Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade (1989) Retrospective / Review

Last Crusade used to be my favorite, but while I don't like it any less I prefer Raiders now. Not by a whole lot though.

I'm sorry for your loss. That's how I feel when I watch this movie as well. Last Crusade is my personal favorite due to the bond and chemistry between The Jones's. Seeing how much was lost between them makes me want to value and appreciate the time with my father everyday. Again I'm sorry for your loss. If you both started over again before tragedy struck and you both were happy, then the love will never leave. Hold that close to you

Of course not. I also love temple of doom and so do many. I just dont rank it as high. I also enjoy Crystal Skull (to an extent)

Good practical effect are timeless! Combined with exellent acting and directing and you get golden films like these.

That's an inside joke my family uses frequently.

Recently did a back to back of them and they still hold up. It is impressive (tried to watch Temple of Doom, my first in the Indiana Jones movies, and I cringe every time Willie comes in).

Between Raiders and Last Crusade, my favorite is Temple of Doom. HAHA get it?

I don't hate Crystal Skull by any measure but if it had never existed this would have been a perfect send-off.

Was the TV show really that bad? I heard it was one of the most expensive ever made, the equivalent of Game of Thrones now.

Fun thing is, when I watched the Terminator movies recently I stopped at 2 in part because Sarah Connor says "it's over" at the end, and then I stopped Indy at this movie because of the last shot. Although it was also partially because watching these movies feels kind of exhausting.

Hope they don't make a fifth...I think, very unfortunately, Harrison Ford is too old to play this character.

As much as I love the first one, this one captures Indy in the best light, in my opinion.

Agreed! Back in '89, I thought the father-son relationship was bullshit. Now that my father and I are about the same ages as Indy and his dad, I find my father and I have the same kind of relationship!

I think Harrison should've done more Indy movies in the 80s and 90s. There should've been 10 of these films out already. It would've been so great. We missed out on his adventures in the 1940s.

For the life of me. I don't remember this movie in 1989. I remember batman and ghostbusters very well but not Indiana Jones and the last crusade. For some reason I keep thinking it came out during the mid 1990s like 95 96.

I absolutely agree. Kind of sad it was over but you knew that their adventures would continue, we just wouldn't see them. I felt the same way at the end of Return Of The Jedi.

Honestly Dial of Destiny was worse I could accept Indy settling down with Marion but....alas

Haha, thank you for this comment. So true if seems that anytime they worked together, whenever Spielberg’s view wasn’t taken, things went astray. In Crystal Skull it seems Lucas got more of wishes followed.

yeah Lucas is good with fantasy stuff more than anything. Spielberg can do both though fantasy and more grounded stuff.

The lesson here is don't let Lucas have any input in the story. He's an untalented hack and the success of Star Wars was down to his wife and other people's ideas.

Yeah, it did actually. It was a fully fleshed out object in a LOT of ways and really high production value while also acting as a sneaky form of copy protection, since you needed the clues in the diary to get past the Venice library stained glass window puzzle, which as I recall, was randomized and thus you had to refer to what was essentially a code guide in the diary (or I could have just been terrible at that puzzle, since I remember getting stuck on it a LOT since I was like, seven years old and it was hard to wrap my young mind around). Mind you, this was a 2nd form of subtle copy protection, as there was a more overt form with this sort of red gelled "look through this lens on a page of random numbers to reveal the access code" form of physical copy protection too. Honestly, back in the day, I'm pretty sure half of the cost of a Lucasfilm game was in the physical stuff, not just the game. Indy came with the grail, the secret magic lens thing, a more standard game manual, like 6 floppy disks and then all your standard Lucasfilm merchandise brochures (you could buy an Indy hat!) and LucasArts' weird kind of newsletter announcement brochure with a Sam and Max comic in it, all in a big high quality cardboard box.

Same. I remember watching Last Crusade at the cinema when it was released thirty years ago, and watching it on the big screen still remains one of the most enjoyable cinematic experiences I've had.

Hmm, I also saw it in the cinema... but dubbed into Czech, my native language. I was disappointed. It lacked humor for me. Then I saw the original. :-) So many jokes were lost in the translation. :-) I love this film.

1989 was a golden time. In fact, 1989-1991 was three of the best years in cinema.

I liked the 4th one. The story of aliens in early human history always intrigues me and I'm glad they did an Indy film about it. I just didn't care for the cgi in the jungle. Mutt William's swinging on the vines like Tarzan was a bit too much.

ladyretro Made as Oliver explains in this video but the actual models of the face and head were created using radio control suction cups which would pull the skin into the head to make the skin appear like it was aging and wrinkling. Fantastically creative stuff, scared the hell out of me too!!

So damn clever! I'd get behind the sofa when I knew it was coming. After Raiders' melting heads it should have been a breeze to watch but nope!

ladyretro I think the Thriller video scared me as a kid too, and when I watched Last Crusade it was around the same time and as horrible as it sounds the puppet kinda looks like Michael Jackson for a few frames from Thriller, its the way that the head goes back and the eyes open.

DarkLordSaxon, just out of curiosity, did the ILM artist mention how long it took to create the melting head and ageing effects (for Raiders and Last Crusade)? It would've been fascinating to hear his anecdotes/memories of his experiences. You have a great channel by the way - your Ghostbusters: Trip to New York video is very cool :)

Yes, heard of it & seen parts of it as it was featured on local news in my area some time ago. I admire their dedication, but the project looked terrible. They could probably have made a decent film if they'd put as much effort into making something original.

Flayne009 Absolutely. I consider TLC to be the weakest film for this reason. Say what you will about TOD but at least that film had the balls to completely go out on a limb.

I'd even consider the first forty minutes of Crystal skull to be more entertaining and daring than TLC.

Tod is awesome ! ! The other two are just a little more awesome.

It's a lot more tonally consistent than Temple which alternates between dark subject matter and goofy schlock.

All that time travel really messed him up.

The problem is while originally movies and tv was nearly equal squareness, movies started going wider and wider while tv wasn't following suit for generations. Now tv is finally playing along.

Wide-screen analogue TVs were just coming onto the market.

Temple of Doom is a personal favourite of mine, I like the dark turn it took, the sets and action were phenomenal and it made the best use of john williams score. My only complaint was Kate Kapshaw's character.

@ANTMAN I used to think that as well at one time. The thing is... not only it's the action from Raiders albeit less of it; now you also have dad and son dichotomy throw into the mix which works really well onscreen
