Indian "Franken-Seiko" watch unboxing and full review! - I Review Crap!

Today I review a FrankenSeiko wrist watch that I bought on eBay for $22 shipped to me from India. A "franken" watch is a watch that (like Frankenstein's monster) was likely cobbled together from bits of other timepieces, possibly held together with glue/tape/wire). I was just curious about what one gets with one of these wrist watches, so I went ahead and grabbed one. These are VERY plentiful on eBay, and run from about $10 to $30. Most have undergone some form of restoration and have been re-dialed, sometimes wild non-original colors like purple and lime green. These watches were originally 70's vintage Seikos, so the dial sizes at 34/35mm are extremely small compared to modern watches.

I bought one from India and it keeps good time. I give it a good shake at bedtime and it gets through the night. Or as its so small and comfortable I mostly just wear it. Keeps excellent time + - 5 seconds per day. £15

Mine just delivered yesterday, apparently from the same seller (nearly identical packaging and notes). Swiss 17J movement. Henri Sandoz et fils, US$15.49 shipped. Appears to be mostly genuine, except the hands are rather nasty. Dial appears to be original. Was about 40s/day off, so opened up and regulated it to better than 10s. Dial was jammed into case, so movement came out without dial, hands fell off. Movement in good shape. One dial foot set screw missing, but holds together in case. Reassembled, and it's all good. After regulation it's working well. I wasn't expecting to take it apart in the first hours, but I did. Great fun and mostly exactly what I expected. Gave the seller five stars.

I actually think that there is a market for very creative interpretations of Seiko 5 watches. There are so many Indian artisans that can really make those Seiko 5 pop like nobody's business! That is a competitive advantage that I would pay a little extra for... Ya know?

I had a good experience..a rebuilt Citizen-they did a repaint dial and replated case. Watch runs great and I love the dial color. i guess i lucked out

I've purchased many more since this video. I'm scoring about 50% good/bad watches, meaning that within about 2 weeks half of them died (either were dead on arrival, or died within a couple weeks). But they're so cheap, it's easy to buy a few and take a risk....

CAUSE it might have the original citixen movement, citizen movmts are war machines...so probably you had luck. Indina repainted dials look like shit, dont like itt. too many imperfections...

And you can't fault that Indian seller for packaging. They shipped it like it could have been dropped from a low flying airplane and survived I hope you gave them a good review for that and I might actually consider getting an HMT, they have some interesting looking ones and it'd be pretty unique in USA and their not expensive.

I came for the review.......but stayed for the music......very nice, laid back explanation of the watch. I have bought numerous watches from india. Most of my purchases were very good and a few not so good. If you find a good seller...stick with them. I'm up to around 35 watches Plus a lot of nato straps. I brought six HMT watches from India for less than 20 dollars each. All beautiful 36 mm watches. Only one failed to work properly. It was my fault, I over wound it... But this is a gamble. Good Luck !

I'm gonna start collecting Indian Frankenwatches. They are very well built, hit or miss depending on your karma. And at $30-50 each it's a nice hobby.

I got lucky. I bought one a few years ago. A Citizen auto with a jade green metallic sunburst dial on a twistOflex band. The watch looked like new, inside and out. It even had a new o-ring. $20us shipped. My only complaint was that the pictures showed a flush mounted crown at 4 o'clock. The one i got was a standard crown at 12. I messaged them about it. They didn't even respond to the message. The next morning there was a PayPal refund on my account. It's in regular rotation a couple time a week. Still works great.

Cool review, man! I totally understand the fascination of this frankenwatch-scene. It's just fun scanning through the endless offers of those Indian Ebay-Shops, looking for the odd, maybe somehow unusual little Crap-Watch for a price of a Chicken Curry at you favorite Indian Restaurant. Then weeks go by, you forget about the whole thing, till you get that little stamp-covered bundle. Again, a lot of fun with unpacking, testing and then...(if you're lucky) Wow! It even runs! I find it's a cheap price for a good amount of fun. I've got 4 of those things by now. 2 of them running pretty good, 2 others not at all:). But really, it's not about the Watch, rather than amusement.

