Thank you for sharing!!! I really enjoy hearing stories about the Indy Hat!!!! The Pennman Indy Raiders (Beaver) Hat survived a bucket of water!!!! Very nice!!!!
The Stetson temple hat is also pretty good, they have a wool and rabbit version and I think it was worn in one scene in the movie and in the advertisement.
Hi, if you got the Dr Jones Senior hat from Cherry Pat Hats on Etsy, I'm AFAIK the first one who contacted her about making a Senior hat. She was terrific to work with, I sent her many photos of auction hats, and screen shots, and she was able to develop a screen-accurate pattern. About getting the correct fabric, it's very difficult. What I did was buy a vintage Harris Tweed jacket (in a tiny size, but there's plenty of fabric for a couple hats) in the very dark tweed that's correct for the Hero hat. The tweed is dark brown and black houndstooth, not common. So for a screen-accurate hat you have to find that unusually dark tweed and send the fabric to Cherry Pat.
Good video... can't believe the Stetson Temple didn't even earn an honorable mention. I love my Stetson. Best hats in the world. Classic lines, great look...screen accurate...maybe close, but no where near perfect.
As far as "middle-of-the-road" hats go for Indiana Jones fedoras, perhaps David Garrison at Garrison Hatters can be added to one's list. If you check out my 'Raiders' fedora review, you'll see what I mean. David learned how to craft fur felt hats from Steve Delk, so (to me) they are close to accurate in regards to block usage and aesthetic. I really enjoy your hats, though. That 'Raiders' in beaver is just perfection.
@ Captain Westicle: Great job Wes!! I'm loving my Harrison Last Crusade Fedora from AdVintage!!! It could honestly pass for a Herbert Johnson with how it looks. Extremely comfortable and lightweight!! It looks like it does when Indy and Marcus are on the Venice Pier when they meet up with Elsa. I bought a hat brush with it, use it every time I'm wearing it. And I bought a hat cover for the rain. My everyday hat and my Fedora for when I go back to work.
Reaaaally nice collection, congrats,i have the chance to order few years ago when Mr Steve Delk was producing Indy's fedora ;the Raiders, the Crusade and the Crystal skull hats ,all 100%beaver fur felt ,all masterpieces !
The snowy river, to me has way too much taper in the crown. I ended up putting mine on my scarecrow. Lol. I have an akubra Boss of the plains which they no longer make. Comes open crown to shape yourself. 3 1/2" brim. My akubra silver spur, also no longer made, is very close to the same thing. Very nice thin felt, lightweight and fairly flexible. I wore my silverspur for about 5 years daily. It still looks cool, faded, sweat stains, dirt and grime. No cracks or holes yet. Been rain soaked countless times with very minimal taper to the crown or brim. I'm still keeping my boss of the plains for later in life. My avitar is an old 60's stetson which I shaped the same as my others. It's held up really well too. Even better than my akubras. I spend a lot of time outdoors in the deep woods and I don't baby my hats. Akubra makes some damn good hats. Older stetsons and resistols are great too. My "pure beaver" custom hats are junk. They shrink and taper like crazy. Modern felt, even pure beaver, is not that great. With the exception of Akubra, which holds up well considering it is rabbit fur.
As far as an Indy hat, I'd say the fed 4, or get an old stetson or resistol with a high crown. Reshape it and work some of the stiffener out of it, sand it a bit to soften it up and make it a little bit thinner, cut the brim down and add the ribbon.
love the video! I always wanted a legit, Indy hat. I went to your home page...full highlander episodes!...I just go my Marto Duncan and Connor swords! Long story long, subscribed!
