Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) First Time Watching! Movie Reaction! 

From what I read years ago, the guy that played the evil priest Mola Ram was extremely grateful for this movie. He said his film career in India was going nowhere and when this came out he became a legend and was in very high demand as a villain. He just had to keep shaving his head which he didn’t mind. I also find it interesting that i think Ford said he was one of the nicest guys he’s ever worked with.

Loved Indy's friendship with Short Round. One of the best sidekicks to an action protagonist.

Kate Capshaw (who plays Willie Scott)apparently said to Spielberg “I think I’m screaming too much. Wouldn’t she have stopped by now?” He insisted it was to be a running gag and audiences would get it. Speaking of which, her and Steven Spielberg would eventually get Married in 1991, and are still happily married to this day.

Even before he became super famous from his incredible resurgance, Ke Huy Quan had a huge part in making this film so great. He carried a lot of weight here, for a young actor. He was hilarious, good with his one liners, showed so much confidence and commitment, just amazing. The 3 main characters were really a great team.

Surprisingly the craft inflating out of a plane at a high distance was tested by the Mythbusters and found to be actually plausible as their dummy did not register a high impact. Who knew.

This one was my absolute favorite of the series. Willie was totally unprepared for this adventure and the actress played the role so well. Short round was hilarious. And there were so many comedic scenes here. It’s totally the best.

This may seem like an odd compliment but I wanted to thank you guys for having so much confidence in the growth of your channel. There are a lot of channels that I see (reactions and otherwise) that get completely swept up in algorithm-baiting, begging their viewers to like the video, leave a comment, hit subscribe, ring the notification bell, and even going so far as to interrupt the video to ask again and again. Incredibly, I even see some that pull up statistics about how many non-subscribers watched their previous video, shaming them for not subscribing as if that constituted some form of theft! I applaud the self-assurance and professionalism of saying "Links are in the description. And with that, let's get into the movie!" and completely leaving it at that. The brevity of your self-promotion does not go unnoticed or unappreciated by your fans. Whether you ask us to or not, we will keep coming back to see your great content!

This is my favorite Indy movie. It's a nonstop thrillride and I love it. Yes, I even like Willie. Does she scream too much? Yes. But some of her scenes are also hilarious. The bedroom scene where they both wait for each other is one of my favorite scenes, especially when Indy comes in and she is like "Please, be gentle with me." LOL

The miniature work in the minecart chase scene is incredible, it’s legitimately hard to tell when it switches back and forth.

In my opinion, The Last Crusade is the best of the trilogy and is my personal favorite. I can’t wait to see y’all’s reaction to it.

People have got to stop telling the reactors which movies are better than which. Let them form their own expectations.

Since I was a kid, 26 now, I’ve always believed all 3 were all equally awesome, for different reasons.

They tried the inflatable boat parachute on Mythbusters -- and it worked! The dummy did break his pelvis, if I remember right.

Though it may seem random that they ended up at the village that needs Indy's help, the movie sets up well the notion that it really wasn't random, but an answer to the prayers from the villagers for someone to help them

The escape scene by Mola Ram is by far the best escape scene. Man just rolls outta there all while doing an evil laugh. Truly amazing.

Given the significant public outcry over the fairly gruesome scenes in “Temple of Doom” and “Gremlins," as well as other PG-rated films of the time, Steven Spielberg spoke to the MPAA about creating a new intermediate rating between PG and R that his films often found themselves on. The MPAA agreed, and the PG-13 rating was introduced.

It was only set a year before Raiders. And my understanding it was done to explain why he’s not with Marion since Marion is supposed to be his one real love interest. It was easier to have a temporary love interest here and set the movie as a prequel than have it be a sequel and have everyone be disappointed that Marion and Indy are no longer together.

My favorite factoid about how this movie developed was that George Lucas was coming up with the story in the middle of a nasty divorce - hence the scene of a man's heart being torn out of his chest and shown to him. The darkness in the film came from that and Lucas admitted later that he might have gone a bit far due to his state of mind at the time. Yeeesh! Fair enough. 😅

This movie took place a year before Raiders. You can see the difference in Indiana first trading artifacts for diamonds with gangsters. He does what he does for “fortune and glory”, a selfish motivation but through the events of the film freeing the children and returning the stone to the village , Indy grows as a character and into the hero we know and love from Raiders.