When I get a package like that from overseas I find the best few stamps and steam them off and save them, one hobby feeding into another lol. Like how I ordered a USSR military coat and the same seller knows that I love USSR watches and he put a bunch of them in with it, 7 out of the 10 run, the other 3 just need a good cleaning and holy cow that coat is warm and also comfortable and looks really cool like a like a British P coat but much warmer.

Very nice video I have two of these watches one is an Hmt rajat bought it for my girlfriend she loved it we have it serviced first it is working very nice for a year.. I also bought a '' seiko 5'' dial is propably fake but the movement is real the hairspring dismantled the first month but it was an easy fix.. For an introduction to a mechanical watch it is a nice start... Here were I live the cheapest mechanical watch) like the one you show) begins from 120$ from a store.... So yeah I also own a nice orient crystal witch was my Dada bought back in 1982 and runs fine... I like your humor and content

I just received a couple of Frankendivers, seiko skx009 and six a35, both from the Philippines. The 009 needed to be dried out, crystal condensation rendered it unreadable, wouldn't run more than a couple of minutes and then ran 20 minutes fast over an hour. I took it to my jeweller, he's smoothing everything out. the A35 was perfect, not verbatim, but very nice and crisp. Be SURE to study the photos closely.

HMT at least about it's house made watches is like ridiculous good customer support it seems! They were like if anything breaks on it we can get you parts for it very cheap if you fix it yourself, this is really awesome. I did not expect this from an Indian company but they are great! I guess it's like Russian Raketa how I can get parts for my Soviet watch really easily too but HMT are super willing to help.

I have seen these a lot and extremely good prices for vintage Seiko and Citizens, the watch dial size is an issue for me as I don't like diddlysquat little dials, I have got my eye on two Citizen's one with a refractive dial but bizarrely in a gold strap and case, it is just so fugly and cheesy it would look in place with my Soviet uber cheesey stuff I was thinking :)

I got some winders from an indian seller. No expectation that its not franken. The expectations are reigned in and two are ones that I like. One has a acrylic crystal that does not stay on and other winder is sporadic. Hit or miss. Me, mine came in a small plastic container, but similar wrapping of the watches.

Yup. You are right...though....don't have second thoughts. I own Seiko5 3 watches at affordable price. All watches movements are original, dials are repainted to appear it as new. One watch day-quick setting doesn't work , but date works well. And apparently, it gives me good timing mostly accurate close to +/-10 seconds a day. The other two watches work so well. I do swap the watches according to my attire as I had chosen light to dark , different color dials. I can't afford to buy 3 Seiko5 original watches from seiko store. But refurbished! Yup...I can. Best part is....they work well. It is all serviced by Franken watches assemblers as sell them online. Quality testing is the issue. Nothing else.

Would of been nice if the seller had mentioned the negative feedback while advertising the watch. That type of individual is someone I wouldn't spend a dime with, that's ten cents.

HMT (Hindustan Machine Tool) watch Co has shut down, so I suppose some of the workforce went into repair/service and even making marriage watches. Citizen were contracted to set up the production and HMT actually produced a watch sold as a Citizen in India, which is what HMT watches basically are. So if you buy a cheap Citizen from India, it's not actually a fake.

Do check out HMT and Titan both are indian brands. You can buy new from their website and look for vintage in ebay, if you can obtain a genuine one in NOS condition, should serve you good.

I just ordered a really cool looking black face lume dial HMT from India for $17 dollars and if I need parts you can look up HMT online, I sent them an E-mail and they replied in a few hours telling me take pictures of what you need and we can get you the parts if you need them, so this may be a watch I have and fix and keep for a very long time because the actual company is so good, they even offered if it doesn't work and you don't mind paying shipping we can fix it for a flat $40 dollar fee and even that is really awesome!

