Imagine streets with no dustbins. Imagine a place where everybody litters wherever they want. Against this chaotic backdrop, India has the highest recycling levels in the world.
India's 'informal recycling' industry has become an important business sector in its own right. Ramshackle sacks of general scrap are piled up in every corner while a group of women busily sort plastic by type and colour. Most of their income is earned laboriously salvaging any recyclables they can sell on. Despite the benefits of recycling, prejudices against 'informal-pickers' are yet to be overcome. But very few places in the world have organised as sophisticated and successful a network of 'recycling cooperatives'. They keep the place clean and provide employment for the poorest.

Lol i am from Trivandrum ( the city in which this film was shot) and although the video was uploaded in the year 2016, that factory which they talk about at last was shut down in the year 2011 due to excessive pollutants from the leachate in the water resources around the factory. The interesting thing to note is that the manure that they produced in the factory was never bought by the farmers due to high levels of plastic in it. That factory was never an example for perfect recycling, all they ever did was to dump all of the waste from the city in a village and process everything into manure and use the rest in land fill. And the factory worked without license for nearly 10 years from 2001. We now urge the people to process degradable waste at the source level itself. Non degradables are collected and send to shredding and recycling units around the city. I would say that this system is more efficient.

It's a shame you can't make it work. It does do a lot of good when the process works correctly Read my comment. What is needed is education so that people understand how the recycling works. When the waste and pollution diminishes, the people will say:"Ah, THIS is why we needed to do it!"

The collector can get more money by separating the three types of plastic the bottle is made of 1) PET the bottle its self 2) HDPE the cap and the cap ring 3 ) LDPE the thin film label She will also get more cash for the PET bottle with the other two parts removed. The Cap and label must be stored until she has many KG , to get a better price. The HDPE can also be DIT used to make thing, It works just like wood. Just search DIY HDPE

If plastics can recirculate.then let's help our environments
@djdom1uk
@djdom1uk 7 лет назад
In the UK, the number of 'disposable' (single-use) plastic carrier bags has fallen by a massive amount, since the Government has imposed a £0.05 charge for customers in most supermarkets. All major supermarkets sell reusable 'bags for life' plastic bags which are not only bigger, but use thicker plastic - so they can be used again, and again, and again. The only problem with these bags is cross-contamination with uncooked/cooked meat, which can be resolved by washing out any bags that have been used to contain uncooked meat (even if wrapped in plastic) before using them again. Solution: Either ban 'single-use' plastic carrier bags, and encourage people to use reusable bags - or make people pay for them! People do not care about throwing away things they have not paid for, so if you make them pay even a small amount they will think twice about throwing them away ;0)
@gurtek08
@gurtek08 6 лет назад
Hercules75 actually this role has been imposed in Canada and let me tell you this not one single person that I see in the supermarket bring their own bag and instead now we keep on giving money to the corporations. This is a joke as a five cent for most people is nothing. I too am guilty and have never kept one of those grocery bags in my car. However I find that they need to increase the price significantly to make a difference to the environment. I don't really care about 5 cents and I guarantee not alot of other people do either as most often people usually have about minimum 5 to 8 bags. So it only cost them a quarter or more which is a joke, as this prevents nothing. I also found that alot of the new stores don't have cardboard boxes like they use to in the 90s as I remember I would just take a cardboard box and put my grocery their even to bags were free. It was more convenient to carry,especially if you live in an apartment.

Big miss understanding, used plastic bottles are rarely turned into new plastic bottles. This is because they are made out of different layers of different plastics which makes recycling way harder than you think. It is also way cheaper to produce new plastic bottles instead of making new ones from old ones. Thus the plastic pollution continues. The caps of the bottles however are 100% recyclable and can be molten into new things.

India population and complicated culture are factors holding the country back to catch up with China level of development. As a number 6 position in the world GDP scale,India by now suppose to provide clean environment to it poor masses. Unlike India, China made bold decision by starting a fresh through demolition of all dilapidated houses and shantise across the major cities and towns. Today china can confidently compare their cities and towns with any of the major cities and town in europe and america. This is what India must do to provide clean environment to it poor masses and justify it position as number 6 GDP in the world.

It's a shame India hasn't understood the good of biogas- plants. With a mainly vegetarian population, she could build one biogas-plant in each latitude (N, S, W, E) around each mega city, transport the bio waste a short distance, make biogas and fertializer for the farmers, fuel up all the cars and buses in each city w biogas (CO2-neutral). This takes care of the waste, the gasoline problem, the CO2 problem, the rodent problem, the air pollution, brings jobs and thus improves the health in each city. Only wins on this one. It works very well here: we produce biogas = 11 M liters of gasoline EVERY YEAR where I live. All community cars and buses are run on biogas. In total we collect 400 000 tons of bio waste, return 375 000 tons of fertilizers to the farmers, produce 370,3 Gwh of electricity and reduce CO2 emission w 97 000 tons/year in 6 biogas plants nationwide (10 M inhabitants)(2019).
@retroman5383

We have biogas plants in almost every city, we call it Bio-CNG plants. Almost every taxi (auto rickshaw) in India runs on Bio-CNG (Bio Natural Gas). We generally produce Biogas from Cow dung which is readily available here. A biogas (Bio-CNG) taxi can be differentiated from petrol taxi by their color. A biogas taxi would be painted Green and Yellow instead of Black and Yellow used for petrol ones

They can bargain with the residents on how much to charge to collect their garbage and this way government stays out of it. It goes to show that private initiative is always the best and cheapest. The recycling process does release more wastes and by-products that once again really really need recycling.

are the recylabled materials re used or just dumped as they are here , ?
@PalakJain15
@PalakJain15 4 года назад
The plastic is melted and turned into plastic balls (PET balls) which is a lower grade of plastic. This is in turn used to make low quality plastic products like dustbins, buckets, plastic bags etc.

Shaikh Mullah-ud-Din brother it's not a personal mobility, it is for goods transport, it's what we call similar to a "kutty yanai" or small elephant and this one is ¾ its size, hence ~250 INR is the normal charge.
