Hey Shrimp Keepers,
It's shrimp Saturday which means another information packed video dedicated to freshwater shrimp breeding in aquariums. Today's topic is Indian Almond Leaves, also known as Catappa Leaves. I'm running a special on the Imdian Almond Leaves this week.
Get three (3) free for every 10 purchased:
www.flipaquati...
Also, check out some of the other specials I'm still running:
www.flipaquati...
I talked briefly in the video about Jeremy's fish room. I wanted to give that link for anyone that's interested:
• Fish Room Tour: A Worl...
So, onto Indian Almond Leaves in the aquarium, mainly in freshwater shrimp tanks. I want to go over some quick points and cover them all in the video: origins of Indian almond leaves, their benefits and uses in the aquarium, how many to use for freshwater shrimp and how long the Indian Almond Leaves last.
First off, Indians Almond Leaves originated in South East Asia. They were originally used by betta breeders to condition them to spawn. They also used them in their hospital tanks to get the fish back to health.
Now, what are Indian Almond Leaves used for. The uses are listed in order of importance in my opinion.
The first most important use for Indian Almond Leaves in the aquarium is for trace minerals and other beneficial compounds. In nature, shrimp originate from slow moving river in forests. It is safe to say that leaves do fall into the the river and will decay over time. These leaves release tons of minerals and compounds into the river. In an aquarium, we use over filtered drinking water. Many trace elements are missing that shrimp need to thrive. By adding Indian Almond Leaves to the aquarium, the shrimp start to receive these necessary mineral and it opens the door to really allow them to thrive.
The second most important use for Indian Almond Leaves is for a natural food source for shrimp. Infusoria (micro-organisms) breakdown the leaf in the aquarium. This process usually takes a month to accomplish. The infusoria are a natural food source for shrimp and shrimplets (baby shrimp). Therefore, Indian Almond Leaves are essential to creating a stable environment for freshwater shrimp to breed.
Indian Almond Leaves are pumped full of anti-fungal properties to prevent die off in nature. These properties and compounds are believe to be released into the water column of an aquarium as the leaf breaks down. With that being said, many hobbyists (like myself) believe that Indian Almond Leaves help fight off bacterial and fungal infections in shrimp.
These three reason above are enough reason to begin using Indian Almond Leaves in your aquarium for freshwater shrimp. The leaves provide trace minerals and compound, a natural food source and provide anti-fungal an anti-bacterial properties to an aquarium. Although, this is not all they do:
Indian Almond leaves will also help to lower the ph of an aquarium. How much they lower ph depends on the level of kh (carbonate hardness) in the aquarium. The higher the kh, the harder it will be to lower the ph meaning it'll take more leaves.
The only downfall to Indian Almond leaves is that they do change the color of the water to a tea color. Hobbyists that like clear water will not like this. Also, some find the leaves sore on the eye and do not prefer to use them for this reason.
The dosage of Indian Almond Leaves for shrimp tanks is simple, one leaf (6 to 8 in) per 20 gallons of water. Add a new leaf as one begins to decay. This will usually occur after 2-4 weeks. For larger tanks with higher loads of shrimp, add more leaves as necessary.
I hope you enjoyed this video on Indian Almond Leaves. If you are interested in buying these leaves, feel free to check out my website:

i can attest for the antibacterial proerties. i have a little 5L "freak tank" with asellus aquaticus, dugesia (yes, flat worms) and several miniscule crustacean species. when the effect of the leaves wears off, an icky white film forms on the water, after i feed the worms a small pond snail. i add a fresh piece of leave, along with it's warm soaking water, and over night that film is gone

We use lots of verities of leaves for our fish breeding projects. Leaves make a difference a lot with South American and Asian species. Indian almond, magnolia, grape beach which look killer. And good old fashion Oak are always in my Botanical container. All the above mentioned leaves have a purpose in our fish projects.

First and foremost. I love the videos. Now. That said. I came to your channel to learn about the shrimp and the IALs that you are talking about. I learned a lot. I to have a question about them. But I see that's useless. I try and read all questions posted by others before I ask mine. The only replies you made were to the people who said GREAT Video DUDE. and such. To those you replied with a thanks man. But. There were a bunch of honest and great questions being asked that were just ignored. I am new to this hobby and will continue to watch and enjoy your videos because you are very very knowledgeable about what you are doing. There are so few people out there like you that we the consumer can turn to. I have started ordering from you and will also continue to do so. I think you pay very close attention to detail about your shrimp. But please help us folk who really don't know what or who to ask when we have what seems to be an elementary question. If you reply to this. I will ask my question. And please take no offense to this by any means. It's just an observation on my part. You have so much to offer to this hobby and hopefully will remain a great supply for the industry. Regards. Mark.

Flip Aquatics - LupDiesel thank you very much for the super fast response. My question is. Are all Indian almond leaves the same ? Meaning. If I buy from you and two other sources. Let's say HAWAII and the Philippines. Are the beneficial properties of them both the same ? What started this question in my mind was that I have bought from three sources and did this just because of to much late night crown and coke and eBay and amazon and PayPal ! lol anyway. I noticed that the batch from Hawaii did not stain the water and the batch from the Philippines stained a lot. Dose this mean that the first mentioned leaves aren't any good ? Thank you very much and as always. Great job. Regards. Mark

+Mark O Polo in theory, they should all do the same. Although, there are different types of cattapa trees so I suppose it could potentially differ. Although, the older they get maybe they lose the tannis. They shouldn't but it is possible I would think

Unfortunately I'm trying to set up a new shrimp tank and it seemed to be going well for a few weeks until I started to spot thin white tubular worms that wiggle and swim all around the tank. I'm not sure if they are planaria or Deitus worms or something completely different. The worms seem to be killing off my Amano and Cherry Red Shrimp, so I'm thinking about investing in products like NO PLANARIA or a GUSH Planaria trap..do you think that's a wise decision or do you have other suggestions to fix this outbreak? I'm hoping to have a tank full of shrimp so I can toss in leaves and do other cool things with them. So it's so heartbreaking to see the shrimp die T ^ T

I have read that it will lower pH and act as a buffer, but can't say for sure that that's true. Make sure you understand kH if you're having pH issues, and see if yours is too low. There's also an additive called Shrimp pH A by aqua vitro that will help. Make sure you get the "A" version of the product, not B, B raises pH.
