The sequel is definitely not as good as the original. They made some pretty dumb decisions with it, but at the same time, I didn't hate it. The ending to the sequel is more realistic than the ending to this one, imo. Humans would not have won this encounter by any stretch of the imagination. Might as well have asked a group of cavemen to attack an Apache helicopter in flight.

Makes no sense, right? Aliens right in front of them and they still don’t believe. My only issue, if this movie was based on reality, is how fast the spaceships go. If they go the speed they purportedly go, not one missile would hit them. We wouldn’t be able to react fast enough to shoot them down.

One of the greatest summer blockbusters ever. Meant for a July 3rd release. But then it was pushed to July 2nd for huge demand. A cast of this size well built for a film this size. The actors they casted were all enjoyable to watch. Filmmakers, director Emmerich & writer Devlin had prior hits (Universal Soldier & Stargate) and this was their biggest one yet. The teaser trailer had everybody losing it. Especially with The White House getting torched. The speech by Bill Pullman as president Whitmore to the last line of defense is one of the great movie speeches ever. The merchandise was crazy. Toys, video games, prequel publications (one was a novel and the other was a comic from by Marvel), etc. The cropduster's character was actually abducted as presented in Independence Day #0 from Marvel Comics. No.1 film of 1996 and Academy Award winner for Best Visual Effects. As for the 2016 sequel aka Resurgence........ Well you'll have to see that for yourself.

The movie was originally filmed with Russell being rejected to fly in the attack on the alien ship because of his alcoholism, and he was heartbroken because it was his chance to redeem himself, and flying was the one thing he could actually do well. When all the fighters had expended their missiles, Russell showed up in his cropduster with a missile strapped to it already knowing that he would have to sacrifice himself by ramming his plane onto the aliens' main weapon to stop them. The scene (which, because it wasn't used in the final version of the film, doesn't have full special effects) is available on RU-vid if you want to see it. At a test screening, people couldn't help laughing at how ridiculous it looked when Russell's old biplane was keeping pace with the supersonic jet fighters that were "plowing the road" for him on his final attack, so they changed the story to what you see now. To me the biggest improvement from the change is the emotional scene when Russell looks at the photo of his children and resolves that he has to sacrifice himself for their sake.

@Daveyboy100880 10 месяцев назад
Yeah, I was surprised when I saw that scene on the DVD, and very thankful that they changed it! It did make me realise why everyone seems so surprised when he turns up with the last missile, though, and why his cockpit is different to all the others and why his jet seems to be going slower than it should and manoeuvring in odd ways (apparently they simply assigned the F-18 to the exact same flightpath as the crop duster, as they didn’t have time to redo the shots completely). I think they did a really good job in rewriting it!

Bill Pullman's speech as the President is... it's such a trope, it feels like a given in a movie like this, it shouldn't be as good as it is, but goddamn does he knock it out of the park. The delivery, the music swelling, the stakes that have been raised so high up to this point... perfect. Funny detail, the little take he does where the speaker doesn't work at first wasn't scripted, it just kind of happened his first time stepping up to the mic and they kept it in the final edit.

I went to the premiere of this movie, with the stars of the movie and red carpet. I was fortunate to win the tickets from a radio station. It was terrific seeing it in theater with the stars (of course, their whole area was roped off from us regular people). But as fun as that experience was, the only thing that could have made it better was Jen's "Suck it, Weasel!".

I got special tickets to the premiere of this, and this was the only movie I've ever spoken up during. When the air force does their first strike against the aliens after the alien attack, as the fighters are all coming out of the ship to attack, I very audibly said, "Oh, bad word" at that point. And don't bother with the sequel, unless you want to be as disappointed as I was.

1st off great reaction as always 2nd this is one of those movies that you needed to see in theaters to get the full impact, I did & it was the loudest I’ve ever heard an audience cheer since Return of the Jedi & haven’t heard anything remotely close since.

If you're in the mood for more sci-fi I'd highly recommend "Oblivion" starring Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman. I know how you love a good film score and the music in this by M83 is fantastic. By the way it's written and directed by Joseph Kosinski, the director of "Top Gun : Maverick".

