands in the 1960's , the dutch air force had about 3 or 4 airfields where f-104's were stationed.
I remember that sound from my youth when the Dutch Airforce operated the F104's, until the F16's came in, with a whole different noise.. :-) and now, we have F35's...
I joined the Canadian Air Force too late to work on the CF-104 by about 5 years. A lot of guys at work did their time on them, and I got to hear some awesome stories. One guy was in Baden when a pilot accidentally punched his tip tanks, and after landing tried to fix the switches to cover it up, thus punching off the pylons on the taxiway...oops. There's a picture to prove it.
The Taiwanese Air Force flew these in the mid-1960s. Awesome fighter! The leading edges of the wings were so sharp that red protectors were placed on them while parked.
The F-104 was called the widow maker! If you wanted to get one, it was easy. You bought a ten-acre field and waited a few months. One F-104 always fell into your field.
I really like the F-104 Starlight J79 engine sound is very attractive The sound of the gain intake is also very charming This looks like a G But I see JET on the fuselage Makes me suspect it's a Mitsubishi J See its vertical tail Again wondering if it Super Starlight Twin Seat TF
Finally! Without tanks! As nature intended it to be!! Would have loved tobsee a knife edge approach or 90 degree banked turn just to show those tiny wings
I had an old, crappy Testor's model of the 104 and it simply did not do the aircraft justice. Perhaps it was the diminutive scale (or perhaps it's because Testor's took so many shortcuts) but the real aircraft is a badass.
