India lost to Australia in semifinals the Final was played between Pakistan n Australia in Maxico olympics 1968. There was no match between Pakistan n India in that olympics.

These were top teams of their day but the video clearly shows what a shambles the game was then. Imagine what it was like at lower levels. Note the 3 man offside rule, changed later to 2 man and then done away with altogether. The dreadful obstruction rule also done away with and the modern game on artificial pitches make fieldhockey nowadays a great team sport with highest spectator value.

But the charm has been taken away from hockey since removal of offside rule. Stars are missing from modern day hockey due to randomness and lack of emphasis on individual skill. Hockey was the closest thing to football and imagine football without offside ! Europeans could not cope with Asian stickwork and decide to tweak rules in their favour thus ruining the game forever.

@@jav4444 This. They didn't like the fact that bunch of browns are winning every other tournament. Asian stick work was unmatchable so they changed the rules altogether that penalized dribbling. Bring back the offside rule and you will see India and Pakistan winning everything again. And also I doubt @Antonnick assertion that game has gained popularity. Without stars, no game can generate growing audience.
