This brought extreme comfort to me as my son's halfmoon betta has dropsy. He is in a small tank so I put a small catappa leave in his tank. It's been a half a day and seeing results already in his skin!!! A blessing💛💛💛😊
@@BetterBetta aww thanks, I actually used melafix before that and after that he had complications with breathing. So I changed his water 100% afterwards. Then I put the catappa leaf in there. I seen results, however, it didn't save him😢 we lost him three days later. Thank you for replying💛
I just found your videos on RU-vid. I really like that you educate on your videos and are not "bouncing off the walls" like other Fish/aquarium RU-vid videos. Great video!
I only use these in emergencies if my fish ever gets sick. Louis the betta is so beautiful reminds me of my boy. 😊 Good advice for people who never used them before.
I traded my 2kg white beach sands and rocks for 6 bettas, and we happen to have a big Indian almond tree in front of our house. so lucky ahaha thank you!!!
Recently started owning a betta fish. It was a gift to my 2 year old niece so it's something nice for her to look at but I want to know if I'm taking care of it properly so here I am going through a bunch of information for taking care of one. Few questions for Almond Leaves: 1) Is there such a thing as too much tanin? 2) What would be a good amount for a 3gallon tank? 3) If I don't have a natural tank and I leave the leaf inside to decay, should I take it out since all I have is a single betta fish? 4) When people use Almond Leaves, you mentioned it's use in breeding. Could this be treated as an aphrodisiac? Or just something to make the fish comfortable? 5) Apparently this is very good medical-wise for bettas. Does this mean it can overdose?
Well I hope ur betta got a much bigger more natual tank otherwise I'd be surprised its still with us or at the most healthy at this point 7months on...
I have a bunch of young bettas and noticed that their fins started curling. Where I'm from we have tons of these trees so I collected some at a park and rinced them and dropped pieces in each fish container. I'm hoping the leaves will combat any stress that's causing fins to curl. Will keep you posted. Thanks for video.
My betta is suffering right now from fin rot and his body's turning to white. Also his stomach seems to be bigger than before. Will almond leaves treats my betta?
I seem to always get them at local pet shops since I’m already there, but YES! I didn’t know I could get them on Amazon yet (I never looked on Amazon back then lol) but lots of botanicals are on there in massive packs for practically nothing. Definitely a great place to buy them!
Your fish should be fine! The tannins release pretty slowly, so it likely won’t affect your fish at all. If you have any sensitive plants though, they may lose their leaves- that happened to me when I added in a big leaf. But everything else should be alright!
@@BetterBetta thank you! I took it out and did a partial water change cause the water was turning very brown. Good to know that my fish wasn’t badly affected but I do have Java fern in there and I had to trim some leaves and was wondering why some of the leaves died but now I know 😆 thanks 🙏
Thank you! Just bought 10 Indian almond leaves for my betta since his top fin is flopping a bit and has one really small white dot that is making me so anxious.
Hopefully the little mark on his fin goes away! I’ve had almond leaves completely restore fins that were almost fully gone - so I hope these work well for your fish too!
I boiled the leaves and got really tanned water. I plan to use the concentrate while water changes. How do I store the extract. Refrigerate or just leave the bottled extract in the open
How often would you use the almond leaf? I tested my water and it's too hard. I ordered the leaf and it comes tomorrow. I have two separate 5 gallon tank with one betta in each?
Hello there. My male betta has developed dropsy. I thought it was a tumor, but it wasn't affecting him. He ate well and swam. He seemed healthy for months, since I noticed his belly. I didn't know what dropsy was, until today. I'm treating with Betta Fix and hoping for the best. Is it too late?
Hi there. Hopefully your betta is doing alright. I’ve heard varying things on dropsy. While I’ve never had success curing it currently and there used to be no cure, some people are now having success treating it- even though I haven’t been able to. The key is catching it early and without being with your fish personally it’s hard to tell exactly when it would have taken effect (the pineconing), so I wish you the best of luck with your fish, I hope everything turns out okay. 💕
@@BetterBetta He passed away. It was hard watching him suffer. Had him two years. When I bought him, he was at the bottom of the stack... looked very sick and was missing scales... I decided to save him and give him a chance. He had two great years with me. Thank you for you videos. I saw the one you posted on dropsy. 👍
Unless the medicine has a requirement/recommendation for working in harder water, than there is no need to change the water in between! Almond leaves would be a fine supplement, or just added in after the course of medication is done.
