Places to eat at in Mumbai: 1. Leopold Cafe (area - Colaba causeway in Mumbai) - *Nice beer, barbecues, nice desserts.* 2. Bade Miyan - Late night place - is open till 3 am or so (area - near Taj hotel in Mumbai) *A late night place, patrons eat in their cars, but has a seating area as well. Famous for their wraps, Tikkas, Tandooris & barbecued stuff.* 3. Pancham Puriwala - (area - fort in Mumbai) - *5 types of puris(bread), savory dishes & desserts.* 4. Sardar Pav Bhaaji - (area - Tardeo in Mumbai) - *The best and the most buttery Paav Bhaaji on Planet Earth.* 5. Elco Pani puri - (area - Bandra west in Mumbai) - *One of the best Pani puris in town. India is a diverse country These are mostly vegeterian Gujarati dishes , in the northern & western part of India mostly vegetarian street foods available...in the eastern & southern part of India cities like Kolkata , Hyderabad, Lucknow , Chennai, Gawahati , Bhubaneswar, Vizag, Kochi, etc you can get lots of non veg street foods also ...

It's a misconception. You can get a vadapav for Rs 10 as well as for Rs 50. There is so much diversity in term of costs. If it was as costly as you claim people from all over the country would not be flocking in Mumbai for a bright future.
