Being from Siliguri, I can tell you that the borders of Bangladesh and Nepal are at a distance of 37 kilometres from each other. It is indeed a sensitive area being in close proximity to multiple international borders. Hopefully, it won't come down to war.

My college is in Siliguri. And what I have seen there is that it actually act as an Illegal trans-shipment city between Nepal and Bangladesh and but there is no strict Border management. And that's what the problem is. Chinese Army would need to cross Sikkim first to reach Siliguri corridor but If any internal Regiment form then it will be a disaster. And remember , The Naxal Movement started from NaxalBari which is near Siliguri. That means Abhjit sir's plan will work only If Bangladesh , Nepal remain pro-India , not pro-China.

Here points to consider - 1 -all 3 countries around Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan are not against us if not with us , So it is not an immediate threat. 2- I have spent my childhood in North East India, and can tell It is one of the most fortified region in the entire country, this so called "Chicken neck" region have permanent military stations and dedicated army cores to protect it , and China have tried earlier to take control of this region, but India defeated them badly.World wide Indian army is considered a very experienced army specially in terms of mountain warfare.

@@crmd2011 you have a point buddy but I think ' political will ' and situations will be the biggest challenge in doing this. There will be questions like which Indian state will give up their land and will people of Bangladesh and India would be ready for the swap ,what will happen to the dislocated people, and it is not just land but we would be needing key strategic points near the border areas like hill tops, rivers and forests etc. And other point is that people in Indian sub continent are very emotionally connected to their Lands and in North East India the Indian states are themselves having border issues ,So adding a new thing in this may cause political problems on both the sides. So it's a good idea but a very riske job.

However, let there be no confusion: the Liberation War was fought by the courageous people of Bangladesh for over nine long months, enduring unimaginable suffering. The fight for our freedom was driven by the bravery of Bengal, and while India's help toward the end was crucial, it came after Bangladesh had already waged the bulk of the battle on its own. this is 1000% correct We fought our war with our blood, our people, and our sacrifices. So while we respect India's contributions, do not mistake that as the defining force in our victory. We’ve generously allowed the international narrative to include India in the title of the war, but make no mistake-the war was won by Bangladesh’s relentless struggle and determination. Now is not the time to fall into the trap of those who aim to divide us by whispering falsehoods into our ears. Such divisions only serve those who seek to exploit us. Respect your heritage, your history, and your people, but understand that Bangladesh fought its war, and we did so fiercely, long before external help arrived. but what happens is some people put black and red ants and shake it from outside and watch them fight with each other and reap the benefits by themselves. keep respect for your country alive but also keep a sharp brain. 100% we can leave without each other and we have the ability but we have to look ar the greater picture here Bangladesh needs India, and India needs Bangladesh. We are stronger together than apart. It is crucial for the people of our nations to stand united, shoulder to shoulder, against external forces that wish to see us divided. Let’s focus on building a brighter future together and not let outside influences sow discord between us. Bangladesh Zindabad

A few takes on India's friendship: 1. India wants corridors to its northeast part through Bangladesh but rejects Bhutan and Nepal to provide a corridor to Bangladesh through 'Chicken Neck' and expects them to be friendly in the Indo-China conflicts around that area. 2. The hundreds of dead bodies of Bangladeshis in the India-Bangladesh border make it the deadliest border in the world. Even though infiltration happens from both sides. 3. India built barrages and dams on 57 shared rivers with Bangladesh, which causes excessive dryness in summer and winter and devastating floods in monsoon. India wants all the eases and interests in its favor and bars all possibilities of opportunity for the neighboring countries. So how can India expect friendliness from us? India's biggest enemy is its political and bureaucratic policies for Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal. Even citizens of India are not spared from the looting and torturing of India's bureaucrats and politicians. Finally, advice for Indians, know your real enemies. They feed on your ignorance and fear.

