CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The President (Bill Pullman) barely escapes the White House as alien vessels open fire on Los Angeles, New York and Washington D.C.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A group of intrepid humans attempts to save the Earth from vicious extraterrestrials in this extremely popular science-fiction adventure. Borrowing liberally from War of the Worlds, Aliens, and every sci-fi invasion film inbetween, director Roland Emmerich and producer and co-writer Dean Devlin present a visually slick, fast-paced adventure filled with expensive special effects and large-scale action sequences. The story begins with the approach of a series of massive spaceships, which many on Earth greet with open arms, looking forward to the first contact with alien life. Unfortunately, these extraterrestrials have not come in peace, and they unleash powerful weapons that destroy most of the world's major cities. Thrown into chaos, the survivors struggle to band together and put up a last-ditch resistance in order to save the human race. As this is a Hollywood film, this effort is led by a group of scrappy Americans, including a computer genius who had foreseen the alien's evil intent (Jeff Goldblum), a hot-shot jet pilot (Will Smith), and the President of the United States (Bill Pullman). While some critics objected to the film's lack of originality and lapses in logic, the combination of grand visual spectacle and crowd-pleasing storytelling proved irresistible to audiences, resulting in an international smash hit.

Goes to show that tried and true techniques like models and puppetry ages better and feels more realistic then CGI, becuase cutting edge CGI just looks dated six months later, while stuff that exists in the real world is just more convincing. They should be using CGI to enhance traditional special effects instead of abandoning them. Pacific Rim would be ten times better if they just made the Jaegers an update of the kind of techniques they used in Stingray or Thunderbirds and then used CGI to harmonise everything.

I truly feel like the 90's was a "golden age" for effects driven films that still hold up well. Because the effects were a blend of miniatures and CGI, and it was still very costly. So studios also heavily invested not only in casting, but the screenplay, music, and making sure it was a true "Blockbuster" that would draw people to the theaters, and keep them coming all summer long. Those days are LONG gone in Hollywood, oh how I miss the 90's.

practical effects are nice, but thats not the problem here its all about stories, CGI could make the movie a whole lot better but without good stories, eventually it just straight up trash comparing practical effects and CGI just like ded boomer comparing voiceless movie such as charlie chaplin and movie with voice

Blockbuster movies like Independence Day and Twister, both from 1996 generated a real sense of enthusiasm that I haven't noted for other movies over the past quarter-century. I was privileged to be a part of a focus group/survey for the VHS release of Independence Day back in early-September 1996. I got a decent check for my 90 minutes and received an advance copy of Independence Day one day before everyone else delivered by FedEx. Thanksgiving Eve 1996 (biggest party night of the year) my wife and I went to a nightclub and Independence Day was being screened on several TVs in the place with the volume down of course but half the patrons in the place were doing the dialogue and sound-effects from the film.

Fun fact; the effect of the huge wall of fire ripping through the cities was achieved by building detailed miniatures, then simply standing the base vertically. The explosion was then set off at the base of the miniature set and the camera aligned so that you get this still- impressive effect of a huge fireball consuming the city.

The problem with Bay and Snyder is that their action scenes are so shaky and chaotic. You see explosions and action everywhere, but you don't get a clear shot of what's happening. At least Emmerich knows how to actually show something being destroyed and make it enjoyable. I hope he'll keep this movie's action direction for Independece Day: Resurgence.

I know the shot of the White House being destroyed was very expensive to make but it was worth it. The shot of it blowing up is an optical effect NOT a DIGITAL effect. They built a model of the White House and made it right down to the very last detail because it had to look EXACTLY like the White House. Then they carefully rigged explosives inside it and blew it up but played it in super slow motion. IT WAS PERFECT! It just goes to show that we don't need to use CGI for every single effect when optical effects to the job nicely. Plus, they make the scene look more real. When all special effects in a movie are done with CGI, it makes them look cheap and there are a lot of people who don't like cheaply made movies. Some people prefer to use CGI because they believe it to be cheaper and quicker. But there are a lot of people who enjoy getting their hands dirty to make a spectacular movie effect happen because when it's finished, it's hard work to be proud of. And they were very proud of that White House destruction scene.

On the one hand, I agree completely with you that movies are written crappily these days. On the other hand, let's not forget that movies are usually made to cater to the widest audience as possible based on pre-screening focus group surveys, so it's less "They can't write deeply nuanced movies" and more "The modern cinema goer has the attention span of a hyperactive dog".

The problem with Independence Day is that nothing that follows reaches the heights of this scene. It is still an enormously entertaining blockbuster, but the arrival of the aliens and the attack are masterpieces of editing (how the scene jumps from place to place ratcheting up the tension), soundtrack and sheer awe. They are still unparalleled to this day.

Genuinely surprised it hasn't already been placed into the United States National Film Registry.
