A huge air show is currently underway in the Indian city of Bangalore. Hosted by the Defense Ministry, the five-day Aero India event is a massive spectacle aimed at closing deals and showing off the best of India`s aviation industry. The county has long been one of the world's largest importers of defense equipment. But now, it´s looking to expand exports too - with Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledging to triple annual defense exports.

The two countries India actually has signed defense export deals with are Philippines and Armenia. Unfortunately DW finds that one uninformed journalist who thinks France and Israel imports from India, when it's the other way round. Maybe he doesn't know the difference between exports and imports. India manufactures components and subsystems for some western defense industries as well. And some small personal equipment like ballistic helmets. But I don't think there's a single weapon system that France or Israel needs to buy from India.

It is not unreasonable to think that smaller or non-aligned countries will be interested. If you buy from a manufacturer that has its main customer base the NATO countries, there are probably restrictions on selling the same type of equipment and munitions and logistical support to non-Nato countries. Similar concerns about political interests could also affect Russian and Chinese exports. I can imagine that they will target countries south of the equator for some of their bigger export opportunities.

For example, Britain still hasn't launched a single satellite in space on their own without taking anyone's help. Oh btw, India also has anti-satellite weapon, which is only held by the US, Russia and China, not Britain. I don't need to mention what you can do with anti-satellite weapons. Today India has many restrictions to manufacture things that includes monetary funds, but still achieved many things which developed countries couldn't do it. @@bradentour3993 In 1991 the Indian government ended license raj & opened up most industries to foreign & domestic private competition baring so-called strategic sectors - Defence, Mining, Nuclear & Power. In Defense the biggest government monopoly is DRDO, HAL & OFB. In mining it is Coal India Ltd & Rare Earth's metals limited. In Nuclear, it is NPCIL. In Power, it is a combination of state utilities & federal utility ( Power grid). The Modi government has been slowly opening up these restricted sectors & the result is already showing.