What if Bangladesh and Nepal become pro Chinese with time? We should also consider the increasing Chinese influence on these countries and what if Bangladesh consider the Indian usage of northern Bangladesh territory even for logistic purpose as an adverse action? We can't afford Bangladesh as and adversary because in such case India in all 3 northern boundaries will only have enemies. I think during Bangladesh liberation war if we have taken parts of Bangladesh into India then that would have risen hatred towards India, as we ware also not in a good position back then in 1972 it was a good opinion to leave all the Bangladeshi territories for themselves.

Solutions to the Chicken Neck Vulnerability 1. Rail transit through Bangladesh 2. Black top road to Doka La 3. Underground roads and railroads through the Chicken Neck 1. After a proposal from Indian Railways (IR), Dhaka and New Delhi have agreed to work out the details of the possibility of India using rail transit through Bangladesh. Under the plan, Indian trains will run between Sealdah and Haldibari of West Bengal through Bangladesh. In that case, trains will enter Bangladesh through Gede-Darshana (Chuadanga) border and exit through Chilahati (Nilphamari)-Haldibari border to reach Siliguri. At the moment, Bharat has road transit facilities through Bangladesh. If approved by the two governments, the proposed route will be the first rail transit facility between the two nations after more than half a century. The proposed transit facility will reduce the travel time by nearly three hours. At the moment Bharati trains need to travel 573km to reach Siliguri from Sealdah in Kolkata. It will come down to just 200kms if it can travel through the new route. Both Bharat and Bangladesh are expected to be connected through railways in Agartala (Tripura) - Akhaura (Bangladesh) route in the next 4-5 months, Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) divisional manager JS Lakra said on Tuesday. “The international railway connectivity project through Agartala-Akhaura is under progress and is expected to be over by few months,” the official told reporters in Agartala. With this launch, the travel time in Agartala-Kolkata route via Dhaka will be reduced to 10 hours from 31 hours. The second option is to strengthen connectivity to the tri-junction area at Doka La so that our response is augmented. The mule track to Doka La into a black-top road by the Border Road Organisation and reducing the travel time from 7 hours to 40 minutes is a step in the right direction. In addition a bridge was constructed on strategically important “Flag Hill-Dokala” road in Sikkim at an altitude of 11,000 feet under Project Swastik of BRO. The state-of-art indigenous bridge was dedicated to the nation by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on December 28, 2021.That means two routes to this vital area. The third option is to make alternate transport arrangements which are safe and secure. The development of a multi-modal transport corridor through Siliguri itself can be undertaken. As part of this initiative we can even build underground road tunnels which are less likely to be susceptible to air and artillery attack in a time of a military conflict. Underground tunnelling through this vulnerable stretch, although costly, can give a little more room to take harder militarily options. Underground expressways and high speed rail connectivity through this corridor will also help to scale up the movement of civil and military traffic. This would also enhance trade and tourism of the NE region. In 5 months, because of the railroad through Bangladesh opening, the Chicken Neck becomes a dagger aimed at Uncle Xi's neck! The roads through Sikkim which are usable by vehicles further improves logistics. The last necessary step to render the Chicken neck into a pata at Uncle Xi's neck is underground tunnels/roads. They are much harder to destroy if underground and permit hidden movement that can't be tracked by satellites/drones.However, even before all that, the Chicken neck is actually really hard for the PLA to attack. Bharat has the advantage of the heights, numbers, and logistics. If so, a Zhongguo breakthrough here is highly unlikely. But assuming that the PLA does get past our defences, a thrust from Doklam or from the trijunction of Bhutan, China and India will have to traverse 100-130 km of Indian territory, with Indian forces all round. Note that the PLA will have to negotiate winding Indian roads on which there is no place to hide. It cannot get its men and equipment off the road, and Indian long-range artillery, rockets, drones and attack aircraft will pick them off in a “turkey shoot”. Ukraine did really well against Rossiya exploiting the fact that their tanks couldn't get off the roads and were very vulnerable. If the PLA gets to flatter land, it will be able to fan out. However, by the time it does this, Indian forces from both flanks will have massed. The Chinese may even be vulnerable in their rear, with the Indian army harrowing them from behind. Again, long-range artillery, rockets, drones and aircraft will decimate the enemy. Assuming that nevertheless Chinese forces make it to flatter ground and try to consolidate their positions, they will face an enormous logistical problem. Their supplies will have to come all the way from Tibet. As a result, their logistics will be horribly exposed to Indian interdiction. The PLA forces in the Chicken’s Neck area will gradually be starved of supplies and will be destroyed or captured. Another possibility is that the Chinese would try to take and hold this area with special forces that are parachuted behind Indian lines.Their ability to hold ground against regular military forces and expand their operations is extremely limited. Because regular army has tanks and artillery special forces cannot win. This is the truth. It is not clear why our analysts, including unnamed or retired military analysts, continue to propagate the myth that the Chicken’s Neck is vulnerable, but it does us no good to repeat this myth. Certainly, the PLA knows that a thrust here would be suicidal. By building underground tunnels, the chicken's neck becomes a pata at Uncle Xi's neck. No weakness but a strength.

