'India Walked Away From Tibet, Not Looking Back'

NEW DELHI: Sixty years of China's occupation has not diminished the Tibetan desire for freedom, says renowned author and scholar on Tibet affairs Claude Arpi. In a skype chat with StratNews Global's Surya Gangadharan on Books Corner, Arpi talked about thte fourth volume of his Tibet series titled The End of An Era: India Exits Tibet. It covers the crucial period from 1947 to 1962, when China forced the closure of India's consulate in Lhasa and the trade agencies in Yatung, Gyatse and Gartok. It ended the centuries old relationship between Tibet and India, putting an end to bonding that enriched the two peoples.
Why India complied to the Chinese demand without any resistance is not clear. It appears the Indian leadership at that time saw no purpose in resisting although there were voices to the contrary, some even advocating a strong Indian response in areas like the Chumbi Valley, to counter China's moves. But to no avail. The political leadership would have have nothing to do with it. So India walked away from Tibet without a backward glance.
In the current standoff with China in eastern Ladakh, Arpi believes India is finally showing spine and a refusal to tolerate any more "incremental nibbling" by Beijing. How this will end is hard to say. Arpi notes that coercion is China's way and it may prefer to avoid armed conflict. But China may have lost face in this standoff, more to the point, Xi Jinping may have, with unpredictable consequences for the future.

India didn't walk away from Tibet but Nawab Nehru walked away. Those days Nehru acted as Nawab of India considered india as his kingdom of his father handed to him by M K Gandhi. He had all habits of Nawabs of pre independence era and was busy in those activities, hence had little time to look to national interests like J&K,ceding 35-50% of it to Pakistan, approaching UN unilaterally after ordering ceasefire despite resistance from Indian Army.Ceding 38000 square kilometres in Ladakh to china and not objecting to china annexation of Tibet.Nawab Nehru committed blunders India is paying dearly till date and how long we and our future generations will continue to pay only God knows.MKGandhi too has his share in this suffering of Indians by allowing Muslims to stay back in India despite giving these snakes separate country as per their demands. Both Nawab Nehru and MK Gandhi are architects of this position india is in

Afer WW2, it was Nehru & Mao who destroyed two great nations. Mao raised nationalism using the "Century of Humiliation" slogan and created loyal red army. The human wave attack has sacrificed the lives of millions of its youth in Korean war. The same wave attack failed miserably with Vietnam in 1979. In 1950, the first priority of Nehru was Korean war. Nehru acted as the mentor of Mao, justifying Tibetan aggression within India, in the congress party and at International stages exitdragon.blogspot.com

India created by British colonist les than 200 years ago and believed itself should inherit all the colonies that British occupied and draw on the map. If Indian really care about ppl live along the Himalayas, then India should let Kashmir independent as buffer zone rather than invaded Skim causing more conflicts.

Stratnews Global how do you manage to make such a gem of a show! I mean you have access to such scholarly experts who astonish us with their wisdom. Here is Mr Claude Arpi who is not an Indian & doesn't have to be biased towards India. Even so he exposes the duplicity of China while being blunt about Indias errors in Tibet policy. Mr Arpi has shared with us wealth of knowledge & history being neutral. He has shared insights which hardly any of us knew before. Clearly he lays out our failure in upholding our traditional relationship with Tibet. Begining rightly with the romantic notions of pacifism against a nation who asks what is nonviolence! It is saddening to know the facts about the colossal loss independent relations with Tibet. The ever expansionist CCP China will loose one day & democracy would be established.

Carry On /. In 1949 when People’s Republic of China’s was born, India was more rich and developed than China. Look at you now, China has a GDP 5 times bigger than India and has almost eradicated poverty in the country. China has an impressive 35.000 km of bullets trains, the biggest port and airports in the world. 160 millions people visit China every year and 140 millions Chinese travel abroad every year. China has it own GPS system called Beidou and countless technical and social advances. China was the first to be decimated by the coronavirus, but in less than two month could control it and resume its normal life. All that proves that other, than the multiparty systems, works and in fact are much more adapted to the traditions of the country and produce better results. Are you sure that the western “democracy “, which is not other than the “western hypocrisy”, is the best for India?

@@navegantezen5983 I congratulate the progress & development of China. Indeed Democracratic nation is a happier place than autocratic systems. I have read about communist system of functioning. I had realised one thing, even a poor or corrupt or underdeveloped Democratic Nation is far better place to live freely. We are happy, express our views openly, free to pray to our God. Basically we are free to live our lives. I can choose to work like my liking. I can criticise my government. Basically I am a free & independent person. I love our Democracy any day even with its pitfalls.

