The sad look of the knight when he waved goodbye is heartbreaking once you think about it. He saw father and son saving each other and deciding to take care by renouncing entirely to the Grail, the ultimate treasure. For the first time in eight centuries he saw an act of love, which ironically resulted much more precious than the cup he bowed to protect all that time.
The look in the eyes of Henry Jones Sr. when he saw the knight… he dedicated all of his life to the search of the Holy Grail. He didn‘t make it to the holy chamber but when he saw the Knight there is something in his eyes like „I always knew it“. It’s wonderful
during the Third time I watched this masterpiece of a movie, I noticed a slight expression of relief as he is allowed to step down from his duties with honours as it has come to an end. Not by choice of higher powers who govern the fates but by the deeds of someone foolish who pays no heed to warning of infortune. As shown when Elsa Schneider picked up the grail and walked backwards only seeing the grail and thus crossing the sealed boundary that binds the Guardian in a place likened to the "Torment of Tantalos" of Greek mythology
I mean to be fair that’s in line with the entire christian thing surrounding the grail even in the arthur stories. It’s symbol of regeneration through love
he also saw the reason why it was locked away in the first place, pure greed that made man kill another he did die on a good note though, seeing fatherand son unite again
One little detail that gets me every time is right after Henry's injury is healed by the Grail. For a moment he holds the cup itself. The thing he spent 30 plus years looking for. His obsession. But after just a moment, he puts it aside to embrace his son. Illumination indeed.
The "Holy Grail" theme, aside from the main theme of Indiana Jones of course, is the most memorable theme from the Trilogy for me so its pretty cool to see it getting attention
@@henreebee6561 feel like that one’s more memorable for most people, so I understand the appeal, but the 3rd movie has always just been my favorite for many reasons, including music, plot, and characters
@@objectjon9015 Last Crusade is actually my least favorite of the trilogy, mostly bc Henry Sr. is such a jerk. However I still enjoy it a lot. Raiders is still the best imo, but all 3 are fantastic.
This shows how Williams could conjure up moods and emotional qualities so brilliantly. The person below mentions the Ark theme which is also great. That music is properly ominous and "accursed" in nature. The Grail theme, on the other hand, is beautiful and sweet with a blessed, *beatific" quality.
Each artifact of the original trilogy has a very distinct theme and tone matching to the religous background and story of the artifact. The Ark's theme surrounds it in mystery and almost dread. Very telling considering the dangers of the Ark and its place in Jewish lore as it destroyed Jericho and decimated Philistines in its wake. The Ark avenging itself against the Nazis as the Hebrew God struck down the Egyptians in Exodus. The Sankara Stones has a very triumphant theme. As Shiva acting through the protagonists taking down the Thugee cult and the emancipation of the slaves. The triumph over evil. While not specific to Hindu culture specifically, a triumph over evil is something held high in all religions. The Grail? The Grail is reverent, low calming horns to portray humility- but power. Christians preach of Christ's forgiveness and kindness- so to have a theme that feels kind and comforting is fitting. The cup itself being a gift of healing - not holy fire such as the Ark of the Old Testament.
That’s one of my favorite things about the first three movies. They all had religious subject matter and I find the lore of each to be very fascinating.
I’m pretty sure the theme for Temple of Doom is actually for the enslaved children which I find interesting. Like John Williams was like, “The stones don’t matter, the children do.”
The motiff at 3:42 always gets me. It makes me feel like somehow everything is going to be okay. After the hauntingly beautiful, chromatic earlier part of the theme.
I just re watched all the 3 original Indiana Jones episodes recently. It's crazy to think that John Williams is already 91 years old. Steven Spielberg is 76, George Lucas is 79. The film industry will probably never produce such iconic and enjoyable movies anymore like Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Jurassic Park. This was my childhood and it will remain that forever, and I'm grateful for that experience.
I agree! They don't make them these days like the good old classics. Those were the days of the golden era of movie making. I remember going with my dad to see movies such as Jaws, Star Wars, Close Encounters and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
This film has the best take on Christian mythology in my opinion, which this theme reflects well: ancient, grand but not to the point of being in your face about it, and most importantly, humble. You see this throughout the movie: the true grail being a simple wooden cup, the Knight being an old man in unremarkable chainmail rather than some radiant demigod, each step of the journey taking place in dusty tombs and caves rather than elaborate dungeons, and so on. While the louder and flashier aspects of the mythology have their place (such as Raiders) this feels exactly like how a mythos centred around a kind carpenter's son should feel. I may have some bad blood with Christianity as a religion, but works like this really help me appreciate its finer points.
I agree. Humility as a core tenant is lost upon many (including the poor disillusioned victims in the film). Humility neither requests nor demands funds.
I wish John Williams would write something about what his influences were in creating this theme. It works so well evoking Christian ritual and sense of the medieval.
If you listen to "Sketches on a Tudor Psalm" (1971) by Fisher Tull, which is based on a Renaissance version of the second psalm, you will hear this exact theme. John Williams just takes existing material and develops it further.
