Ive graduated from DU in commerce stream and i remember studying a book on Indian culture and philosophy only once in the very first semester, that too was under the Four-year Undergraduate plan which has now been removed so cant say what they teach now. However i studied Indian philosophy, higher education in India in pre-independence and post independence era, it was quite comprehensive, under Paper 1 in NET(National Eligibility Test) which is pretty much compulsory if you want to become a professer of any kind. Paper 1 is common to all no matter which stream you are from.

Years ago Mumbai University used to offer a major in Ancient Indian Culture at UG level with Indian Philosophy being one of the six papers, the other papers being Anc. Indian Art & Architecture, Literature, Religion, Society, State & Polity. Today this course has been watered down with the inclusion of Archaeology, Museology and Heritage Management which could have been kept as a single paper with more emphasis on the previous course papers.

If everyone gets educated then this stupid brahmanical system of vedas and puranas gets exposed which are not written older than 14th century CE( you can see the proof on UNESCO website). The only reason that government schools are kept shit is to continue this shit vedic knowledge in peoples minds and not let them find proof of these vedic stories(ramayana, mahabharat,puranas) which never existed before adishankaracharya(7th-8th AD). Please provide any proof of the so called vedic period if it ever existed.

Hi Abhijeet, good to see you covering philosophy! :) Small correction: Indian philosophy did not stop evolving 1000 years ago. 2 of the prominent Vedanta schools - VishistAdvaita and Dvaita thrived post 1000 CE, propounded by Acharya Ramanuja and Acharya Madhva respectively. Even during the Vijayanagar empire in 15th century there were incredible Vedanta works being composed. Basic Nyaya-Vaisesika text called Tarka Sangraha taught in Gurukulas today was composed as late as 17th century in Andhra Pradesh! :)

India has a deep history of the philosophy of language, including Panini (morphological derivation), Bhartihari (liars paradox, very unique Sphota concept), Jaimini, Katyayana (both talk about relation of how language is formed in our brain before we utter, it relationship of words with real world phenomena the word is referring too, etc - Wittgenstein's precursor in field), Sangam Period philosophy literature (Tolkappiyam, Tirrukural - both amazing books on grammar, ethics, epistemology, etc). Not to mention how deep each of the philosophies you mentioned go. For example Buddhism has Yogachara (first delve into consciousness unparalleled to any ancient tradition) & Nagarjuna's Madhamika.

The breadth and depth of Indian philosophy is incredibly vast, mind boggling and inspiring all at the same time. Having been deeply attracted to Advaita Vedanta (and nowadays Kashmiri Shaivism as well), I am going to make it my life's mission to explore the full range of Indian philosophy, hopefully within the next 30 years while my physical body and mind have the capacity to absorb, reflect and act on this knowledge. Thank you Abhijit for this wonderful overview. I would recommend people to read the book "Sarva Darshana Sangraha/Samgraha" - an overview of all the philosophies is mentioned in that book.

Indian teachings are about attaining enlightenment. Basic teaching is to ask the question "Who am I ?". We are identified with the body and mind but they are accumulations since childhood. We have existence beyond our body and mind. Accessing that dimension is purpose of spirituality. Enlightenment is when we experientially get answer to "Who am I"

I learnt that by the time of Veda Vyāsa, nearly 10,800 schools of Philosophy (Darşanas) did exist & in the last 1000 years too new schools of thought such as Visishtādvaita, Shuddadvaita, Dvaitādvaita, Achintyabhedābheda etal emerged.

My curriculum as a Post Graduate student in Philosophy has a mixed blend of Eastern (Indian subcontinent) and Western (Ancient Greek, British, German and American) philosophies. The current lot of academicians are hell bend on making comparative studies. The comparison is mostly between Indian schools of philosophy and Western philosophers. In India, importance has always been given to schools of philosophy unlike the western world where a philosophical idea is almost entirely the brainchild of a particular philosopher. Hence the fascination with western influence like most of us have today with the influencers of culture, ideology, choices, habits, profession and more. I think it's easier to connet to a person with an ideology than the ideology itself. I might be wrong though. However, I am writing this because in my 1st semester I have 3 papers from Indian Philosophy and 1 each from Western Logic and Western Philosophy out of total 5 papers. So there is ample content I am studying from Indian Philosophy at this point. This ratio will balance itself in subsequent semesters, I am sure. Gandhiji himself borrowed his philosophical beliefs from both the Eastern and Western world. His ideologies of Human freedom and Civil disobedience were borrowed from philosophy of 'The Bhagwat Gita' and the american philosopher and naturalist 'Henry David Thoreau'. Food for thought-Sanskrit should be taught sacrosanctly and studied vehemently to arouse interest in Indian philosophy. It should be mandated compulsarily into our education irrespective of the boards and as early as in the primary classes.

Sanskrit is the language which United North India and South India. North Indian languages have Turkic Farsi and Arabic words because of the islamist inv∆sions. South Indian languages have more sanskrit words than present day Punjabi or Kashmiri
@Sharmaji-lu2bp
@Sharmaji-lu2bp 3 года назад
Sanskrit and tamil both developed indipendently in india. That's why grammatically they are different Still you'll find many sanskrit loan words in tamil. Although north india and south indian had similar culture and religion , but north indians had trade and cultural relations with central asians and europeans of that time (read about indo aryan superstate of mittani ) . So you'll find linguistic similarities between sanskrit and many european languages But tamilians had no cultural connection with any foreign land so tamil remained here in india and gradually evolved itself and influenced south indian languages like Telugu , malyalam etc..

There's also the Bhagavad philosophy which comes from the Bhagavad Gita and Lord Krishna's teaching here is that the body is mortal but the soul is immortal. We can only attain Moksha (release) by freedom from the wheel of rebirth through good karmas. Buddhist philosophy borrowed heavily from the Bhagavad Gita except Buddha also preached that there is no Supreme Soul or God. However, after he attained Nirvana the Mahayana Buddhist followers filled up the emptied heavens with Bodhisattvas and Tibetan goddesses too.

I can give references to scriptures which talk so much shit about lower varnas and avaranas and there are people who really support that even today. Check out Meister Ekchart, and Sufi master like Rumi.* As a Pagan/Hindu in the path of Jñāna Yoga, it will be wrong for me to put down other religions. It is understandable that Christianity has destroyed many cultures in the past and still doing it, but by blaming every individual within this religion will be a big mistake. One must refrain from stereotyping. To compare Jesus with the crimes of ignorant people who call themselves Christians does not make sense. I hope we can make the world a more peaceful place to live in. We must all resurrect the Christ within. _As the Mandukya Upanisha 1.2 of the Atharva Veda says "Ayam Atma Brahma" (the Self, Ātman is Brahman) likewise we must go beyond the Maya of Nāmārupa (names and forms) and unite as "one" (Advaitam/Brahman). 💞_
