Jenny 5 is alive! Johnny 5 is one of the most endearing robots in cinema. He's so emotive with his 'lashes', eyes, and body language. It really is a great feat of prop work to make him move so well, especially when interacting with objects and people. You need to see the sequel asap ✌

Now Short Circuit 2!! I think it is just as good. They were my favorite when I was a kid.

Part 2 is great too. Lots of laughs between Johnny 5 and Ben , it's also much more emotional.

I remember liking the sequel as well. A fun fact, the voice of Johnny 5 also was also Frank the pug in the Men in Black movies.

Fisher Stevens did such a good job playing an Indian guy that actual East Indians thought he was one.

If this movie had taken place a year earlier, Number 5 might have run into The Goonies: Both movies took place in Astoria, Oregon. Robots appearing in this movie: 1, King Zarkon from Voltron; 2, Leonardo the Ninja Turtle; 3, Dr. Benton Quest; and 5, Frank The Pug.

The voice of Johnny 5 was done by Johnny 5's operator, Tim Blaney. He read the lines for Johnny 5 to help the other actors in their role, with the intent of hiring a voice actor later to overdub Tim's voice. However, they liked Tim's portrayal and kept it.

When Jen was distraught over Number 5 getting blown up, I was actually remaining quiet in person so as to not spoil the movie for the person in the screen, then realized what I'd done afterward and that she couldn't, in fact, hear me.

Short Circuit 2 was a great sequel also. I remember seeing it as a kid in the theater.

The Saturday Night Fever scene is actually a little bit of an Easter egg...both SNF and Short Circuit were directed by John Badham, who also directed Blue Thunder, WarGames, and Stakeout, all fantastic 80s movies!

I saw this movie when I was 12, my 22yo cousin took me to the cinema. He died 12 years ago. I liked him a lot but we never did much in my childhood because of ages difference. That is why seeing this movies always bring more than just nostalgia to me.

This movie is one of my childhood favorites. I love the concept of a robot gaining sentiance, develops relative free will, and seeks a new purpose of it's life.

I have been slightly obsessed with this movie since childhood (See user name and profile picture, which is a working Johnny Five head I built, running off of a microcomputer and servo controller)

The behind the scenes for practical effects is interesting, he says it's in the eye brows is what made the model so expressive

I loved this movie growing up. One of the many movies to inspire me. This movie as well as it's sequel inspired me to go to school for robotics

The Johnny Five prop used in the film was auctioned off for £287,500 in 2022. It was not a robot, but an animatronic puppet. However, during Covid lockdown Ryan Howard of Nottinghamshire UK built a fully functioning 200 kg robot. He spent £20,000 making it. Apparently it took six years to create.

Between Star Trek, Short Circuit, Small Wonder, Darryl, etc., the 1980s seemed like it really wanted to convince me that robots are people too.

Semi Fun Fact -- at the Elementary School Activity Day for fifth and sixth grade everyone got t-shirts with whatever name and number they wanted to, and _everyone_ thought I was being too boring by just putting "Johnny" as my name. But yes, my number was 5 so I was Johnny 5 :P . Oh, and PLEASE watch Part 2.

This was a heck of a movie when it came out. There were several different builds, some requiring a number of people to control at once. This movie also brought robotics to the mainstream, influencing many kids to pursue the field. It was also the Legos/Construx/Erector set generation so many motorized creations were born. It was one of the few VHS tapes I wore out as a kid.

Whaaaaat? I didn't think I'd ever see any of my favorite reactors get around this one. Totally underrated gem from the era. Wow, really looking forward to watching this one.

I had this movie on VHS as a kid. It was one of the only movies we had so I watched it like 30 times in one summer. 😂 I was obsessed with how Johnny 5 was put together and built a reasonable facsimile of him out of Lego.

That was great, you could tell the exact second when her voice changed during the “Oh No” from movie concern to real concern. There was an audible change in her tone.

Robots were very much the thing back in the early ‘80s. Most of the Johnny 5 stuff was more puppetry than actual robotics but he was inspired by things happening in the field at the time. There’s an AWESOME science fiction movie called “The Ice Pirates” that put out a call for any and all robots to populate the futuristic world of the movie and someone clearly had a lot of fun with it. The pimp robot has to be seen to be believed. 😂

"One Crazy Summer" is another must-watch 80s comedy!

This was a blast from the past, this movie came out a year before I was born! Ngl it’s kinda’ wild in retrospect seeing Bobcat Goldthwaite playing an Indian guy.😅😅😅

My favorite character in this one was Fisher Stevens as "Ben Jabituya" for all those hilarious lines in his best Indian accent. ❤🤍💙

A childhood classic of mine, even the sequel. Remember how amazed I was when Johnny 5 gets a gold coating at the end of that.