From my research, as Mari has said, I’ve read some fishkeepers have successfully healed fin rot and other issues with these leaves, both on their own or combined with a medicine.
Thanks for watching and thank you for the tip! After watching a bit of the video again, I can see how it would be distracting to some. I have another video on scheduled upload with this music I believe, but will definitely change the track and/or turn it down for future videos! :)
I've heard that dried banana leaves and mulberry leaves are good in aquariums - as are alder cones and driftwood. However these soften the water and release tannins also, they might not have the same medicinal benefits that make indian almond leaves so popular.
It should be fine, the tannins will release slowly so it won’t harm him. That’s what is tinting the water! Blackwater tanks are rich with tannins and don’t harm them, so I think one leaf will be just fine.
I added a half one to my 5 gallon tank with my Betta and a Khuli Loach...I noticed white fuzz on the leaf after about 9 days. Is that mold and should I toss it? ( I was scared and tossed it right away).
It certainly could have been. I know plant matter does decay in the tank, and while I haven’t seen mine do this before, it is not uncommon. It may have been a type of algae, but I would still say throwing it out would be a good choice. I use the tiniest piece when it put it in my tank, and that way I’m not out anything if it does get all gross
@@BetterBetta Thank you for replying...really! What I decided to do was place a leaf in a glass container and add boiling water and left it overnight. I now have lots of tannins and no moldy leaves lol :)
Yep! There will be no harm in that. Because the tannins release slowly, there will be no shock to your fish. If your using just the straight tannins, I’d recommend adding a little at a time and not all at once, but no matter how you choose to do it, it can be done when the fish is in the tank!
Great video! Just found your channel. I have a Fluval Spec 3-stage Filtration System (Comes with foam block, activated carbon and BioMax bio rings). Will this affect the benefits of Indian Almond Leaf?
Thank you! A carbon filter does remove chemicals from the water, so the natural benefits of the almond leaf should be untouched. If you are using them purely for curing fin rot and are not seeing an improvement you could remove it temporarily, but I have never had an issue with my carbon filters and the effectiveness of my almond leaves. If you have them in all the time for a blackwater tank, then I definitely wouldn’t worry about the filter! ☺️
Hi! Question, is it ok to use green tea on your betta? Because someone suggested us to put in some green tea as a subtitute if there’s no IAL and to heal bettas. So, I’ve googled and done some research, but there’s not much info...
I’ve heard you can, as long as it’s natural (no additives) and is decaf, but I’d personally only use that for emergencies if it’s impossible to get your hands on IAL. They can even be ordered online, so I’d suggest trying all those methods before using tea- just to be safe! As you noted, there is a lot more info on IAL. But, it’s not harmful to use tea if very careful and knowledgeable about what’s in your tea!
Will almond leaves stain my betta fish? i have a betta with fancy white tails and my wife claims that almond leaf has stained the tail.. is that possible?
I couldn’t find a definitive answer online, BUT from what I’ve read, most extracts and oils are best before 3 years of age. They don’t necessarily expire, but might loose their potency.
@@BetterBetta oh wow, thanks for replying so fast! Yeah I plan to boil and store in a bottle. I have a 5 gal tank, how much of this extract do you think I should mix in my water?
Some people wait until it completely decays and only the leafy skeleton is left. Others remove it when it is just starting to decompose. It’s really up to you!
I don't know if you are responding to anyone at the moment but is it possible that these leaves can kill bettas? I've seen some reviews that they killed their betta.
I’m still checking in every now and then! Hope you and your family are staying safe. I haven’t seen those reviews myself so can’t comment on them specifically, but I do know any drastic water changes can stress out a fish and make them sick/pass away. If they are added in large amounts at once, it is possible a fish may go into shock, but that’s just a theory. As for the leaves being toxic, the tannins are found in their own natural habitat so the actual properties of the leaves are definitely safe!
I've seen a couple people comment this too! It must be awesome to have an endless supply of these. Luckily they're pretty affordable to buy here (Canada).
@@BetterBetta Yes it is awesome. You just casually go out of home and bring as many as you want from anywhere. And you dont need to get permission too cuz people want to get rid of these yellow fallen leaves anyway.
I’ve seen a couple other people say that 😂 Some say they have these trees literally in their backyards and dropping these leaves everywhere. I’m jealous, I gotta pay for leaves 😂
