In about four years, the first complement of MQ-9B Predator drones will join the Indian armed forces. They are expected to fill a key gap in the ability to ensure sustained surveillance over vast stretches of India's extended neighbourhood, whether land, air or ocean.
Thirty one drones are being acquired from the US firm General Atomics, 15 going to the navy and the rest being shared between the army and air force.
This is a major technology acquisition. India's current drone fleet comprises smaller aircraft with limited endurance and even limited range. Home grown efforts are yet to bear fruit. But the challenges mushrooming along India's frontiers needed something that would enable sustained surveillance, intelligence collection, tracking, identification and where necessary, elimination. The Predator ticks all the boxes
While the drones don't come cheap, they are expected to have a huge impact on logistics, helping the forces prioritise deployment of other assets, and bring down costs.
