I got caught in the middle of the Indian/Pakistan conflict in Kashmir back in 99 as a photojournalist covering the war in Kargil. You just can't imagine how insane the territory is; cliff-face warfare, Billy goats w/guns I kid you not. This was when they were pointing nukes at each other, although they still are, but this was bad. I've covered a few conflicts & none of them were as implausible as that war. They'd be firing at each other from mountaintop to mountaintop & entire mountainsides would be blown out from beneath them. It was horrific as all war is, but fighting in territory like that is unlike anything I've ever witnessed or even seen portrayed on film tbh.
That wasn't even the worst war India and Pakistan have fought. In fact many people don't even call it a war, for many, it was a few months-long skirmish in which Pakistanis disguised as terrorists occupied Indian territory but were removed.
Indian troops had to climb 75 to 80 degrees near vertical climbs to recapture the territories that Pakistanis occupied during the winters when Indian troops had emptied the bunkers on mountain tops and had come down.
Jeigh Neither India asked USA to give access to GPS so we can see locations of Pakistani army on mountains US declined, that is why it got messy. Because Pakistan wanted to control that territory and cutoff rest of the india from Kashmir, so they send their soldiers to capture that heights which were always abandoned due to extreme winters. So all this happened Pakistan started war but US like always supported military dictators in Pakistan, denied india any help so war get prolonged and messy

Back in the 90's I read an excerpt of a CIA assessment about a possible war breaking out between China and India in the year 2025. The theory was that this war would be based on the water table. Whoever made this assessment wasn't too far off the mark.
In truth, water is far more valuable than gold, silver, or billions of dollars. If you were in a desert dying of thirst, you would do anything for water. Water is the live blood of all economics. Look at Chinas crops right now in 2023. They are going to have a 90% reduction in crop yields because of no water, then flooding then the equipment being held up at checkpoints with big fines. At this rate China will have to import food or face a mass starvation of 600 million people.

Pretty sure China never built a road into Bhutan's territory. Looking at a map from Google at the region, one can clearly see that Chinese construction of the road never went past their border, never undermining their sovereignty. In fact, India instead intruded onto Chinese land with bulldozers and machines to stop Chinese construction.
When discussing casualties at the border, it is crucial to recognize a significant distinction. India consistently upholds a commendable level of transparency and honesty in providing information to its people. Conversely, the PLA does not share the same obligation and often manipulates casualty figures. Another notable aspect to emphasize is the disparity in preparedness between the two nations. India's long-standing engagement in low-intensity counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations along its borders has resulted in a highly trained and battle-hardened military. In contrast, the PLA relies primarily on numerical superiority and has demonstrated weaknesses in mountainous terrains.
You obviously aren't honest when you cry in fear about China more than India despite your figures, and no one cares about your many little insurgencies you're too weak to win easily against. The PLA is operating in more mountainous terrains.
Chris: A very informative video. In 17 minutes I understood the India-China border much better. I did not know about that 1914 Summit Meeting or the role that Tibet played and plays today. However, you say: "... in response to Chinese build up in 2021 India shifted 50,000 additional troops to their border with China to reinforce the region. They did this by taking 20,000 troops and 6 army divisions off their western border with rival Pakistan to prioritize defense against China instead." I am not a Military Expert, but I would think that India, with its 1.4 + Billion people, would have enough troops to cover BOTH its borders with Pakistan and China.
valid point, but it is easier to send re-enforcement from closer areas, especially since the enemy on that side of the border is failing on it it's own, their government or the lack of it (since the past two years now ) is weakened, they have other bigger problems to solve than border disputes.. also here are some points if you want to know more : 1) that the Chinese army is conscripts, most of whom did not want to join the army, especially not for a "far off" and "cold and brutal" territory, the economic gains of which are for the CCP leadership.. where as in India it is a volunteer army, the soldiers and officers are real soldiers who are not only battle hardened but also very passionate and patriotic about what they are doing. 2) The US intel to India is a little difficult to buy since historically the USA has supplied info, weapons and airplanes to India's enemy state - Pakistan. and also tried it's best to make sure India does not develop nuclear weapons. several reports suggested that the CIA was involved in the deaths of quite a few Indian scientists. 3) always remember, anywhere in the world especially in Asia and Africa, if you see trouble at the border between two countries you can safely assume the British have a hand in it, and if it is inside the country it is safe to assume the Americans have a part to play. This applies to Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Taiwan, China, India, Pakistan, Vietnam, the two Koreas, Afghanistan and most of the disputes in the middle east and Africa. If the Wall Street and the London Stock Exchange disappeared somehow I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of these conflicts died out within a few decades of that event too...