Good reaction, Jen. And yes, Robotics was pretty big in the 1980s. In fact, from 1982 the FBI headquarters had robots in the 1980s that worked in the mailroom and delivered mail throughout at least one of the floors of the FBI Hoover Building in Washington DC --- the robot was a 'Mailmobile OBR III' . It wasn't unusual to be walking the hallways, and coming across those OBR III robots going about their daily routine autonomously. (Btw, I got all of that from the reality based TV series 'The Americans' which ran from 2013 to 2018...lol. And apparently, the autonomous Mailmobile OBR III robots throughout the FBI headquarters during that 1980s era was real). Sears headquarters in Chicago, and Citigroup (then 'Citicorp') headquarters in NYC also used those robots to a certain extent. Eventually, from the early 1990s newer versions of those robots were introduced throughout the FBI field offices in other parts of the country.

You definitely need to watch number 2 “Los locos kick your ass. Los locos kick your face. Los locos kick your balls INTO OUTER SPACE!”. I never really re-watched this after seeing it as a kid, but it still blew my mind when i realised the “Indian” guy, Ben, was in fact played by Fisher Stevens, who most certainly is not Indian.

Short Circuit 2 is very much worth watching... it's terribly underrated and all but forgotten, but it's a great movie.

Hello Jen, the movie was filmed in Astoria Oregon and you kept on seeing the Astoria bridge in the movie. It's my favorite place and everyone who knows me, knows I love going there. I live in Vancouver washington, near Portland Oregon. My friend Amy, her boyfriend owns the short circuit house and turns into a bed and breakfast. Shoe roller skates a lot when she's visiting her boyfriend.

Definitely watch the sequel. An 80's movie I would recommend is Cloak & Dagger. It stars Henry Thomas who played Elliot in E.T. and Dabney Coleman. Not a well known movie but one of my favorite from the 80's

Newton Crosby's co-worker was played by Fisher Stevens. He was also in the 90's TV series "Early Edition" with Kyle Chandler (from Friday Night Lights), but played a co-worker as well. Early Edition was a show about a man (Chandler) who got tomorrow's paper...today! Nice show, and Fisher Stevens directed many of them!

Maid to Order is one of my favorite Ally Sheedy movies. It also stars Beverly D'Angelo (National Lampoons), Tom Skerrit (Top Gun), Michael Ontkean (Twin Peaks). It's just a cute movie.

I watched the heck out of this movie as a kid. The other movie I paired with this one was "Batteries Not Included"

Sometimes even now, when I pick up a can of soup, I’ll say, “a can of soup, a meal in itself”. Or just randomly yell out “STAT”.

Gutenberg and Sheedy and No. 5 = ready-made family! So adorable.

There is a animal food factory not to far from my home with the name Nova foods. So every time I pass it I say to myself "NOVA NOOOOO". This movie is living rent-free in my mind.

This movie was part of the era of cute animatronic characters that were the focus of their movies, or even the actual main characters. This includes ET, Howard the Duck, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Batteries Not Included, Mac and Me, and Garbage Pail Kids, to name a few.

This is one of a few movies i first heard the plot from my father, who saw it in the cinema and later told me the story. Saw it myself only years later :)

Part 2 is probably worth a watch. Has more fun stuff in it, and surprisingly emotional at times (at least I felt that way as a youngster!)

Criminally underrated movie in the reaction space!

Great reaction from Jen! And she was having so much fun she didn't see the old switcheroo coming. The 1980's sure had robots at different ends of the spectrum, The Terminator (1984) and Short Circuit/#5 (1986).

"scrotum" was Harris in the police academy series. The story of Johnny 5 does continue in short circuit 2, if you were interested in seeing it. a lot of people saw a similarity between Johnny 5 and WALL-E, at least in the expressive face and the tracks for movement, myself included. I'm glad you enjoyed it! it is a classic for sure.

After seeing this in the theater, I thought Short Circuit would be a bigger hit and the toy stores would be loaded with Johnny Five dolls and merch. But I guess it was not enough of a hit.

Tim Blaney, the voice and main puppeteer for Number 5, also was the main puppeteer for Max in Flight of the Navigator which came out the same year.

I'm probably one of the few who like Short Circuit 2 as much as the first one. Probably cause Johnny Five was the first robot I saw on TV as a kid that really felt like he was truly alive.