I absolutely loved Willie's character. I got a kick out of the gags Willie's character brought to the table. It was great on the big screen. All of us in the audience laughed our butt's off at willie running and screaming all over the campsite while Indi and Short round were playing cards together. Each movie brings a different personality to the table. Even in the third we have a different woman with a different personality. I will say the third is my absolute favorite". This is my wife's favorite. My favorite is the original. We agree our second favorite is The Last Crusade. Everyone has their favorite, and the bottom line is they are all entertaining, full of action, suspense, some sort of phobia for the audience, and always a clear bad guy.

Temple of Doom was my favourite when I was a kid, probably because of Short Round - made it seem possible that I could have an exciting adventure because this kid on the screen was having one. Last Crusade is probably my favourite now, followed by Raiders, but I still love Temple of Doom because it is just a lot of fun and has that nostalgia factor for me.

I like how they didn't even notice Dan Aykroyd helping them get on the plane in the beginning. 😆

Great reaction guys! Raiders is the most well made film, but this one is the most "pulpy", exactly what Indy Jones was meant to be an homage to...and I love every over the top, sensationalized minute of it!

I understand why this is a lot of people's least favorite of the original three, but it's my all time favorite Indiana Jones. I always found Willie to be more funny than annoying and also feel that her reactions to the things that are happening feel closer to how an actual real person would react in that situation. The thing I love the most about it though is how much darker it is than the rest of the movies. Like this was my horror movie when I was little kid and too scared to watch actual horror. I love it. Since a kid and even now, my favorite Indiana Jones movie. It is an incredible rollercoaster fun ride, with dark tones. And i said it before and i will say again, i love Kate Capshaw's performance: see is setting an homage to the scream queens of the 40's movies.

The actor who played Short Round said that Harrison Ford taught him how to swim (during down time at the hotel they stayed at). So cool! The 3rd is absolutely my favorite, on all levels - but Raiders is so iconic, it's hard to not make that my #1. PS People were crying out for a Short Round and Indy movie before the Crystal Skull was made. After seeing him in Everything, Everywhere All at Once, I'm SO sad this didn't happen :(

Dude she's the opposite of Marion which makes it awesome. And Cate or Kate Capshaw is Stephen Spielberg's wife. I love her in this movie. She's so funny in my opinion. Somebody has to give hers some props.

I never quite got why it's a consistent opinion that this film is bad, or not as good--I personally think all of the first three are tons of fun. And as to your comment that everything here was coincidental, that's what I LOVE about the film, it feels like a real adventure in that sense, they stumble onto a village and are like hey, guess we're doing this--that's what adventures are! Love the double face-palm when Willie bumps into the button again! Short round, the opening sequence, and the scene with spike/crushing/room/trap made Temple of doom my favorite. I think a lot of people don't like Willie, but I thought her character and the dynamic between the three was great

My favorite of the trilogy.

Temple of Doom blew my 9 year old mind when i saw it in the theater. I was forever hooked. The music, animals, adventure, spells, and the score!!! Oh my blessed heart, the score! One of my favorite films. The first trilogy is so good. When you rewatch the 4th movie you’ll realize how bad it really is compared to this. PS. Those are fruit bats, one of Earth largest flying creatures. They come out at sunrise & sunset since they don’t use sonar to hunt since they mostly eat fruit. There’s many different species of fruit bats in Indonesia, Congo, Philippines, Amazon & Madagascar.

I never seen any of the Indiana Jones films but judging by this and the first one, I can see where naughty dog got the inspiration for the Uncharted series

Willie is actually the more realistic sidekick. We would all be having her same reactions. She does progress as the film wears on.

One of my favorite parts in this movie is "Willy...we are going to die!!!"

Still my favorite movie in the series! It's just so dark and wild. Spielberg and Lucas were ballsy with this one.

As someone who was a teen growing up in the 80's, best part of seeing this movie one night back in '84, was the next year by winning an arcade tournament by dominating the Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom arcade game by Atari. Great times back then.

