An interesting fact for you as cricket fans is that we play AFL on all the major cricket grounds in Australia - Sydney at SCG, Brisbane at Gabba, Adelaide and Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval, West Coast and Fremantle at Optus Stadium, and of course at the MCG for the majority of the Melbourne teams. Great reaction team! Keep enjoying our great game

Yes, played on cricket fields. Originally to keep cricketers fit during off season. But became professional and specialised.

Yes we still play rugby too, but rugby is a foreign game - not from Australia. AFL is our Game, and it goes back to 1860s, so it’s an old game.

There are amature teams popping up all over the world now and its men and womens teams. There is a strong presence in the Uk as AFL is played on cricket grounds. Ricky Ponting took the game to India when he was coaching an Indian cricket team . Its now becoming very popular with lots of Indian Aussies who also take it back home to India. Of course they like the Richmond Tigers . There are also 150 teams in the US . The game is fast , athletic ,and skillful .

They do not have a drop-in pitch at the Gabba. The Brisbane Lions play on the pitch area and the grounds keeper fixes it all up in the spring time for cricket.

Australian Football began in 1858 in Melbourne as a modification of football rules of the Rugby School in England. As a main aim was to provide exercise for cricket players in the winter 'off season' the Rugby game was modified to reduce the chance of injury. A hand-written version of first laws of 'Australian Football' (which can be seen at Sports Museum at the Melbourne Cricket Ground) date from 1859. Rules of the Melbourne Football Club - May 17, 1859 I. The distance between the Goals and the Goal Posts shall be decided upon by the Captains of the sides playing. II. The Captains on each side shall toss for choice of Goal; the side losing the toss has the kick off from the centre point between the Goals III. A Goal must be kicked fairly between the posts, without touching either of them, or a portion of the person of any player on either side. IV. The game shall be played within a space of not more than 200 yards wide, the same to be measured equally on each side of a line drawn through the centres of the two Goals; and two posts to be called the "kick off posts" shall be erected at a distance of 20 yards on each side of the Goal posts at both ends, and in a straight line with them. V. In case the ball is kicked "behind" Goal, any one of the side behind whose Goal it is kicked may bring it 20 yards in front of any portion of the space between the "kick off" posts, and shall kick it as nearly as possible in line with the opposite Goal. VI. Any player catching the ball "directly" from the foot may call "mark". He then has a free kick; no player from the opposite side being allowed to come "inside" the spot marked. VII. Tripping and pushing are both allowed (but no hacking*) when any player is in rapid motion or in possession of the ball, except in the case provided for in Rule 6. VIII. The ball may be taken in hand "only" when caught from the foot, or on the hop. In "no case" shall it be "lifted" from the ground. IX. When a ball goes out of bounds (the same being indicated by a row of posts) it shall be brought back to the point where it crossed the boundary-line, and thrown in at right angles with that line. X. The ball, while in play, may under no circumstances be thrown. * 'Hacking' was kicking the legs of opponents. Since then Australia Football has had 'Laws' - the current version is here: www.afl.com.au/about-afl/laws-of-the-game

This is not a version of rugby. It is an independent game that was invented in Melbourne in 1858 as a way of keeping cricketers fit over winter. This is why it is played on cricket ovals. The reason for the drop-in pitches is probably less about protecting the pitches and more about improving the quality of the ground for footy. Before drop in pitches, the centre was very hard when it was dry and could result in injuries. After rain, it would become a mud pit which made for poor quality football to watch. Much of the terminology of the game is similar to cricket (umpires rather than referees, laws of the game rather than rules, boundary rather than sideline). After the AFL season was over, they used to play exhibition games overseas, including at the Oval in London. I went to a game there in 1999.

It wasn't until 1879 that the Melbourne Cricket Club allowed football matches to be played regularly on the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Early matches matches of what became 'Australian Football' were played on irregular and rectangular playing areas.

Depending which code of football u follow & what state ur from depends on what code u follow, you'll call both AFL & NRL footy. There's a huge difference between Rugby League & Rugby Union, AFL is a totally different game again just like Soccer. We have 4 codes of footy in our country but the NRL has taken over AFL in participation sport but cricket is our national sport as it's played everywhere in Australia unlike the footy codes
@off1k
@off1k Месяц назад
Umm Participation levels are not even close between Rugby League and Australian Football. Australian Football has more than triple the amount of participants Australia wide. Australian Football is the national sport mate, it's played in every state and was invented in Australia unlike any other team sport. There were Australian Football leagues in NSW and QLD before Rugby League was even a sport.

@user-bi8wp6wy3l
@user-bi8wp6wy3l Месяц назад
@@off1k 100% correct there was Australian football being played here in Newcastle in the 1880s long before rugby league but there was also rugby union as well. Victorian teams used to come to Newcastle to play local sides in the 1890s and the Black Diamond Cup (Newcastle AFL competition) is the oldest continuously played for sporting trophy in Australia. Newcastle was also a foundation club in the first 2 years of the Sydney Rugby League competion(1908/1909) when rugby league first started in Australia. The crowd attendance and participation for AFL is greater but I believe that the NRL is now gaining a bigger television audience because of some clever marketing strategies built around things like the State of Origin series, games played in Las Vegas, Magic round etc.
@off1k
@off1k Месяц назад
@@user-bi8wp6wy3l Television viewership is usually AFL, think the NRL has had higher TV viewing numbers 2 or 3 times in the last 20 years. Last year was better for NRL and iirc 2011 but these numbers also include State of Origins games which many Victorians and AFL fans will watch as well. Also the AFL cut many Saturday games from free to air in many regional areas in the last 3 or 4 years. With the dominance of Rugby and Rugby League in NSW and QLD, a big reason for this was most of the Universities in Sydney and QLD in the late 1800's/early 1900's had British lecturers and pushed Rugby and Rugby style games over Australian Football to assert English Empire dominance. Many Uni's banned Australian Football in these states, can't have some Australian game being more popular than the might of English games now :D

Okay, there is rugby league, rugby union then Aussie rules.... 3 completely different sports all using the ovoid football..... then we also have soccer, using the globe football (called football in the UK etc.) All these sports have very different rules. Rugby league and union probably are the closest to each other. But they have differences as well. lol.... sorry it's all very confusing.... but each are worthy of getting to know :D

It's NOT Rugby, that's like calling Snooker... 8-Ball or Drafts... Chess. AFL or Aussie rules is NOT an adaptation of Rugby like Netball is not Soccer but they both use a round ball & play on an oblong field/court & have to score by getting the ball in the net.

Be careful comparing it to rugby. Most Aussie rules fans are not fond of rugby. It is a vastly different game with the only similarity being the tackling. Rugby is only played mostly in two states, NSW and QLD. Just a regular weekly game last week had 94,000 fans for two teams low on the ladder. Rugby is lucky to get 15 to 20,000 to their match of the day. The reason for the crowds is a game is played at a fast pace, is high scoring and highly entertaining. 🦘🦢

@@user-ul9dv2iv9s that surprised me as that wasnt what I read when I searched earlier so I went back in and did the search again using that question and it definately came back just as you stated. After scratching my head for awhile I changed the search to what is the most watched sport in Australia ? Try it you may be also be surprised with what comes back (I didnt think that I was going crazy). AFL is definately the most supported game as on average they get more than twice as many spectators attending live games but apparently total viewership has become a different story since 2022. I actually went and watched the Dockers and the Demons 3 weeks ago when we were passing through Alice Springs it was first AFL match - great experience but the venue was very ordinary and we left at half time...