@@groundzero9184 Bangladesh is going to start exporting goods to India by train for the first time in what is billed by many as a major boost to cross-border trade. So Chicken neck is already less vulnerable. Possible to get goods through Bangladesh. Geographically, mainland Bharat is separated from its northeastern states by Bangladesh and is only connected via a narrow 4-kilometer corridor(Chicken Neck). India’s primary interest is to efficiently connect its northeast with the main hinterland by using the BD waterways. Poor navigability, however, stands in the way. I think by one way or another, through Bangladesh Myanmar Bhutan Nepal and Sikkim the chicken neck can be reinforced.

There is a better solution to this. We can heavily bolster the north-eastern region with military, infrastructure, logistics and weapons so that in case even if it is cut off from the mainland India, we have more than enough capability from that region to attack the enemy from that region and of-course our soldiers will also attack from the mainland India so those enemy soldiers will be sitting ducks facing a two way attack in the middle and btw this is called a pincer attack.

Its time that Bangladesh Defense Forces must be alert in all sides all the time. Its time that Bangladesh Army Navy, Air-force should be ready 24/7 to thwart any attempt from outside. The kind of rhetoric we have been hearing from a neighboring country should be scrutinized seriously. Bangladesh Army must position its missiles at every KPI , Navy must be alert with their warships and submarines , Airforce must be patrolling the sky 24/7 . There is no reason to underestimate the military capability of Bangladesh. The geographical area is not any scale to measure the military capability of any country. Army must be ready along all front lines in full combat gear . There is no time for complacency when the country’s independence and sovereignty is undermined by aggressive rhetoric’s from any country . Bangladesh does not want any military conflict with any country but when any military conflict is imposed on Bangladesh , there will not be minutes wasted to retaliate in full. All internal intelligence agencies must be vigilant at every corners of the country. Its very important for the defense to create a new intelligence wing of the students. Students have shown their determination and patriotism in Bangladesh. Therefore all external and internal evil forces are warned about their attempt to destabilize the country.

India and Nepal are united not just by food, culture or traditions but by the religion too ! Yes there have been some problems in recent years but those are political only ! People to people connection are always so close and in harmony !!

"You can simply take over Northern Bangladesh"? LOL. What a stupid way to simplify a complex situation. No Mr. Chavda, you can't simply take over a territory of an independent nation without any provocation from the opposite side. That's not how geopolitics work. And no, not everything is allowed in war. If that so, then Pakistan's each and every attack on Indian territory since 1947 should be considered 100% justified. Not everything can be claimed by military force. This is not a joke. If you think you can simply take over Bangladesh without any resistance from the Bangladesh Army, I must say you have zero sense of geopolitics in this manner.

