Indiana fireworks accident: 7 people wounded; 10 cars and 4 homes damaged

You can only buy 1.3 legally with a state or federal permit and those permits aren't just walk up and buy one any time you want and this applies to every single state. You have to apply and meet certain requirements for storage and a proper location for setting them off and all kinds of oddball things. So, no, you cannot just walk up and purchase 1.3 legally without that permit anywhere in the united states and especially not just set them off in front of your house legally.

@@hestheMaster yeah, 6" IN LENGTH but they are still only 1.75 Inch in diameter. That tube is for a large 6" DIAMETER display shell which is regulated more harshly and is not a consumer firework. You need permits and licenses for them and those would never be issued for use in a neighborhood. The ones using them and the ones who sold it to them are in some deep shit after the investigation.

The stars in them can be quite large, hard and fast moving, somewhat similar to 2x4 piece of wood shot through the brick wall. Seeing daredevils light such shells by hand... it gives me the creeps. Seen fair share of fireworks failures to know better. Several types of mishaps can occur (and combine): - defective/wrong fuse - shell can launch immediately when lit - lift charge fails - shell explodes in tube or on the ground nearby - too much lift/wrong lift powder/damaged launch tube - launch tube may explode + shell exploding on wrong altitude/ground - internal delay fuse fails - shell explodes immediately on lift-off or completes the flight and falls back to the ground some distance away (may or may not explode) - complete dud, parts missing from the shell - tube falls over - creates a very exiting roulette cannon, aiming wherever it points to, possibly at considerable distance + shell explosion radius.

Given that 10s of thousands of Hoosiers have been blowing them off in neighborhoods across the state for decades, with very few serious accidents like this, I'd say they're pretty safe.

In a residence area packed with houses like that, no areal displays should be shot off. There's too much flammable material in the area, and way too many gas tanks if something does go up in flames.

That was a 5" display shell mortar tube. That is 100% illegal for consumers in all 50 states. It's 1.3g ATF regulated product. Those people bought them illegally and no one with a license would be dumb enough to use display shells on a residential street.

It was a low break the top of the tube was the only part damaged.. If it were put in upside down there wouldn't be a tube left... it went soon as it left the tube

My little town of 2000 people allow fireworks 10 days before, and one day after the 4th. So, as I'm writing this, on July 5th, I'm listening to fireworks, still. And with it being the weekend, I can about guarantee it'll go on for a couple more days.

that's a bit much lady, half an acre is plenty if you're careful and central with it. i live in California in the "red areas" (ridiculous politics, what a joke) and there's a fair amount of plants of various sorts,we usually move and spray the yard down with water first,keep hoses on,keep fire extinguisher next to you, never light fireworks near other ones or otherwise have an ignirion source anywhere near the other fireworks, that's how we always did it,zero issues.

That shell is illegal everywhere in the U.S. without a license. They will be charged with a felony soon or used to find the supplier and throw them in federal prison.

Even with acreage, you can start devastating fires. Stupid tradition that escalates every year. People drink, handle explosives, have kids handle explosives - what could go wrong?

That is why just about every billboard on the tristate toll road is advertising fireworks stores from Indiana. As reported, it seems that nothing was done illegally, in this instance. But it is under investigation. Anytime you work with fireworks or other explosives, something has the potential to go wrong. There is always that risk. Unfortunately, this is one time when something went wrong.

Are there restrictions related to housing density / type of firework?

There may be some sort of regulation regarding limits to the amount of fireworks, people in the vicinity, etc that maybe doesn't normally concern the average consumer. It would make sense, else people could seriously mess some shit up under the guise of an innocent firework show.

There are several classes of fireworks, ranging from consumer grade (1.4G) and display grade fireworks (1.3G). Anyone can buy, store and use consumer grade fireworks. You need a stated and federal license/permit for display grade fireworks. I don't know for sure, but it looks like these folks: A) had display grade fireworks - looking at the tube that they showed in the video and damage radius. B) were either careless in the handling and igniting the fireworks or had improperly store/staged stuff. I've seen too many injuries from improperly store and used fireworks. too many stories from too many years on EMS during the 4th.
