I got my blue boy for $35 in Australia 10 years ago. He was orphaned and came to me at 3 weeks old so I hand raised him,he thinks he’s human. He has free run of my house, loves going for drives and is well known at the local beach and cafes.

I wouldn't worry about the biting. It takes a couple of months but if you firmly tell your bird no and walk away from the bird and ignore it they get the idea pretty quickly they can't bite you. It took me about 2 months to train my macaw not to bite and he's really good about it now. I also got an Amazon a few months ago and he was a biter when I got him but he's pretty much stopped. So with good training you can stop biting pretty easily with a exotic bird. be firm but gentle. consistent.

I had a female Indian and a male African Ringneck. Avian vet doubted they would mate. Wrong. First clutch had 1 egg. He lived 30 years. Second clutch had 4 eggs. All hatched. Two females, two males. Females lived to be 26 & 27 years. I still have the two males from that clutch. They just turned 29 in August 2020. The third clutch had only one egg. Born handicapped. Surgery at 2 weeks. Slept with me every night if his life. Only lived eight years, but he had the BEST life.

When you said $500-$1100 i was stunned omg. I ended up buying my year old female grey Indian ringneck for around $200 which included her cage, toys and feeding bowls (the cage is pretty similar to the one you showed in this video) and I know this is a really good deal since her old owners wanted to get rid of her fast but even the baby green ringnecks at my local pet shop are only $90. Maybe it’s because of the area you live in but it really shocked me that they were that expensive near you!!!

I am getting mine in six weeks, which is why I’m watching this video and I’ve been spending the last eight months bonding with her at the pet store. The only reason why I haven’t picked her up yet is because she’s expensive but I just talked to the pet store today and said that I think it would actually be detrimental to this bird to go to somebody else because we bonded. They agreed to let me do a payment plan and I get to take her home as soon as she’s paid off and I can’t wait. I’m going to visit her today.

Even I have a ringneck which accidentally fell from it's best during a storm and since then it's with me and he is very talkative . I don't know why he still bites me , I had him when he was barely a month old I guess.

After weeks of research and months of saving I bought my first IRN just a few days ago. She’s 6 months old so her favourite food is very much my fingers and she hasn’t yet built up the courage to go more than a metre from her cage. I love her colouration as she is blue/violet on her body, has splashed of greenish yellow and has a yellowish green head. They definitely need lots of attention, lots of toys and since she’s a baby, lots of patience.

PREACH. Idk what it is with people overseas mistreating birds like this. The rat community grew out of this, most people now know that a human will never substitute same-race companions, but the bird community is just to stuck in "it bonds with me". It's a shame Of course your bird bonds with you if you are the only option. Wild parrots live in HUGE colonies and those that don't live in groups until the mate for live. The NEED other birds, it's literally all they do, socialize, fly and make noise. In case you didn't know, Germany actually has wild ringneck parakeet colonies, that grew from escaped pets.

I've had parakeets and a senegal, and my ringnecks have been VERY different from my other birds. It has taken time and patience to build a relationship of trust with them and to create boundaries. The main thing is to never force a bird. It is very hard to earn back their trust... try to make your interactions positive, rewarding good behaviors instead of punishing bad behaviors. Punishing birds doesn't work. It took probably a solid year to really win over my two ringnecks (maybe it was slower because I had two instead of one "immersed" in human culture), but now I have two very curious and social boys who rarely if ever bite and are friendly to just about anyone they meet once they have a chance to observe for a bit and get comfortable.

Awesome video- a couple of things:birds need 12-14 hours uninterrupted sleep per night. Many people use a sleeper cage in another room (my IRN has a sleeper cage in the laundry). Food wise, a good pellet like Tops pellets are great at night time. In the morning they should have what is often known as “chop”. It’s basically heaps of veggies, legumes, and grains. Seed and fruit should be reserved for treats. They really shouldn’t have much seed- it is full of fat and can cause nastys like fatty liver disease. They’re an amazing pet. Recommend Birdtricks RU-vid channel.

Hey Brother, very nice video for first-timers and I like that you hard-sold the amount of attention they absolutely require, this is no Finch, not even a Cockatiel, in terms of independence, they need playtime with you, time on your shoulder/chest, all the toys in the world won't replace the fact that someone in the house will become Zazu's mate unless you get a female. Not many species will actually choose a human mate. One minor correction, ALL wild Indian Ringnecks are Green, the only ones in the wild that are other colors were from being lost by owners. The unique colors were artificially introduced by human breeders. Nice work.