Sweet! I just went to a convention in March, with Peter Wingfield, David Abromowitz, and Jim Byrnes. Got some interview panels with them on this channel as well. Hoping to add more Highlander content to this page in the future, including some sword reviews. Also have an Indiana Jones fan film coming down the pipe, so lots of cool stuff going on. Thanks for subscribing! :)
Advintage is the way to go IMO; Thomas has the basic Harrison for 220 dollars and the beaver ones for the double amount. Thing is, they’re sold out quite fast. Great video btw
I have no experience with Advintage, but have been hearing some very good things about those hats over the last 8 months or so. I'd love to get my hands on one to do a review. :)
I think the confusion about the Akubra Adventurer comes from the strange fact that there are two different hats of the same name... The Adventurer sold within Australia is the pre-pinched one with a lower crown, and the one sold in the States via David Morgan is open-crowned and quite similar to the Federation IV. Almost made a big mistake and ordered the Australian one while expecting the open crown!
The only problem with the Fed is the brown color is just a bit too dark and grey, but otherwise it really is the best under $250, especially considering durability. Christy's is in the same-ish price range, but I'd avoid it as the felt is delicate and the ribbon isn't right. But there are several in that $250-300 range that are great. Northwest makes a great custom hat, and that Hufvud shop on Etsy I've heard nothing but great things about. The *only* problem with Penman's Everyman hat is that it's really only accurate for a Raiders hat; the brim is too big for TOD or LC but it's still a great hat. There is, of course, always a real Herbert Johnson but I just don't think they're as durable as an Akubra and if you're spending that kind of money might as well go with a Penman custom.
Great review Wes. But, I have two friendly words for you............. Herbert Johnson!!!!! Great job though Wes. I currently have the Akubra Adventurer, wear it everyday, it's held up well for what it is (given it hasn't maintained it's color.) Keep it up bro!!! Your doing great!!!!
I can't in good conscience recommend a Herbert Johnson, and this is why. I have seen a Herbert Johnson hat in person. Both the felt quality and the stitching are by far inferior to a Penman. At the time of this video, the Penman and the Herbert Johnson cost about the same. So why buy a Herbert Johnson when you can get a Penman for the same price? Since I filmed this, the cost of a Penman has gone up by quite a bit. Not sure about the Herbert Johnson. But if you're going to spend that kind of money, a Penman Everyman or a hat from ScreenCapped are still better choices than a Herbert Johnson. I know it's kind of a horrible thing to say, since Herbert Johnson was the one who made the hats for the original films, but the bottom line is that you're just not getting enough quality for what you are spending. There are better options out there, and that's why Herbert Johnson is not mentioned in this video.
As a side note, I have been wanting to do a review of the Akubra Adventurer. I know Indy fans who are on a budget generally go with the Akubra Fed IV. How does the Adventurer compare? Does it have a decent crown, brim, and shape?
@@captainwesticle1654 Yeah it does. Granted when I ordered it I got it Open Crown, not realizing at the time that I could have had them bash and shape it.
@@captainwesticle1654 You mentioned the quality of the HJ is inferior as far as the stitching and felt, but what about the shape and overall accuracy to the Raiders hat used in the film? Is the Penman more accurate or about the same as the HJ? Thanks. I'd like to buy an Indy hat from Raiders and can't decide on which to buy. HJ now has a new 40th aniversary edition.
"you've got to go with a Penman," if he ever communicates with his customers (which he does not). He's been on the longest hiatus in hat making history.
Yup. It wasn't always like that. Back when I was buying Penmans, his communication with customers was excellent. Now he has vanished off the face of the earth.
Hey Man Cave at this point if you’re wanting a Penman quality Indy hat go with Herbert Johnson they have improved in quality 10 fold since the reboot in 2016. They have excellent customer service and have answered all my emails. It will run you about $600 after the shipping cost is added in. You can’t go wrong with the original maker of the Indy hat. If it was 10 years ago I would say Penman but Herbert Johnson has finally gotten back on their feet and now make very high quality hats and if you can get one then you need to go get one you will not be disappointed.
@TheAngryNerd64 I have heard that as well. In the past, I haven't promoted Herbert Johnson because the hats that I have seen have been very average, and cost a pretty penny. But I hear their new ones are of excellent quality. I have wanted to get my hands on one to do a review for this channel, but funds are an issue right now.
