These are probably the best Raiders style/fedoras out there. I like the Akubra too, but the custom builds are simply and understandably the very tip top of any fedoras, clothing, or boots/shoes.
You would be right. Mikael at Hufvud makes top-of-the-line hats. Even for an Indy style, mine still blows me away. Other than being a bit tall in the crown, they are great!
Definitely looks like one of the best Raiders styled hats just from looking at photos of them (and videos like this) - wonder how it compares to the reboot Herbert Johnson hats.
This is the next hat I want to get. Since my head is massive, my Screencapped 40th anniversary with the correct brim width and crown height looks a bit short because of how wide/long it needed to be to fit my massive head. I love the way it looks and feels, but I think the taller crown of this Hufvud would help give it the correct proportional look to my head
Looks great on you Thanks for the thorough review I’ve had a few generic jones hats, but as you know they’re all crap. So now I’m looking at this company and Advintage They will be hard to find with 5 coming out so wish me luck! Thanks again.
@@COsplayRaider Well, that gets complicated. I ordered rabbit, but there have been issues. Long story short, he upgraded me to 100% beaver at no charge. I should have had this hat months ago. Hopefully it'll arrive soon. I'm sure I'll make a YT vid when it gets here. The customer service and communication with Hufvud have been really great!
@@JDJohnston9906753 Interesting. Mikael, owner, is normally right on time with his orders. He is very informative and kind, hands down. Some of the best milliner service(s) to date. I was curious because the 30X beaver mixed with hare is a perfect mix. It's perfectly malleable but dense. At times I feel as if there is no hare felt whatsoever. Hope you like his 100X beaver!
@@COsplayRaider I think this is an unusual situation. Some kind of issue with the felt supplier. Not sure. Whatever the case, he's been great with communication. He gave me the option of either a full refund or upgrading my hat to beaver. I opted to upgrade. He's been apologetic and gone out of his way to make it right. I'm not complaining, but I am hoping to get the hat soon, as I've been waiting patiently for a very long time.
Yeah, I requested a 5" open crown with a 2" brim, thats more of my personal style. If you're gonna spend $300+ getting a custom hat made, why not get every detail to your specifications. The quality of the fur on Mikaels was much nicer than the steel and jones imo. Not knocking it, The S & J is a very nice hat. I'm extremely satisfied with my custom Leifer from Hufvud.. When I wear it for a formal occasion, I'm the center of everyones attention. Cheers!
Thanks for the comparison. The color looks just about right; I think the European makers like Advintage as well source felt that might be a bit closer to the screen accurate color for some reason. How is the deerskin sweatband? My experiences with various deer leather has been that it's sort of spongy, so I worry that it could get hot, but the silk liner I imagine is better for both hot and cold than the rayon satin that most hats use.
My pleasure. The color is spot on in person; I've never seen an internationally commissioned fedora with an off-tone felt. A lot of the makers here in the U.S. create great hats but their suppliers offer every color but THE sable. Regarding the deerskin sweatband, it is just a bit spongy. Nothing drastic as it is certainly comfortable. The satin/silk liner is a bit thicker for potentially good reason. Overall, it is one SOLID fedora...
Yeah, I like the sort of exaggerated character of Mikael's hats. I'm curious to see how it holds up over time. My Steele and Jones has held up well, as has my Advintage. My Screencapped is too new to judge, but appears to be as quality as a Penman -- and my Penman custom and my Akubra (the most expensive and the cheapest, ironically) have held up the best over time. But that's what I tell people: if they want a true beater with no regrets, get an Akubra Fed. The color is the least accurate, but it will take a beating and you won't cry about any damage it takes. I'll probably be ordering from Mikael soon.
@@gf4670 Good to hear, and what a great collection of hats you have! Mikael's hats are a must-have. Nicely dressed and sturdier than most hats I've come across. You also get the luxury of giving him every single spec you desire (i.e. dimensions, liner colors, etc.) which is great.
I like his hat (Hufvud), because there is more material to work than the others, it bellows better and you can really dent the crown. Easy to play with a new style in the same vane and bash it for your head and face when you have more material to work with. So the Hufvud is a beaver and rabbit mix?
