I'm an American fan of the Geelong Cats. What this video doesn't show is the loose ball scrambles. A loose ball in the NFL means someone screwed up, but a loose ball is a common part of the game in the AFL, and very exciting.

Great reaction mate, you didn’t talk through it, you listened. Bounce is badly explained, You have to bounce it sometime “before” running 15 m. Players know if they take a few steps then bounce it will be before 15 m. Score of 120-10-130 means 20 goals x six points each equals 120 points, +10 behinds = 130 total points. (Which decides the game.) One of the most famous final quarters in AFL history is the 2005 semi-final between Sydney and Geelong. You can search for the final five minutes of that if you want to react to it. It is a super exciting finish. If you want to watch a fantastic whole game where the lead kept changing constantly search for the 2012 grand final between Sydney and Hawthorn. You can play the game yourself if you like. In the states there is the USAFL, comprised of 40 different leagues, including the women’s league. Because it’s amateur it’s nowhere near as brutal as our game, and it’s more of a social event for people to play and have barbecues and beers after the game. Other American people reacting have managed to find televised games as they happen live. Obviously a time difference but you can check that out if you want You will be blown away if you check out, “Lance Franklin’s best 23 goals.” Trust me, you will be in awe of this man. Cheers.

Also, the stripes on the grass are typically 12 metres wide, so you can kind of use that as a reference to eyeball it if a player has run too far.

In Australian terms you have to bounce the ball within 15 meters. It is not every 15 meters, it is within. So once you run the full yards without bouncing the opposition gets a free quick.
@PBMS123
@PBMS123 4 месяца назад
more like a free kick The rule is you must bounce at least once every 15m. So yes, as long as you don't further than 15m without bouncing you're fine. Most adult players will bounce the ball every 9-12 steps at a full run. Kids between 10-15 probabaly more like 15

As one brought up on Soccer, I love this game - as well as soccer and Rugby League of course. One of the best rules in AFL is the 50 metre penalty, applied if a player kicks the ball away or otherwise deliberately tries to delay the taking of a free kick. This means the free kick is taken 50 meters down the oval - sometimes right in front of the goal!! It's certainly a rule that I'd love to see taken up by soccer - modified to 10 metres. And I like the method of timekeeping, which is governed completely separately from the ref/umpire, and the clock is stopped the second the ball is out of play and not restarted until it's back in play again. And AFL could do with the adoption of soccer's yellow and red cards.
@rongt859

Bouncing the ball is just a rule to give a defender a chance of catching a ball carrier on a fast break , a basic rule of thumb is 10 steps is about 15 metres or 16 yards

You in the USA have a local league called the USAFL get yourself to your local games maybe give it a go yourself. AFL is played by both genders and all ages its older than your NFL and I think Americans would just eat the game up if they where exposed to it more its got high scoring its fast moving and has some hard hits what's not to like. Lastly come on down under and see a game first hand there is nothing like being in a big crowed and feeling the thrill of the game.

WAFL...AFL players can run up to 18klms about (10 miles) a game ..you got to be superfit ...a normal training night 10 x 400 meters then 10 x 50 meter sprints then circle passing kicking hand passing 200 meter circle then Indian file 20 players joging last one has to sprint past all to get to front then he leads about 30 minutes of this ..non stop..then one on one chase down 50 meter kick against your opponent fighting tackling to get ball back to kicker and lots more drills can be 3 hours of intensive training ...2x per week + match ..so you have probally ran 50klms that week half at full speed... sometimes a run down the roads would be ten klms at training .

The '16 yards per bounce' rule is measured typically by gauging it. Its not like NFL where the chains woud come out and they'd stop play to say "did he go 17 yards or was it 15?". Its all done by eye really and steps. Its an average and all players, umpires and even fans get a feel for when someone is running past that mark.

How do you know you've run 16 yards ? ... You mark out 16 yards on the ground then count the steps you take to get to the end. You get a run up to hit the pace by the time you get to the first mark though. The umpires would know how many paces it takes and count the players paces to penalise them by giving the ball to the opposing team if they take a couple too many paces.

They use yards to explain this to American audience. Here it is actually 15 metres. The metric system is so basic you can actually sense when they have over done it, give or take a metre. If someone does something spectacular or brave, they will tend to give an extra metre or two. If you are flat footed or under no pressure, you will sometimes see they get penalised just before said distance. Sounds crazy, but it’s what makes the crowds electric. Constant shouting and yelling at eachother over who had the greatest injustice. Good comparison is how the travel rule in the NBA seems pretty loose since the end of the 90’s. Interpretations change, same for the NFL :) frustrating in the case of the NBA. Makes it harder to claim GOAT. Keep it keeping it real brother.
