That's the late River Phoenix as young Indiana Jones. He's Joaquin Phoenix's older brother and was one of the hottest young actors of the 1980s and early 90s before he died tragically from a drug overdose in 1993 at the age of 23. Many of the film projects that ended up going to Leonardo DiCaprio were originally intended for River.

Raiders of the Lost Ark was great because it was the first one and was a great adventure, but 'The Last Crusade' is my favorite because of the blend of action and comedy. It isn't too heavy on 1 or the other and balances really well. The comedy of it feels very natural and nothing feels forced. Hands down my favorite Indy flick, time for some trivia. The dog at the Jones’ house is a reference to George Lucas’ Alaskan Malamute, Indiana. In his original script for Raiders, he named the lead character Indiana Smith after his dog. Steven Spielberg asked him to change the name to Jones. The dog would sit in the passenger seat of his pick up truck and was the inspiration for another furry co-pilot, Chewbacca. Harrison Ford has a noticeable scar on his chin, he got it in a car accident as a younger man. In order to explain where he got it, the scene with the lion has River Phoenix getting the same scar due to his inexperience with the whip. The actor playing Hitler signs his name with his right hand, Hitler was actually left handed. Donovan shoots Henry Sr with a German pistol that had, at the time the movie had been set, only just been introduced to the German army, the Walther PPK. It would later go on to be the signature firearm of a certain British spy, James Bond, first played by Sean Connery himself. The original James Bond, shot with James Bond’s own gun.

@Teddy Ray you're greatly mistaken. "Dr. No" (1962) was the first James Bond film. It starred Sean Connery as 007. After doing 5 films in 5 years Connery left the series and George Lazenby took over to do "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (1969). The film was hugely criticized, primarily because it didn't star Sean Connery. I thought it was excellent, if a little long. Time has proven me correct and it's generally considered one of the better Bond outings. Connery agreed to come back for one more film for 1971, "Diamonds Are Forever", and then the role went to Roger Moore.

A bit of trivia: the Jones house is in a little town called Antonito, Colorado. That town is one of the endpoints of the Cumbres & Toltec Narrow Gauge Railroad, which served as the circus train in the opening scene. I've ridden the train twice now; it runs through some wild and beautiful country between Antonito and Chama, New Mexico. The best part (other than discovering the Indy connection) is that it's so slow that you can get amazing scenic photos without trying too hard.

The Malamute we see at the start of the film is the one Indy is named after & is a nod to George Lucas’s own dog. During the time when Lucas was writing Star Wars, his own Malamute would sit next to him in the front seat of his car whenever they went out for a drive. This hairy co-pilot Lucas had, gave him the inspiration for Chewbacca!! The boat chase, wasn’t actually filmed in Venice. It was shot at Tilbury Docks near London; virtually all the studio shooting for this film….as with the previous two films was carried out at Pinewood Studios.

A couple of fun facts about River Phoenix playing Young Indiana. One, Harrison Ford suggested River for the part because he enjoyed working with River on the film "Mosquito Coast" and thought River represented him best as a teenager. Also when it came to approaching to playing a Young Indiana, River described it as he wasn't trying to mimic Harrison Ford the grown man he is, but do it in a way that he would've done it as a teenager.

Supposedly, a previous draft of the script made it clear that the archaeologist/adventurer that gives Indy his hat in the flashback scene where he's played by River Phoenix is Abner Ravenwood, Marion's dad, and that's how he and Indy first met before he became his mentor when he studied archaeology. I suppose the filmed version doesn't intend that to be the case since he seems to be more of a mercenary type, but I never could stop seeing that guy as Abner from the moment I found out about that.

For example, I loved "The Highlander" -- the story, the characters, especially the Highlands of Scotland. However, the sequel was crap, 109 minutes of torture. Around the middle of that film, Sean Connery shows up for about 10 minutes. Those 10 minutes were gold. Sean Connery is magic. He saves a bad movie (10 minutes, anyway), and makes a good movie great.

Excellent reaction! I love watching your responses to movies. So much fun! Raiders is amazing and really brought back the genre of pulp adventures and gave them new life. Last Crusade is equally amazing, even though it is very different from the original as it is much more of a character-driven adventure movie than the celebration of pulp adventure flicks. And JRD as Sallah in each of them makes the movie that much better.

21:54. This scene was filmed in the Taberna's desert, in Almería (Spain). At that time, the temperature was very high and Sean Connery decided to shoot that shot...without pants!! Greetings from Colombia, beautiful girl!

Great job Addie. This was my favorite of the 3 as well. If you want another Grail movie I highly recommend Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Keep up the great work.

Bird strikes are a big problem for aeroplanes. Bird strikes caused both engines to fail during takeoff on an Airbus A320 commercial jet in New York and the result was 'The Miracle on the Hudson'. That event was a little after the time of Dr Henry Jones, Sr using them to bring down a P-2 in Indy 3 though.

You might want to check out the YT clips of Spielberg and Ford honoring Connery at his AFI Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony. Pierce Brosnan's speech honoring Connery at the same ceremony is well regarded. As for the name Indiana Jones, Lucas got the inspiration from the movie Nevada Smith. Lucas changed the name to Indiana Smith (Indiana was the name of Lucas' dog). It was later changed to Jones.

Fun one, Addie! 😃 Yeah, this is my favorite Indiana Jones movie too. Love all the Dad & Junior vibes, LOL! Pairing Harrison Ford & Sean Connery was a stroke of genius.

Man, River Phoenix as young Indiana couldn’t have been better cast. He even had his run down, kinda crazy legs down hill. We’d hoped it would be the beginning of a young Indiana telling his back story in full. He was such a good actor but sadly passed away young.

Not to detract from this film (my favorite of the franchise so far, and a great reaction too), but if you liked Sean Connery in this then you might also like Highlander. He's not the lead role, but still an impressive and entertaining performance.

Hey Addie, Another Fun Fact: The scene where the teenage Indy cracked the whip and got himself in the chin, that was setup as a plot device to explain the real-life scar on Harrison Ford's chin

This is kind of the perfect sequel. Almost everything about it is "the first film, but better," something a lot of sequels try and fail at. A lot of the story beats are the same: Indy on an adventure at the beginning, then back to teaching class before getting sucked into another adventure, and even the treasures that drive the plot are similar, the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail, both important in Christian mythology. Even Nazis again as the bad guys. But it's what the film adds to the formula that really helps, in first exploring Indy's young days, then his strained and estranged relationship with his father, and how the adventure helps them heal and come to like and respect each other again. Gotta say though, kinda surprised you missed when Henry Sr. says he knew Elsa was a Nazi "because she talks in her sleep."

The only issue I have with the flashback young Indy scene is that I can't see how he went from someone who cared about archaeology to the opportunistic treasure hunter he was in 'Temple of Doom'. I can believe his experiences in that brought him back to serious archaeology and teaching as he does in 'Raiders...' and this one, but what happened between this and 'Temple...' to make him the very thing he objects to in this scene

If anyone wants to see more of River Phoenix, he was in a movie called "Sneakers". It wasn't a block buster, but a decent techno spy action film with many good actors. It would make a pretty good movie to react to