You're paying for the name. I also heard that, even when they did offer their hats in Beaver, it was a thin dress weight and not a western weight. @@captainwesticle1654
I did not put that in this review because it is an inferior product compared to the other makers mentioned, especially when the price is factored in. I know they made the hats for the original films, but if you're looking for good quality at a good price, you need to look elsewhere. I was very disappointed in the quality of their hat at the asking price point. Get a Steele and Jones or a Screencapped. Better hat at a comparable price.
@@captainwesticle1654 It depends on when you saw that hat, a few years ago Herbert Johnsson started selling Screen accurate hats in beaver and rabbit felt. I can't say if it is better than the Penmens, but I myself have a Herrbert Johnsson and it is very good quality.
@@jamesgrand2901 the HJ I saw was in 2013, so I would assume that their quality has improved since then. I have seen pictures of people wearing them since then, and they do look nice, but that was the first and only time I have ever seen one in person.
Yes. The reason I did not list Herbert Johnson here is because I have seen one in person. With a high price tag, you are better off buying a Penman. The Hebert Johnson is inferior to the Penman in every way, from the stitching, to the quality of the felt, and everything in between. For that reason, I can't in good conscience suggest to anyone to buy a Herbert Johnson when they could have a Penman instead.
Honestly, I think that's an error by the hat maker. The hat is a little too big for ShanChan's head, and her head keeps hitting the tear drop in the middle of the crown, putting pressure on the pinch. We fixed that by adding some newspaper to the inside of the hat band, but I still need to tighten up that pinch a bit.
Are you sure that Penman owns Adventurebuilt Hats??? I understand there were two people involved in Adventurebuilt, Steve Delkin in the USA and Marc Kitter in Germany. I understand Steve Delkin is no longer involved however I believe Marc Kitter still owns Adventurebuilt Deluxe in Germany.
I heard this directly from John Penman himself. It is also posted on his website. John's Adventurebuilt hats also have the official Adventurebuilt logo on them. All signs point to this being correct information, but I have not heard anything about the German side of things, as far as the company is concerned.
Only slightly. You can get the hat from Mr. Penman with or without the turn. The current pinch and turn on that hat I did myself, but he can make it any way that you would like. :)
It's %100 Beaver, but it's a different felt from the regular Penman line. It's much more soft and flexible. You can contact John at Penmanhats.com for more information.
Sadly, you'll probably still need to get a hat off this list, as the cheaper ones don't have the right look, and look awful on camera. Trust me, I know. Wasted a lot of hard earned money on those hats. :p For a good budget Indy hat, go with the Akubra Fed IV. It's about $150, and it'll look great and last forever.
@@ConnerTheEsquire you can try, but it's generally not the shape of the crown or the brim that's the problem. The general problem is that the crown isn't high enough, and the brim is either too wide or too short. No amount of shaping will fix those issues.
It would need to be reblocked. And wool felt doesn't take well to reblocking at all. You might find a good fur felt hat on ebay for a good price that could be reblocked, many people have done it. And you could block it yourself -- there are plenty of mostly correct blocks (made from plastic) that can be ordered online and some people have even used glass jars in the correct circumference, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're experienced. You could also send it to Penman or another hatter to reblock it, and that will cost >$100. Add in the new ribbon and possibly liner and sweatband and you're still looking at a good $150, which ain't worth it unless it's an heirloom or a super nice beaver felt. You might be able to find a used Fed IV on ebay for under $100 occasionally, but like Wes said, if you really want the right look you'll be spending $150 and up for either a new hat or a used one that you refurbish.
Bro penmans hats are way too expensive, as of 3 years ago all of his hats are 450, beaver felt was $700-$900 and the original maker of the hat sells it for $350 ahhh
If you have the opportunity to compare a Penman to a Herbert Johnson, you will see that the Penman is far superior in just about every way. Is it worth the price difference? Well, that's for you to decide. When I was buying Penmans, the top of the line hat was about $450. Now they have gotten to a price point that I can no longer afford. But they are still the best hats on the market, although there are some other fine makers out there. I usually get my hats from Screencapped now.