I was lucky enough to watch this in the theater on its opening weekend, and watched it countless times on VHS. Had a couple of the alien toy figures (and the floppy disk games that came with them!) as well. Having the movie take place on the same date as its opening was such a simple, but brilliant move. The story is pretty cheesy, but the actors make it so watchable. As much as I love Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith (and yes, this and Men In Black are peak Will Smith), I was most hyped to see Dr. Okun. He was played by Brent Spiner, who played Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Speaking of which, you should try giving the older Star Trek movies a chance. Wrath of Khan is an excellent place to start... All that aside, the visuals were absolutely mind-blowing. Once you saw the White House get destroyed in the teaser trailer, you _had_ to watch the movie. Looking back, it's arguably _the_ definitive 90s summer blockbuster.

This really nailed the "Event Movie" at the time and felt like it had it all. Great cast, solid humor, chemistry between Smith and Goldblum but lots of moments before they meet, and great scale for the invasion. In some kind of marketing magic, they got everyone onboard with "ID4" where you'd just see that everywhere and everyone knew what it meant. Looks like you had a ton of fun with this one! We were all enthralled by "the speech" too and i remember my theater clapped at the end of it!

A lot of that came down to the fact that CGI was used only sparingly. The explosions, for example, were all done using miniatures and practical effects, which is why they seemed so realistic - they were real pyrotechnics.

The same composer did the same film score for “Stargate” which was made by the same director and writer in 1994. That film is what gave them the green light to make Independence Day. You will hear the same similarities in both film scores. That guy is one of my favorite all time film composers and the two soundtracks i listen to still today.

Funnily enough, I actually just watched it myself not that long ago. Defintely one of my favorite movies that I've seen in recent years. (I watched it for the first time last 4th of July.) Thomas' speech is one of, if not, the best part of the movie. "Should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice, we will not go quitely into rhe night. We will not vanish without a fight. Today, we celebrate our independence day."

I like how you noticed Judd Hirsch's performance as the dad. He really roped in the different personalities together, besides playing a cute loving dad (when isn't a dad's caring love cute?). He made his son confront the issues he had with the President and his ex? wife (just estranged or actually divorced?). He tamped down the squawking by the weaselly Secretary of Defense. He tried to comfort everyone during the oncoming attack, while leading the prayer group. Great call on including him for the "LOW KEY MVP".

16:46 Somewhere out there someone has probably uploaded the Movie Magic episode dedicated to Independence Day, but the general gist is: They build miniature city blocks that hung vertically, and were wired with detcord (explosive string, pretty much). They also had a pyro nozzle at the base of the vertically hung piece. A super high speed camera looked down on the blocks, and once it was at speed, they set off the pyro and the detcord followed in milliescond intervals. The whole shot took all of about 2 seconds total before the pyro flame burned out and the detcord had finished, but they were filming at like 5,000 frames a second so they could slow it down to make an explosion like that take three minutes. The more impressive ones are the buildings in Los Angeles and New York that are hit. Those were standing models about 5 feet high and absolutely lined to the teeth with coils of detcord. High speed camera and sequentially firing the cords gave the layered explosion effect going down the buildings.

They had a special screening of this on July 3rd, 1996. I saw it in theaters before the events were even supposed to have transpired. It was surreal. Oh, and you know the submarine they showed? The USS Georgia, SSGN 729 is based out of Kings Bay, Georgia. When I was stationed in Kings Bay, I was on the USS Wyoming, SSBN 742. I did at one point get the opportunity to board the USS Georgia once. It was for the occasion of the Army/Navy football game. A bunch of us stood on top of the USS Georgia while a crane mounted camera filmed us from overhead shouting, "Go, Navy. Beat Army!"

Jen! You made an excellent point about everyone thinking Russell Casse was crazy, EVEN AS THE ALIEN SHIPS WERE APPEARING OVERHEAD. One of the dumbest things Emmerich did was to have Major Mitchell ask for a little background, to which Russell mentioned how he wanted to get back at the aliens for abducting them. So Emmerich has the Major look at his colleague and make a "this guy's nuts" look to his colleague. Really? The earth's been under attack and major cities have been laid waste, and they're looking at each other like they don't believe him. Emmerich does a lot of stupid things in his movies for laughs. I could've done without that one.

Jen! You didn't seem to have a recognition of the computer's greeting to David, "Good morning, Dave." Did you recognize the graphic? In case you didn't (and this will not spoil the movie it's from), it was an homage to "2001: A Space Odyssey." The graphic was the "eye" of the AI computer, HAL.