For most of history, India and China did not share a border. There were "buffer" states between them, especially Tibet. And parts of Tibet were ruled or controlled by Indian empires for centuries, especially the western parts. Indians freely traveled to near the headwaters of Indus and Brahmaputra, at Mount Kailash and Mansarovar because they are holy to Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains. Buddhists call it Mount Meru. Lots of cultural ties. But these were with Tibetans, not so much the Han Chinese. All this changed only after the Communist China attacked and conquered Tibet. India had police forces helping Tibetan government but Nehru backed down like a lap dog and stayed silent while Mao gobbled up Tibet, hoping it would end there. Of course it did not end there, for Mao soon took over Aksai Chin, the far eastern plateau portion of Ladakh region of Kashmir. And it still controls it, and has been salami-slicing further west into Indian Ladakh at every opportunity. The clashes happened there 3 years ago because India under Modi finally built a motorable road all the way to the northern sector for its military forces; this road run parallel to the LAC and passes barely a couple of miles from it...The Chinese thought they could simply salami-slice right through it, but were confronted and rejected. And so now the tense situation holds. China would love to take more territory and push India east of the Shyok and Nubra rivers, and threaten India's hold over the Siachin glacier, a sore thumb for China's friend Pakistan.
Well that is just false before communist china invaded tibet was under control of qing. I don't know if India controlled those territory before but i know mongols or yuan empire also has full control over tiber. So saying Communist China first invaded is false
It's more complicated than that. There never was a truly unified Tibet after the 800s, and if there was a Tibetan nation, it consisted mainly of a loose confederation of fortified monasteries in the Himalayas. Yes, some Tibetans chose to form a unified nation of their own under the Dalai Lama in the 20th century, but there were also others who instead sided with KMT China (and much later, CCP) who did not recognise nor entertain the idea of the Dalai Lama as their leader. The parallels between Tibet and, say Ukraine in the 1600s, Germany in the 1700s and Checnya and the Caucasus in the 1800s and 1900s cannot be ignored.
Lol, yes it was peaceful throughout centuries of the "India Empire." It seems you only blame the British for all your problems but never for territory taken from others under their rule.