Carry On Right, it’s your choice. But there are some problems in your analysis. 1) It’s seems that you never visited China yourself; 2) China changed its own communism orientation by socialist orientation after Mao’s death and it wasn’t just by chance; 3) China is in fact, a mixed economy: half capitalist and half public, whereas the capitalist part is the most dynamic in the world; 4) the socialist part take care more of what is strategic, like energy, public mega works (bridges, ports, aero ports, transport, etc), defense, infrastructure, health and education. 5) probably, you are comparing nowadays China with old communist countries that don’t even exist anymore, this not a good reference, in fact when people compare China they should compare her with Japan or with India which are in the area. Or with China before 1949, when 80% of people were illiterate and the average life expectancy was 44 years old and now is 77 years old; 6) finally I would say that if you inform yourself through anti-China media, you will have a completely distorted idea of the real fact. I’m not chinese, but I travel often to China for business and I’m not communist at all. I have made friends in China and they express theirs opinion without constraints and through public media as well. There are the equivalents of US like Facebook, WhatsApp Twitter and Instagram and they are use by millions of people expressing themselves.

But when we look at all his errors, we get a doubt whether these are willing errors especially limiting the Hindus rights and supporting Muslims. In north lost border and Manassarovar which is heart of Hindu religion! As regards Kashmir abosolute injustice to Hindus! Now it has become a big blunder! His daughter made india secular where as all other religious people inspite of all misbehaviour they are right, only Hindus are wrong His grand son was so happy when Hindus are kicked out of Kashmir happily sleeping as if it won’t worry him. All these events can not be called errors, there seems to be an anti Hindu agenda in Nehru family blood, what a tragedy!!!! For those blaming India it was Chacha Nehru who made the blunder by supplying Chinese army with food in 53 for capturing tibet, then it never believed China will go against India, he was dumb, after 62 war CIA and RAW of India came together but USA then left the support and help in Independent Tibet cause to focuse more on USSR primarily after Sino Soviet split. While USA left the fight for helping Tibet and Nehru was dumb and idiot, Indian Army and RAW maintained special Tibetian forces like SFF and Establishment 22. USA is to be greatly greatly blamed for this blunder too.

Blood boils when we hear the historical connection between India and Tibet from ancient times, how can India give Tibet and now China want more land of India, just basic knowledge, A slkh who visited Tibet in 1900 to 1922 Sadhu Sunder Singh writes that no border between India and Tibet, Sadhu Sunder Singh always use to go Mount Kailash to visit 300yrs Maharishi , he tells the names of all lamas correctly in his book, one beauty, I found the Sikh, Pundits and Tibetan living in close hormony without problem, I really dont know on what basis China claimed Tibet. Particularly see the Tebitan Language, its similar to north east and Tibetan can also learn Hindi easily due to historical link. Only Mongol king conquered Tibet for brief period, China don't have any connection. India must take back Tibet and protect and Train Tibetan until Tibetan can manage independently🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

India has to understand that China would like to isolate India from becoming a super power as only India matches China in population and land mass. Other countries like Japan and South Korea etc are small countries in terms of population and land mass. Also those countries enjoy NATO allies treaty and have USA as a back up. China will not dare attack those countries or create problems. India under no alignment movement didn’t join any faction and has been paying that price. China by indirectly providing Pakistan arms and ammunition has been keeping India busy in wars and unrest while China has been progressing economically. India needs to change its mentality thinking that winning from Pakistan is enough. Pakistan is half the size of India. India could win Pakistan in a few day’s if it goes to full scale war. India must compete with China to become a super power and not restrict itself to smaller country level like Pakistan, nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh etc. India should start taking steps like a super power mentality.

This is a response to a friend who sent this youtube video. Betrayal is a very strong word without taking in to account the circumstances of the time. India and China both got independence around same time, one with non-violence, another with revolution. Both were heavily populated, illiterate and very low per capita income. Nehru opted democracy, individual rights and want to develop India through Socialist policies. China opted Communism, dictatorial rule and no individual rights. India has to deal with partition and the problems associated with the division of the country including Kashmir. After World War II, the cold war erupted between Soviet Union and USA, and Nehru was forced to take sides. Nehru navigated under those circumstances and tried his best. Earlier I said judging Nehru like Monday morning quarterback is unfair. When Nehru became the PM, India was not manufacturing aspirin nor a needle. He has to improve the education, healthcare and employment to 32 Crore people. Nehru genuinely thought both India and China are old civilisations, heavily populated and poor, and agreed to sign puncha sheel to coexist and support each other. It is China who betrayed India time after time to this day. You can blame Nehru for trusting China, but calling Nehru a betrayer is unwise. China from the begining has expansionist goals because of Communist dictatorship. Crores of people died in China with starvation, no one there to ask because of a closed society. Nehru could not do such thing because India was an open society and Indian Communists were eager to support China to this day. Basically Nehru hands were tied, and now blaming Nehru for everything is wrong. Nehru died 56 years ago, subsequently many people governed India, including BJP Vajpayee. They could have alter the policy. Can you blame other leaders too also betrayed because they too failed? Because of Nehru’s vision, today we are still a democracy. He build the institutions that emerged India as the 4th biggest economy. Now, our leaders can change the policy without blaming the past. Instead what is happening in India is the Hindutva(RSS) forces want to polarise the people based on religion and stay in power and impose Brahminical values. Their goal is to demonise Nehru and his accomplishments. Can you blame Nehru keeping India as a Secular country? Because of him, Kashmir is still part of India. Many things happened in India after Nehru such as Votebank politics, population explosion, high unemployment. Because of high unemployment, Saudi petro dollars helped to establish thousands of Madrases in India to brain wash the poor Muslim youth. It helped the RSS to consolidate the power among the Hindu Indians exploiting the Muslim fear. India can revamp their national policies without criticising Nehru and come up with policies to reduce the population and unemployment. China took advantage of Globalisation and emerged as the second biggest economic power of the world, and their per capita income is three times higher than India. If Tibetans want to fight for their freedom, India should train them and help them. RSS can’t divide the society based on religion and able to stand against the most powerful China. In my humble opinion, there is no modern India without the Nehru’s vision! Regards, Madhu K. Reddy