I saw this film during its original theatrical run. My date and I were in a over packed theater. I remember laughing so hard during the dinner scene. Loved this film.

Raiders takes place in 1936. Indy is slightly less experienced here. This was the first Indiana Jones movie that almost my whole family attended in the theater (down to my 3-year old brother). My dad vouched for this movie based on Raiders that only he and i had seen in the theater. As you might imagine, we weren't the only family in the theater and that made Temple of Doom even more memorable. The screams! The laughs! The ride! A true rollercoaster of a movie!

A year after this came out, there was an episode of NOVA on PBS about FX tech. For POV shots of the coal cars going through the tunnel they used a little car with a camera mounted on it. The camera was a common snapshot camera with the back door removed and replaced with a custom-built film magazine. So it looked like a regular little camera with a big drum on each side. They then took one frame at a time with the usual stop-motion method, but the camera could pivot on the little car, so they turned it to look around corners just before a bend on the train track. The FX man said he always felt disappointed by shots taken from a camera fixed on a moving car, because you didn't see what was ahead until after completing a turn.

Fun fact: Stephen Spielberg met Kate Capshaw in this film and later married her. They are still married to this day.

I'm 44 now and have loved this movie since I was a kid. I can't, for the life of me, understand people saying this movie is weak. All 3 are great in their own way. We don't talk about 4.

The child mimicking the adult was something Spielberg also did in Jaws, between father and son at the dinner table.

I’m way in the minority but I think this one is the second best Indy movie.

Here’s some little points of trivia for you. The name of the club in the opening was Club Obi Wan and when he turns and runs from the guards after escaping the mines are both homages to Star Wars. The guy that met them at the airport was Dan Aykroyd. Mythbusters proved that using an inflatable raft to jump from a plane and survive is possible and the big guard that was crushed is the same actor that was chopped by the propeller in Raiders.

As a kid watching these, i thought Short Round was just the coolest kid ever. I loved his connection with Indy, I still get a little teary how he says "Indy, I love you"

When I was younger, this was my favorite one. But as an adult the original and the third are probably my favorite

Sam's face when Indy added Chen to the flaming shish kebab was worth the admission alone lol. Agree on Wu Han, ever since I was a kid I felt gutted he died, might be one of most impactful bitpart character deaths ever, David Yip and Ford sold it like champs. This film is a movie OG for villainous laughs as well. Cannot wait for part 3's reaction. Once you are done with Indy, please get some Axel Foley in your life. 😄

God, I've been watching this original trilogy my whole life, and it's just so consistently awesome at every phase. All three, while admittedly not perfect, are still great in their own ways. Ark is just a damn fun, lighthearted, exuberant serial adventure, full of wonder and mysticism. Every charecter is incredibly memorable and likeable, the action scenes still knock your socks off...only complaint is a few really stupid scenes here and there, like when Indy and Marrion have sex on the boat. Temple is just a breathless, adrenaline jacked thrill ride, with an incredibly dark, horror movie like edge that truly makes it stand out in the series. As grating as Willie and her screaming can get, I actually don't dislike her nearly as much as everyone else, for one, because she's actually really funny a lot of the time, and to be fair, what normal person wouldn't be screaming non stop? Finally, Last crusade. Oddly enough, I find this one by far the weakest as an action spectacle. For some reason, most of the action sequences in it do next to nothing for me, and in a series so famous for it's action scenes, you'd think that would ruin it, but I still completely love it for one pivotal overarching element.....it has...so...much....❤ and feels. Everything with Indy and Henry Jones Sr is handled so beautifully you still totally go along with it. I swear to God, that scene where Connery tells him to forget the grail....😭😭😭😭 No human being who ever had a dad couldn't loose their shit during that moment. All in all, if adventure had a name, it would be Indiana Jones.

This is my favorite Indiana Jones movie -- just so you know: we do exist. And I thought Willie was hilarious. I think there are people (not sure if you're among them or not) who just get irritated with characters whose function is largely to irritate the other characters in the story, Jar Jar Binks (whom I also love) would be another instance. And it's not only comedy: in serious drama, Blanche Dubois in A Streetcar Named Desire is another case. The fact that these characters drive the other characters crazy is a central part of the point.