Williams composed so many legendary themes it's almost unbelievable. Of course the most mainstream ones like Star Wars theme and Raiders' March steal the spotlight but even both Star Wars and Indy franchises have numerous just as good if not better musical themes like Grail or Yoda's themes. And these are just two selected movies Williams has composed for.
This theme gives me goosebumps and makes me feel rather sad but in a good way. My grandfather looked like Sean Connery and he meant a lot to me. Hearing his stories of when he was in the RAF. This song, the film reminds me of him
7:36-8:00 when Indy pours the water from the cup over his dads wounds and heals him...gets the look of a complete miracle on his face. Gets me all emotional every time
The special effect used to wash away Henry's gunshot wound is clever. It's powder made to look like a wound and steam is added to enhance the effect. Plus John Williams score for the grail music is brilliant. I'm fascinated by grail lore and was really pleased that it was going to part of an Indiana Jones movie.
That part at 7:42 always gives me chills. As Indy tilts the cup and the first few drops land on Henry‘s wound making it heal instantly. Henry winces at the pain And the music goes quiet for one more second. Then suddenly at 7:49 the theme swells one more time in triumph as it shows Henry’s wound just being washed away with no trace left. Signaling that Henry’s life is officially saved. God the chills.
I was about to comment this. All of the Indiana Jones soundtrack is engraved in my brain, not because of the movies, but because I had countless hours in the lego game 😂 I can tell what part of the movie is just by a tiny part of the song. The movies are great too ofc
This one is my personal favorite in the trilogy.. We don’t talk about the other two lol. I used to love Temple of Doom the most but over the years I began to see the true brilliance of this film in particular.
Indiana Jones III is a film like none other. It is one scale beyond The Raiders of the Lost Ark, not to mention of the other two films. The holy grail theme is by far the most memorable of all 4 indiana jones films.
I wish that all of the Indiana Jones films were about the search for a religious object such as the Grail and Ark. This is what made the Raiders and Last Crusade interesting to me. Of course the adventure and daring heroics of Indiana Jones are always fun to watch. But the search for a holy relic mystifies the story which arouses interest in the plot. A good one could had been the quest for the rod of Moses.
All three of the original films had religious objects as the main point of the plot, including Temple of Doom with the Sankara Stones (not real, but based on the Sivalinga Lingam, so the portrayal of Hinduism is not inaccurate -- the Thuggees were real too, you know). Meanwhile, 4 and 5 are about science-fiction.
The grail theme, like the ark theme, match the tones of the old and new testament perfectly. The ark was ominous yet awesome, promising that justice was going to be dolled out for evil doers. The grail, still powerful and ethereal, is more uplifting, reflecting healing, forgiveness, and illumination.
What makes the movie memorable for me is seeing the young Indiana Jones tv series before the last crusade came out it fits like a glove it's perfect tv series and movies GREAT JOB to all involved.
This movie was Speilburgs Magnum Opus. The true quest of the movie was the rekindling of their relationship, not finding a cup. The real treasure is the relationship. Genius
thank you for this! i've always wanted to see this as one long track. it's so emotional, and lots of parts always put shivers down my spine for some reason.
I've seen this movie so many times with my dad, Henry Jones always reminds me to him, they're so alike. This song brings back many beautiful memories. Rest in peace sir Sean Connery.
I like how the original movies were not just about artifacts, but also tie these imaginary artifacts to the historical religious themes, and stories that give it a real historical basis. I feel like losing the religious ties is kind of where the crystal skull lost its way from the original 3 movies, and why its so bad among other reasons. Like the holy grail is kind of an ancient artifact, but its like a miracle in many of the bible's stories.
I always felt like a scene with christ and his desiples at the last supper belonged In this movie. Showing christ drinking from it then indy drinking From it. Then the knight saying you have chosen wisely.
There will likely never ever be adventure movies again like the first and third Indiana Jones. Temple of Doom was good enough. This is the perfect score to a perfect conclusion of a TRILOGY!! I want to have high hopes for the 5th one.
This is and always will be my favourite film of all time, then The Raiders of The Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, Crystal skull and then if this new movie comes out maybe it'll outperform the fourth instalment
@@timesquare2723 I hear you, the soundtrack is a right masterpeice too, personally not as much as Last Crusade and Raiders, however regardless all of the Indiana tracks are godly. Anyways the Slave childrens crusade track I think is probably one of the most indiana jones tracks it's perfect!
I still havent watched the movie since Sean Connerys passing. And i still cant believe that it has been already half a year since he died....may he rest in peace
Sir Laurence Olivier was the first choice to play The Grail Knight, but he was in failing health, and flights of angels would sing him to his rest the year this motion picture was unleashed like the wrath of God.
I saw this in a movie therter when they launched the 4k editions. This theme in movie theater came on it was epic to hear in a thearter. This and ark theme are my favs of all Indy films.