In this situation I think Bangladesh is the main option. But Bangladesh is slowly facing towards China. It is a great diplomatic failure of India. India should not support dictator Hasina one sidedly. The one sided supports of India for dictator Hasina made the situation worst regarding India-Bangladesh relationship. Still there is scope of turning Bangladesh towards India diplomatically. Indian government should co-operate with the current government of Bangladesh. Indian direct influence on the internal matters of Bangladesh must be stopped. And also media should stop spreading rumors. Otherwise these will only raise hatred among both country's people.

As a Bangladeshi, I'll tell you what you need to do instead of shameless imperialism which you suggested: Give Bangladesh free access to trade and travel to Nepal, Bhutan, China via Siliguri. Bangladesh will happily let you pass traders through its territory via a "dedicated road" in North Bengal. Of course some border protections will be maintained, but would be minimal, similar to Schenegen System in Europe. Do remember, India lost Aksai Chin and other territories to China before. If India aggresses against Bangladesh (who wants to remain friendly but neutral), Nepal, China, Bangladesh can easily overrun Siliguri in war (note that those areas also have significant non-Hindu populations, and North-east India has MANY pro-independence paramilitaries, who will side AGAINST India), and India will effectively not only lose North-east India, it will lose one of its only few allies in the region as well, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and then, both West and East will become India's enemy. So you are WRONG. India's best and only option is diplomacy. Allow Bangladesh to trade through your borders via Siliguri Corridor, Bangladesh will allow you to pass to North-east India, via let's call it "Rangpur Corridor"

I have a different suggestion, I think we can just makes our forces in Northeast capable of defending themselves (like giving them double or triple the supplies then they need) even when they are not able to connect to mainland. We can also use porcupine strategy to delay the Chinese forces from entering the northeast India and then we can send supply them with weapons and food from the sea and that way we can defend even if the Mainland is not connected with northeast. We should not forget Russia vs Ukraine war. It's not very easy to capture the land of even a small country.

Abhijit jee, sorry, your view appears Indo-hegemonic nationalist, and grossly miscued. No, Nepal would never agree Indian military presence even on one inch of its soil. Sadly, just like your politicians, due to incompetence of our politicians, both Beijing and Delhi run political stunts/meddling in Kathmandu once in a while. That does not mean India can set up a war theatre in our soil. We have ageless socio-cultural ties with both countries, much more so with India, and we have porus border. But did you not see in last border conflict when it comes sovergienty, all political parties have one voice, and all Nepalese have one act? Nepal already committed the mistake one time giving permission to Indian army to base in the past. Nepal learned it's lesson. It's not the country of 1960s, and our sovergeinty is not any less precious than yours, or any other country's for that matter. Nepal's foreign policy doctrine is clear as daylight: An equi-distance with India and China. Why does India abstain from voting in UN when it comes to picking side with Russia VS USA even when it knows which the right side is? It is looking for its own interest. It's the same position for us. I do not think Bangladesh would want Indian military presence either. Any mis-adventure of coertion by India on Bangladesh or Nepal could easily lead to these countries joining China in the armed conflict. India then could be fighting war with multiple countries on many sides. How could you not see that possibility? And you already have this perrenial semi-war theatre with Pakistan. If you are really looking for solution, a more appropriate solution could be some land-swap deals in peace time with Bangladesh or Nepal or both.

Most of the people of North of Bengal are basically native peoples like Gorkha, Koch Rajbongshi & tribal people and they are majority of population and are always neglected financially & politically and there is a constant threat of chicken nech I'm seeing this as a threat because the government is not paying the attention which needed to be paid from the independence they are sincerely neglecting the northern part specially the state government and for that reason constant illegal immigration is happening which is causing demographic change and in a democracy like India it's not safe for the security and the nature also for that reason most of the people who are from North of Bengal (approx 70-80%) want and it's practical for the economic and for the well being of the people and will be best for the security of region to make a new state with vast area which can be a union territory.