This is my favorite film in the Indiana Jones series. It’s mostly because of the rescue of the kids. In just about every Indy movie besides this, there’s a running thing that if our hero didn’t get involved, the villains would still lose due to whatever artifact they were chasing turning on them in some way. Here, he actually makes a major difference by saving all the children. That just makes this one my favorite. Plus, the action scenes are the best in this movie.

The Last Crusade is many fans’ favorite of the series, including mine. After the dark themes of Temple, Crusade is much more light, fun, and funny, with a cool story to boot. Hope you enjoy.

FUN, BUT CRAZY FACT: While shooting the bedroom fight scene, Harrison Ford ruptured a spinal disc from flipping the assassin over his back and somersaulting over him. He had to use a gurney to rest on while shooting takes, but his injury deteriorated and he had to be flown back to Hollywood for surgery and physical therapy. Luckily, he recovered and made it back to the set just before shooting schedule ended.

If it hasn't been mentioned before, the big guy Indy fights (who ends up in the rock crusher) is the same actor who got minced by the plane propeller in Raiders. He's an English ex-wrestler and star of a famous sit-com about Northern English builders working in Germany, called 'Auf Weidersehen, Pet'.

Chronologically, Temple of Doom takes place before Raiders of the Lost Ark.

This is my favorite one despite its obvious and glaring flaws (Willie being annoying and the falling from the plane sequence being utterly ridiculous). The dynamic of Indiana and Shortround is the most fun of all the Indiana Jones movies. And the really dark messed up visuals is the coolest aesthetic of all the Indiana Jones movies.

This Movie will always have a special place in My Heart, as it is one of the very first Movies that I'd ever seen as a kid...saw this before I'd even seen "Raiders." Found out years later that Harrison Ford severely injured himself filming that bedroom fight scene, and underwent emergency surgery to fix his back. While He was recovering, Harrison's Stunt Double stood-in for him as "Indy." Another Fun Fact: Kate Capshaw & Steven Spielberg starting dating in-between filming this Movie, and they're still Happily Married today!

Willie's a singer and showgirl caught fighting a death cult with a guy who she met when he took her hostage by knifepoint the day before. All things considered, I think she did fine.

I absolutely adore Temple of Doom and i think the main reason for that is because I watched it first out of the Indy films and when i was a kid, once Indy comes out of his blood of the kali coma the action just never lets up for one minute and just loved it as a kid and still do, still my favourite Indy adventure. I also loved that you notice that this is set earlier to Raiders so it actually makes it a prequel and the first in the Indy timeline, that is why there are no signs of any characters from Raiders in this one and yes MVP is definitely Short Round gutted he was never in anymore of the Indy films. These movies are always a thrill ride. This one was one of my faves since my grandmother found it entertaining so we enjoyed it together, the last film before she passed. Many Minecraft rides and adventures stemmed from this movie.

This is my favorite one but i think its because this is they only one ive ever seen 🤷🏾‍♀️. I just remember me and my dad watching this together and quoting the movie. "Drop them Dr. Jones! They will be found, you won't!"

Thanks for the reaction 👍 I can understand how you would rank the series 1, 4, 2 because I think a lot of a films impression has to do with the age and date you saw it. Even though #2 is generally looked down on over time, if you saw it (especially as a kid) in 1984, you were blown away because the genre was still so fresh and new. It’s really not the same as seeing it when it came out.

I know Willie is often a major point of contention with this installment, but over the years, I've grown to tolerate her. 😂 In actuality Kate Capshaw is a very underrated actress, and she did a great job for what her performance required. Personally I think this has some of the best Indiana Jones stuff. That mine cart chase is absolutely invigorating. The amount of filmmaking techniques used in it are amazing and varied. The Last Crusade is definitely a better movie, but this is the one that overtime has really grown on me.