Bird Tricks is a great channel to learn to look after parrots properly. Please don't feed you Indian Ringneck seeds and nuts like this person says, they should only be fed as treats. Primarily veges and pellets should be fed, with some grains and beans (watch Bird Tricks for more info). (I have had a ringneck for 15 years, I've learnt a lot over the years)

+1 for Birdtricks. FWIW pellets have some seeds but they also have a tonne of other things. Their diet should be like 50-60% chop (check out the Birdtricks explanation for what should go in it. Make it in bulk and freeze it), 30-40% pellet and 10% or so nuts and seeds (which are given as a reward). Also don’t take the IRNs bluffing phase personally. They can get super hormonal as well in spring. Mine is just settling down now about 2 months into spring in Australia.

Not "can cohab" They live in flocks and you should totally get another. It's illegal to keep them alone in several countries, for that reason. 😁 They should absolutely be kept at least two. It's important for their mental health. Birds that are kept alone are more prone to plucking, also they start to see you as their partner. But you can't fullfill their sexual requirements and that can lead to sexual frustration and also plucking and depression. Some even self harm to the point that they're bloody. If your little ringneck is hand reared I reccommend giving him a partner as soon as possible. I will link some research down below as soon as I have access to a computer. Also, since you live in canada, I don't know where in canada you live but if you live more up north, or even the middle you should have a UV lamp for the winter. 💜 Edit: I'm so happy you haven't had his wings clipped though. ❤

Untame parrots definitely need to live in large aviaries with others to be happy, but introducing a new parrot to a normal sized human home with a tame parrot who is bonded to a human and already gets all the mental and physical stimulation and social interaction they need, risks one killing the other (especially if one or both are Indian Ringneck females) and doesn't usually add to their overall well-being as two randomly paired parrots often merely tolerate each other anyway. It can work if you do lots of research and do it all right and manage to pair up birds who actually like each other, but it often CAUSES happy parrots to for example start plucking, to feel sexually frustrated as one bird wants the other but not vice versa, to be jealous, to guard each other so much they begin to hate their humans and refuse to ever leave their cage again, and more.
@aurorasurrealis1032
@aurorasurrealis1032 4 года назад
@@compulsiverambler1352 No parrot gets the social interaction they NEED from a human. I'm sorry but that is a falsehood to make us feel better about keeping parrots alone. Yes you are right, you should not pair a female parrot of ANY kind with another female. Although there are cases of gay birds that only want a partner of the same sex. Introducing a partner can be a hard task but it's a task we should absolutely go through. Because we need to keep the birds happy and let them have as much natural behaviour in our homes as possible. It's a privilege to keep them and if we keep them we should do it right! Birds are NOT EASY To keep the right way but they get thrown around in the pet trade because of how smart/cute and social they are. Parrots can indeed start to guard eachother especially in breeding season and when they guard eggs and young. But if you train properly with your parrots you will not experience that. You will be a trusted individual, a part of their flock but not a replacement for other birds. Because it is IMPOSSIBLE for us to replace another bird and keep our birds without faulty behaviour if we are the only thing interacting with it. Especially if we work during the day. Birds are even more social than us having their partner around almost 24/7.

@compulsiverambler1352 4 года назад
The scream is usually a problem for those in the same room, not neighbours, as the tone is painful but it's not as loud as it feels like it is when you're up close. Lots of IRNs live in flats whose neighbours never hear the screaming, including mine. :)

My male blue IRN is 7. They normally start developing their ring at around 2 years. You should feed them lots of vegetables & only a little fruit. You also need to be careful about having other species of birds with IRNs. If they are raised together that's fine but they will often get jealous if you get another parrot after some years. I got a Conure 2 years after having my IRN & they don't get along. The Conure picks on the IRN & as a consequence he has become a little aggressive. You are right that they require lots of attention. My IRN cost $120.00 as he is a blue. In Australia only the IRNs with colour mutations are between $500-$1000.

Here in Paris (France not Texas) we've had a breeding populationin our parks and gardens for more then twenty years and in London, where I'm from, the 'wild' population has been growing since the 1960s. They're enchanting chattering away in the trees but they are out-competing our native songbirds.

One of the sellers there had a completely green love bird and I fell in love with it. 5€ for him. It wasn't a love bird. He lived for 8 years. I miss him. Funnily enough he was in constant competition with my older cockateel for my atention. She "talked" he only "scoffed". Both of them just wanted to be on my shoulder.

I was a bit surprised to hear how expensive these birds have gotten, but I'm kind of glad. I regret that I bought one, somewhat impulsively, when I was in my early twenties. I think I paid about $30 for it. It was not a good choice for me at the time and if it had been more expensive, I might have re-considered. Parrots just don't make good pets for most people and far too many people get one without really considering just what a commitment it is.

You might also want to mention that birds also need a wide spectrum or birdie light to make sure that they get their vitamin D3 during the winter. During the summer when it's nice outside they should be outside in the bright sunlight for about 15 minutes to a half hour. This is true for people too except for weekend take D3 supplements. Without D3 it's difficult for birdie to absorb many nutrients including calcium. Make sure your booty is properly clipped but the best thing to do is to simply flight train them or put them in a harness
