'Furore over Zomato’s decision to introduce a 'Pure Veg Mode' with a dedicated fleet service dressed differently is no surprise. All this ‘pure veg’ stuff is, sadly enough, a sign of the times', says author and columnist Vir Sanghvi. Watch him explain how and why, food which has the potential to become a global example of India's soft power, has become too politicised. #SharpEdge

As a shetty my community is known to run pure veg south Indian restaurants in western and southern India, but we are strict meat eaters. Our clients are both vegetarians and meat-eating communities. We have never had any vegetarian come up and ask if the cook who is making the meal is vegetarian. Most Indians have always respected each other's eating habits. Gujjus and Jains have always lived in their gettos of Mumbai where meat eaters were kept away. Since they are a wealthy community, they still have monopoly in all prime neighborhoods of Mumbai. A friend who works in Lodha builders told us that in one of their luxury towers in Lower Parel, flats above the 30th floor were bought mostly by Jain diamond merchants on one condition that no meat-eating families will be sold flats above the 30th floor. I know of a Jain woman who would not even eat in a vegetarian's house because they eat pyaaz and lasan. That's India...full of contradictions. Sorry Veer but thoda over analysis ho gaya. These behaviors always existed in our country for centuries.

The justification he gave for his Jain community and family is correct but he conveniently skipped the justification for Hindus even though both communities follow the same concept of Karma where one’s choices are one’s own Karma! There are good people, bad people in every community. Not everyone acts the same way. Blanket generalisation by calling all Hindus who eat vegetarian as castists is total ignorance or wicked targeted vilification of one community. If you are capable of understanding that not all Jains force others then same open mindedness and sensibility should be extended to the Hindu community. Nobody is forced to be vegetarian nor is anyone ordained to animal sacrifice or eat meat! This shows his bias. He had done another video on this same topic during vijayadashami n even in that video he justifies his own community while he continues the blanket generalisation of Hindus as castists for eating vegetarian.

Westerners look down upon people eating horse n dog meat even though for many cultures eating dog meat is very common m. But this same left wing shames and vilifies them and now they are made to feel ashamed for eating dog meat! Why are they deciding what others should eat if those regions have been culturally doing so for generations? Why are they forcing their moral beliefs of not eating dogs n horses on eastern cultures? Do you not see the hypocrisy?? Forcing their beliefs on others is ok for west n left wing and considered as if the west is making those people moral by not eating dog/ horse meat. But, cultural and emotional tendencies of native Indians cultures followed by Hindus,Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists of not eating cow meat is considered as supremist?? Stick to one logic for all. If not supporting eating beef is supremist then preaching others about not eating horse n dog meat is supremist too. OR if not eating cow meat is moral and ethically acceptable then not eating dog/horse meat can be moral and ethically acceptable too. Shri Sanghvi is clearly too young to remember the ubiquitous 'pure vegetarian restaurant' signs outside mom-and-pop Bharateeya bhojana 'hotels' before the sophisticated aesthetic of Mc Donalds and Pizza Hut chains pushing 'enriched wheat fluor' took over.

1. Vegetarians have been made to feel somehow ashamed; Hindus made to feel small, when all others..halal included are readily accepted. 2. Leftist ideology has labeled it as a casteist idea when it's more about preference. Even if it was so earlier, it's not applicable today. If people are free to eat non-veg and want to feel free to eat beef, what is the issue with others who prefer to be veg? 2. Pure veg actually shows a choice of veg food minus eggs and meat. Or food that has not come into contact with or cooked in oil used for non-veg. It's a term like lacto...eggitarian..vegan etc. attaching it to caste is when the problem started. 3. If every segment of society is catered for, why should veg people not be granted the same? 4. Everyone talks of minority rights. If veg people are a minority, don't they have rights? 5. Should non-veg pple force their choices on veg? Indians have traditionally been very accomodating of diverse choices, whether in clothes, customs or food. It's modern people raised with leftist ideology, who create schisms. Almost as if looking for a reason to create a ruckus and controversy. Ask any person from the older generation....they will have no issues with food choices and will go out of their way to be hospitable and cook to the guests' preference.

Cow slaughter should be strictly prohibited,. like it or not the land of BHARATA or India survived and flourished under Hindu dharmic fundamentals. Yes it's secular now, has been for a ,long time ,accommodated all faiths that doesn't mean some of the very principles of the land should be twisted for the same of secularism. While I strongly agree with the fact that fate of cows or cattles under the rule of BJP hasant improved,the status of GAU in Hindu Religion shouldn't be questioned.

The justification he gave for his Jain community and family is correct but he conveniently skipped the justification for Hindus even though both communities follow the same concept of Karma where one’s choice are one’s own Karma! Nobody is forced to be vegetarian nor is anyone ordained to animal sacrifice! This shows his bias and blanket vilification of Hindus and stinks of veiled hatred! What about Western developed countries banning horse meat n dog meat? Why can’t they let people decide what goes into their mouth? Because they are culturally and emotionally connected to those animals! Why doesn’t the left wing question banning horse meat or dog meat and western society looking down upon people eating those meat which is a normal diet for people in the west!

Sorry Sir. I don’t agree at all. Nowadays it is very cool to like biryani & snigger about preference for dal khichdi. I live in Chennai & every alternate eatery is a Biriyani joint. In a city like Madurai there are hardly one or two restaurants serving veg food within the city centre. It is not the ‘Hitler type uncles’ who call the shots but the lefties aided by movie directors with agenda who have slowly shifted the popularity of food preferences to biryani & liquor from khichdi & nimbu paani

I agree with most things in the video but not when he says that there are no logical reasons for vegetarianism. Inter alia, the ethical arguments are very compelling and the health benefits, proven.

How does caste apply in this case? Almost all bengalis for example... be it from high caste or any other caste or religious background eat non veg... esp fish! While many people from so called lower caste in Gujrat etc are vegetarian... The "caste" argument is a total bogus one by these "left liberal" who see a "conspiracy" in everything!

You are being unfair to say that vegetarianism is the excuse for religious segregation. The main thing is that the smell of non vegetarian food can be triggering when most of us live in such close quarters.

Smell of Indian food itself is triggering to people in western countries. Will you support if those countries ban Indian food?
@milindapanha

@@ckush928 The difference is the way we live. The close proximity of neighbors is any big city is such that sounds smells are shared. I am not against amyone eating wjay they want provided my senses are not assaulted in my own home. This doesn’t happen in Western/ developed countries. It is true that Indian food aroma / smell is not welcome, but neighbors don’t get the smells due to the lack of crowding. I would absolutely support not eating a dhepla in a crowded train- and Inlove dhepla.

The decision by Zomato was deeply problematic and disturbing. This decision was faced with stiff resistance and public backlash online which resulted in its revocation. But this mirrored the social and political milieu that we live in. It launched the separate veg fleet on social media. It was viewed as imposing dietary habits of one cohort of society on the other section of society and tried to make the "other" look like the bad guys and outcasts. Now lets look at the numbers and facts that might explain this backlash. Vegetarians are a minorty in india across regions,faith,caste and class. The majority are non-vegetarians which includes both veg and non-veg among their ranks. It signifies that pure vegetarians are much shorter in number. Another study shows that vegetarians are comfortable eating with non vegetarians which explains why there was so much public uproar. Nowadays, there is a concerted attempt to regulate and moral police our personal life and choices like food,clothing,faith and even political choices. This bodes a very saddening picture of our social discourse and is at odds with the rights provided to the citizens by the constitution.