Good vid. I messaged a similar ebay seller and he said "Refurbished means the watch is operated by a genuine Seiko Movement however; the case & dial are recreated. " Does that sound likely to you?

Hmmm... this is probably the only way that buying Indian frankens makes ANY sense. The 50% success rate I've had of the watch still running after a month, makes buying these for actual wear questionable, but for part harvesting.... sounds brillian!

Dat Person Doe. Yeah, it was almost two years ago and I was new to the Franken-watch game...also people in general weren't clued in to what these watches were and there was bidding competition. Wouldn't pay more than $12 for an Indian watch today...

And i'd recommend only buying ones with an original metal strap instead of those with (unwearable) fake-leather. Otherwise you might end up topping up your costs, with a real leather Strap costing more or less as much as your whole watch did.

They are cobbled together from old Seiko watch parts. You may get lucky but a genuine 5 is such a value proposition why take the chance? P.S I thought I would take a punt knowing the result but still get outbid so I guess there are gullible people out there. All have mega high miles on them avoid.

It's not a fake watch, it's a well used and abused Seiko (probably from the 70's or 80's) put back together with whatever cases and movements they had around. Somehow I doubt that this little cottage industry in India of refurbishing old watches is going to put Seiko out of business, sorry.

Of course, you are correct there is a difference between a Franken-Watch and a fake. The point I was trying to make though was that many of these watches are being sold with as having a " Seiko Guarantee" which we know is just nonsense. Also, people who buy these watches, thinking they are getting something authentic are just being ripped off. My business is buying and selling vintage watches of all types and price ranges. I am just fed up of telling people that the watch they bought in good faith on Ebay l is just a [piece of crap.

Roberto Ataro I tend to agree. As an experiment I purchased 5 more of these watches (all different brands) since I made this video. I think out of the 5, only two keep good time. I'll probably do a round-up of these sometime in January. At which point I'll also change my conclusions on Indian Franken-watches.

Review Crap. I started collecting Franken automatic watches from India about 2 years ago. I had a total of maybe 20 watches, I received another Seiko 5 this morning and another Seiko is on the way. I had my fair share of problems with some of these watches right out of the box, hands falling off, crystal flying off on the first few shakes to get the movement started, some watches gained 5 minutes a day, others ran for a few seconds and stopped altogether. Anyway what I am really impressed with is the intricate detail of the refurbished dials and the polished cases of most of these watches that I had in my collection, however some of the movements leave a lot to be desired. When I started my collection the average price was between $4.50 and $7.50. The most that I paid is $11.00 for a beautiful Citizen which my local watch repair guy regulated to + 30 secs/day. AS of today I am looking to add a Orient and also a HMT automatic.

The last one I picked up was actually not bad. It's a Ricoh automatic, and so far it has been working great, I just need to get a new strap for it. That is the one universal thing I've noticed... ALL the straps that come on these Indian watches are garbage...particularly if you have very large wrists like mine.

There is nothing that is genuine Seiko about that watch, and I mean nothing. It is a straight up Fake, not a Frankenstein!!! That said I believe the case itself and movement is actually HMT. All the Seiko branded stuff is absolutely fake!

eh? Can you prove this assertion? At the very least the movement is an actual 17 jewel Seiko 7009 movement probably from the 1980's. There is enough photos of 7009 movememnts on the internet to quickly figure that out. As for the case... The caseback states it's 7019-8180 (while wrong for the 7009 movement), when it is searched for in Google, reveals a bunch of Seiko watches with the same case design. So real Seiko movement and a real (but mismatched) Seiko case... The only likely aftermarket things here are the dial and hands, maybe the crystal.....

@@ReviewCrap Hello From India ! I think you need to revisit the country's History to know about Time Keeping we studied Astro Physics and relied on Naksahtras for time Keeping. Anyways we also have a Good History when it comes to Vintage watches please try to know Why did West End Co. Produced watches for India. Anyways long gone are the days when India was looted and sucked up completely. Not a exact way to offer you a watch however if you are interested in a Peace of History a 1950'S West end Sowar please connect with me.