I'm one of the few I guess, since this is probably my favorite of the three. The third one isn't bad at all, neither is the first one, this one just holds a special place in my heart. When I was young and watched this at our small theater, pay once get to watch it twice, I think the only movies I saw more than this one were The Dark Crystal and Gremlins. Good old days. Good memories. 🐾

My first Indy Jones film. The one I saw the most so I have an attachment to it. They fun and adventure in this was great, probably the funniest of them all.

Did u notice the English man at the beginning taking indy and Willie to the plane was dan Aykroyd? Also, the club at the beginning was club obi wan? Finally, the big Indian guy indy fights at the end is the same actor that he fought in the first film under the plane that got chopped up...

In case you didn't catch it, the guy talking to indy before he gets on the plane was Dan Aykroyd.

My favorite scene with Indy and Shorty is when they're camping for the night on the way to the palace and they're playing cards and they start to argue in English and Chinese accusing each other of cheating. That was such a great way to show how close they actually are, because Shorty obviously loves and admires Indy but he's also not afraid to talk back to him in some contexts.

Willie Scott’s character is a homage to similar characters in the old 1930s and 40s adventure movies, like Fay Wray in King Kong or a whole bunch of characters in vintage horror movies. I think everyone got this back in the cinemas in 1984 having grown up watching those old movies on TV, so we didn’t mind at all.

This is my favorite of the Indiana Jones movies. The opening scene with Harrison Ford wearing the James Bond tuxedo. The shootout, car chase and Dan Aykroyd escorting them to their plane. Also the dinner scene never gets old. The bugs, the snake surprise, the soup with eyeballs and of course the chilled money brains. So gross but so fun to watch. I love this movie completely and Harrison Ford is such a great iconic actor.

As a kid, "Raiders" was my favorite. As an adult, the third film is my favorite. Sean Connery and Harrison Ford are so damn funny and incredible together in that movie. I can't wait for you guys to see it. "Temple of Doom" is my least favorite of the original trilogy. I couldn't get past the 30 minute mark on the fourth film. It's so bad. But hopefully you guys watch that on the channel. It will force me to finish watching it. hahaha. Great reviews.

As a kid the gore was part of the excitement. kid me was like "and then and then his heart caught fire, and the bridge snapped and the rocks glowed and the crocodiles ate him"

This is my favorite Indy film, I think simply because it's the one I owned as a kid and watched over and over. I didn't see the original (at least regularly) until later.

This is my favourite of the Indiana Jones movies, and it is mostly due to Kate Capshaw's character and of course, Short Round but i also prefer the plot in this one over the other movies.

This was my favorite when I was a kid. The child loves Temple of Doom. When he realizes Raiders is the Lost Ark is better, he becomes a man. When he realizes Last Crusade is the best, he becomes wise.

Indy actually has an arc in this movie because his primary motivation for going to the palace and seeking the stone is the fortune and glory. But by the end he realizes how much it means to the tiny village and that’s more important. Also he had the chance to escape with the stone no problem but chose to stay and help the kiddos

This movie is my favorite prequel, it's dark and a great way to break from the typical format of sequel movies. they filmed in Sri Lanka, because India did not accept to host a film depicting their culture eating snakes, bugs and god knows what else. Also they actually dropped that massive bridge in Sri Lanka, and another smaller set in London. Filmography is kick ass.

My favourite in order is: 1. Raiders of the Lost Ark 2. Temple of Doom 3. The Last Crusade 4. The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

This is my favourite out of the three films. I liked the style and setting of this one.

This movie is hardcore. Like others have said it contributed to the pg-13 rating. Lucas and Spielberg were both going through divorces so they have said they were in dark places. Also the big dude Indy fights is the same big dude from raiders, just in different makeup. Can’t wait for you guys to watch last crusade. One of my favorite movies of all time.

While Raiders is probably my favorite Indy movie, Temple of Doom has always been a guilty pleasure. Leaning into classic tropes is a big part of these movies so it can be enjoyed by watching out for the different tropes. An interesting thing with this being set before 'Raiders' is that you can see an Indy that is more like Belloq from that movie; you can see Indy develop into a more caring character.

A small thing that I really love about this one is when Indiana Jones legitimately, tries to save the big henchman before being pulled into the crusher. Send a lot about his character in that moment.