China hardly moved from the same territory in a thousand years. I would hardly call that imperialism. Edit: I stand corrected, the Chinese have hardly moved for 1400 years not just 1000 as I previously stated. Since 600 A.D. the Han Chinese have not been interested in conquering or colonizing anyone, they were peaceful, sedentary, agricultural people who despised nomads who roamed the world conquering and plundering nations (the British and the US in modern times?). The process of expansion of Han Chinese was finished by the time of Tang Dynasty (618-906) leading to the Golden Age of Ancient China. The period was one of the most peaceful and prosperous of Chinese history. If you look the map of Tang dynasty you will see that it looks pretty much like present day China excluding Tibet, Manchuria, Inner Mongolia, and Taiwan. Yes the CCP is the problem. The Chinese communists wrecked china and are a bully for the entire region. Western powers should thoroughly support india and others against common problem that is China
India invaded Bhutan. India has border conflicts with all surrounding countries. Indians are really cheap. British should colonize India again and educate India
Would be great to get more videos covering the countries in the region, their local military developments, history, etc. India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh especially given their extremely varied arsenals.
It would be enlightening too to focus further on Water resources. Never mind "Probably not going to be wars over water" The facts wars over clean water are looking ever more inevitable in multiple regions............. and *sure as sure is sure, open conflict between Pakistan & China with India IS going to break out once China starts wrok in earnest on damning the rivers in Tibet which supply India*
Look for books by byron farwell. He covers the British rule of india in great depth and entertainment. A master of the subject. Has a book on the Gurkhas from Nepal as well. You won't be disappointed.
😅 doesn't it sound strange that Pakistani terrorist organisation attacking chinese who are investing in their country, why simply don't say that Indian sponsored terrorist organisations are doing that by the way it must also be noted that Pakistan arrested Indian navy commander (in army ranks equivalent to the rank of colonel) Kalbhushan Jadhav who was sponsoring the terrorist activities in Pakistan
This video commit a gigantic error. India obtains 97 % of its water from monsoon rainfalls. The few river that does flow out of Tibet like the Brahmaputra, frequently floods during the winter. Without the Chinese dam on the Tsangpo/Brahmaputra river, India would suffer widespread flooding.
To say "well done" would be an understatement. And the last line was pretty funny. It would be interesting to delve into one or two of the "sticks and stones" clashes, it's pretty wild.
True that. Part of the reason why the Indian Army is so infantry heavy. For example, it has 400 Light Infantry Battalions compared to just 75 Armoured Regiments (Tank Battalions) and 50 Mechanized Infantry Battalions. Infantry and Artillery are bread and butter of Mountain Warfare.
I agree. Only thing I can think of is that it’s like the old Five Mafia Families that used to control New York City. As long as everyone was making money, it was fine. But if one got too Greedy or a Family Leader became too Weak…
Russia doesn't want china and India to be enemies. So it wants both the countries to be united. But china is very provocative so India is more and more getting close to US and regularly conducts military excercise with US in the Himalayan region
The Mallacca Straight is a huge bottleneck for the Chinese but having ports in Southern Pakistan would not be much better. A few Awell placed Subs could launch cruise missiles from safety that would decimate the oil receiving facilities in Pakistan and the Straights would once again be the only option for China. I wonder how much Pakistan knows it is being used by China?
Yeah but that would spark a war with Pakistan too, and an attack on their shipping ports might be cause to go nuclear. I don't think the US would take that risk.
@@andrewstevens9481 Very True, Andrew but, if Pakistan allowed oil to flow after receiving warnings from the US and its Allies, they would in effect be Allied to China and fair game in a war. If they want to be neutral, they would need to stop the flow. As far as nukes go, Pakistan would have much more to lose than the US. ☺
As little Faith as I have in America and doing the right thing, I somehow Don't see them attacking facilities full of Civilians, thats more Russian playbook. War still has rules.
"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." -Albert Einstein "You sure about that?" -China and India
There's a flaw in the reasoning here: China's interest in building a road from Gwadar up to China can't be to move oil. You just can't move significant amounts of crude oil by truck. Also, there are no refineries in the remote west of China.
It's not only for oil, the producer of this video has many mistakes here. Also China is looking to industrialise and colonise its Western region rapidly.
Think Pipelines..and CPEC is not just a port with road or rail connectivity...there are industrial complexes and power plants...all for China's benefit.
From what I've read its a mega project for Pakistan to yes help china get a way to avoid melacca and American allies waters, and get products into Africa, Europe and middle east as well as have a secondary route for oil. This project also gives china the ability to armtwiat Pakistan, as the project is heavily Chinese influenced, with very low numbers of actual Pakistani businesses getting work or projects. Pakistan is already in financial crisis. I have no clue how they'll pay it off to the Chinese, who aren't as forgiving. So they'll have to sell land, which they already have if I remember correctly. And so china will have technically sovereign territory in Pakistan for whatever use.
@@unmaithamizhan6594 I am not so sure the Chinese would build a pipeline due to Pakistan’s political instability and to the resulting existence of significant terrorist groups inside of Pakistan nowadays , and probably in the future since Pakistan’s political instability seems like a problem that will not go away
Tibet was a de facto independent state from 1912 to 1951, but it was never recognized as an independent country by the international community. So Tibet was not an independent country.
The BRICS currency is an alternate option; not going to replace the dollar. This is what people and journalists don't understand. Euro exists, Sterling exists, so will BRICS currency.
@@utkarshg.bharti9714 The question then becomes why on Earth would India invest in a hypothetical shared currency with China when it's own currency is plummeting against the dollar and is desperate for more investment?
Clarification as I think it is important to acknowledge that India never strikes first in battle against China or Pakistan and has only ever retaliated.
@@garyfoster3237 It'll only stop if/when our leaders grow a spine. The Indian military fights with one arm tied behind its back due to political interference. You pronounced those rivers perfectly bro! I guess all those proverbs were originally meant for Pakistan. Pakistan is that person who dumped their boyfriend and got jealous when that boyfriend got married so she's in live in relationships with the USA and China.
You should also calculate the number of trucks needed to transport oil from Gwadar to China v/s ocean oil tanker. And the terrain. These regions are 6k feet high and oil transport is not economically viable via road. The project is a white elephant

As always, very well researched videos. Kuddos man. Just one thing, 11:34. This number is claimed by China and according to many sources from Australia, USA, even Russia claimed that atleast 30-40 of China's soldiers were killed in the brawl. Beijing's soldiers are inferior compared to Indian soldiers when it comes to training and operating in high altitude regions. That also explains their claim of just 4 dead soldiers when it's more than 30 to keep the morale of the remaining soldiers up.
I remember that sticks and stones fight. It was reported here in Mexico that 24 troops in all were killed. But we know, we deal with it here all the time, they lie all the time even here in Mexico about how many people are being kidnapped and murdered on the 57 highway next to me, that runs from Monterrey to Mexico City. 500 people per week are kidnapped, and about 475 of those are murdered. But the media reports that 50 per week are being kidnapped, and all of them are supposedly being recovered. Not true at all. The real numbers are ALWAYS different than the reported numbers, ESPECIALLY with media "research." Boots on the ground research is what we need.

The "Road" can be blocked easily but the "Belt" is a different matter, the influence of the US (which is aerospace and naval power, not continental power) in Central Asia and Russia is minimal. China can definitely survive the blockade without serious consequences..
Food and fuel will still flow, but not nearly as cheaply as when imported by sea straight to the cities along the seas and navigable rivers. Mainland China is likely to still starve because of how unaffordable these vital resources will get when sent overland through the far end of the country instead.