Indian leaders evidently have not only a poor sense of history, but a desire to have a monopoly of negotiations without any ground or military knowledge which has led the Chinese to take more than they have given away. Panch sheel and recognition of Tibet as part of China without any reciprocal advantages shows our attitude of appeasement of those we consider more powerful. All agreemrnts made since 1993 shows how the Chinese have side stepped the main question of demarcation and turned our military patrols in to a group for waving banners. As Claude Arpi says the Corps Commabder leading the negotiations has deep knowledge of Tibet and understanding of ground. He should also be part of the Foreign Minister's negotiating team, which is filled up by diplomats who little knowkedge of security realities.

First of all the Sino-Indian border does not exist. Nehru gifted Tibet to China on a golden platter. He justified the Chinese aggression within India as well as in international stages. Nehru yelled at the new Dalai Lama, upon being told that Tibet must have independence. "That is not possible!", Nehru exploded, "You say you want independence and in the same breath you say you do not want bloodshed. Impossible!" At first glance a hypocritical outburst from a man who had been with MK Gandhi led India to independence through non-violent means exitdragon.blogspot.com

As a common Indian citizen I declare that Nehru was a traitor and that the agreements like Panchsheel etc are Null and Void. We have to go back to pre 1950 era without any agreements. Cannot digest all of this. An act of treachery cannot be binding on future free citizens of India. I am sure all will be ready to sign a petition on this if required.

@Chirag K Mr.Chirag, Late P M Vajpayee walked away from Tibet and then whether we like it or not Late PM Narasimha Rao agreed for the present LAC and signed an agreement. And if China unilaterally violates that agreement then India can change it policies on Tibet. But there is no harm in talking .But if talks fail then India has an option to change its policies which suits our national interest and which is defendable in international forum.

Indian leadership was the weakest of that time. Either they were scared of Chinese or not prepared militarily nor the Babus of that time specially Nehru. Somebody else’s region was handed over just like that. Listen to this author what he says. Truthfulness. Stubbornness of Nehru and dictatorial mentality and other parliamentary voices were silenced. Army was not allowed anything. Congress Babus have ruined the country.

Terrible Political mistakes were made by Pandit Nehru! An idealist, a wooly headed Anglophile, with leftist views, Proud of his brahminical Kashmiri Ancestry. His family moved away from Kashmir and adopted Allahabad. Mahatma Gandhi was impressed by his capacity to address the congress party, whereas Gandhi was a poor speaker. Gandhi Ji impressed the poor masses and assuaged their religious emotions with his prayer meetings. His capacity to take Self punishment was impressive and made him a Pir for the ordinary Muslims as well. He too was fooled by Jinnah. Nehru was fooled by Sheikh Abdullah, and knew not how to engage the Chinese. An imperial power experimenting with communist ideology. There was no comprehension of the Chinese Psyche. I remember reading of Dr. kotnis when I was 12, that informed me somewhat about the condition of the Chinese poor. The trading between Hindustan and China. The common man spoke different dialects while Mandarin was an imperial language. The Xenophobia of Hindus is remarkable, there was Little attempt to understand their neighbour, who were the Melechas, animal eating insect and snake eating people lacking in fine sensitivities. Still no attempt at understanding their Psyche. No Chinese speaking Sociologists or Psychologists around. No attempt to create a behavioural unit that understands the psycho-social product that is the member of the PLA. and the member of the Ruling party. How stupid we are! So many Chinese know our Languages, Marathi, Telugu Tamil and Hindi. How many of us learn Cantonese, or Mongolian or Tibetan. Don’t try to reassure yourself with the same rhetoric. The Chinese are clever, innovative, hard working people, who can manage with minimum comforts.