@@crownandbrim9261 Mikael's hats are definitely for larger noggins! I wish I had told him to make the crown almost an inch shorter to look more proportionate, but it still fits well and makes for a refined "dressier" fedora.
I'm really late to the party here lol. I just wanted to ask though how has this hat held up over the years? I just ordered one myself and was curious of how much mileage I can expect to get.
Would have preferred to see more of a tear drop dent and does it really have a snappable crown, if it doesn't have both it isn't a fedora, it is a 'Town and Country' which is what was worn by Indiana Jones.
Looks fantastic!! You should really check out adVintage hats. Thomas is an amazing hat maker and has amazing customer service. He makes the best Streets of Cairo hat, bar none. Have a Raiders in beaver from him that’s a replica of the idol grab scene. Same thing as it sounds like the Hufvud is; incredibly soft and smooth felt, yet incredibly durable and sturdy. He’s making me a Last Crusade hat very soon, so I can’t wait to get that. Looks like another excellent hat maker is in the game with Hufvud! His other style hats look amazing. Congrats!!
Thanks, Kevin! AdVintage fedoras are great. My Hufvud is how I imagine an Advintage would be, especially regarding the color. Something about the makers outside of the States makes them really good.
Mr. Ryan! Could you share what the exact measurement of your head is? I'm measuring my own head at about 56.9cm, and I'm curious to see how a 57cm or 57.5cm might fit on someone with a similar circumference.
You should be just fine at a 57 sized hat. My head ranges from 57 to 57.5 (keep in mind hair has a part in head size). While this hat felt a bit larger initially, conforming over time got it right where it should be...
That is indeed a fine looking hat. I just ordered a Lucky Leifur yesterday in emerald grey, and am so excited I can barely stand it. Would you say yours took about 6 weeks to get, or there about?
I have held a Penman fedora that was pure beaver before and it was DENSE. Very stiff and very heavy in my personal opinion yet good if you are looking for that sturdy of a hat (I like a bit of movement in my felts). The 30X beaver/hare felt gives you the look and feel of beaver but you can actually move the felt. I think it is perfect... Regardless, Mikael at Hufvud is an outstanding craftsman to commission from. You would not be disappointed!
It also depends on the thickness and how much hat stiffener is thrown onto the hat too..I've got four from Penman hats, and they all vary in feel, not so much in thickness..John, I think, uses a thinner beaver felt for his Raiders style, since that's closer to the movie hat, and uses less stiffener too, so it'll depend on the hat and style, as well as the maker you choose to go with...I'd always choose beaver over rabbit, simply because it rains so hard here in Japan that hats can get soaked to the core in a flash, and it's just better to have a hat that won't leave me worrying about it afterwards...They're smoother, tougher, and a touch heavier than the rabbit variety, but all of that is variable to a large degree..
@@ralfybaby It is the opposite. Beaver felt, in comparison to rabbit, is very dense. On average, a rabbit will have 30 hair pores per square inch; a beaver has more than 300 per square inch. As you can imagine too, their hair is adapted to allow them to stay as waterproof as possible. When you turn their hair into felt, the characteristics are not too different...
If this has impressed you you should try one handmade by Thomas at Advintage - I've bought a few custom handmade hats nothing comes close to what Thomas does, especially his 100% pure Portuguese Beaver felt............great prices too. www.advintage.de/?lang=en
You had me in the first half. Not gonna lie! I do appreciate the kind words, but I feel like the proportions do not match my head too well. I am heavily debating on whether or not I should sell it; my girlfriend commissioned it for me as a gift, so that is the main conflict...
@@YakubibnEsau I am wearing it today to see how I feel about the bash. A rebash might happen later this afternoon with special techniques that I do with my hats sometimes...
this is one ugly hat with a disproportionate crown size and poor tear-dropped. shipment packaging is wrong, Never put a fedora down on a flat surface like that !!
There's nothing wrong with this hat, infact it's pretty accurate to the film, indy sports a 5" crown with a center dent crease and side pinches, and a brim width of 2 3/4" on the side and 3" front and back, and don't worry about how you store it, a good hat will take a shit ton of beating and will still March on handsomely but if you don't want to ruin the brim shape Yee don't lay it flat. But nothing a little steam can't fix, ah and lastly Indy's hat comes from 100% Brazilian hare fur
