Here in INDIANA we love our HISTORY. FYI the youngest to serve in the Civil War a Boy from Indianapolis last name Black (a drummer) I believe his age was 7/8 his Drum is at the Indianapolis Children's museum he was injured in the war he later died several years later they believed from traumas from the war (now some of my facts are possibly off because I have had a stroke). The museum does have the drum & it is in storage right now but they take it out from time to time. IT is so important that we remember these wars/conflicts the things & of course these people so we don't repeat history. GOD BLESS YOU ✝️🇺🇸💖🚜

He said that Churchill once famously said it. Churchill is much better known than Santayana and it was relevant to war when Churchill said it. Don't try to outsmart yourself, internet scholar.

There's a set of stairs (at least the last time I went) that has framed lists of Hoosiers who fought in WWI. One of them was my grandfather. It was great to see the museum again!

If you have never been to fort ouiatenon in West Lafayette Indiana you should really check it out. It was used during the French and Indian war here in Indiana. It's a really fascinating place.

As stated from some of the other viewers, this was an excellent tour of a museum I had never even heard of. There is also a noteworthy military/history museum a couple of hours away in Vincennes, Indiana. Great work J. D.! Keep up the great work!

My mom loved Ernie Pyle. When she came to visit us in Hawaii in 1989, she took flowers to his headstone at the Punchbowl cemetery. One of the great journalists of the war.

You will not be disappointed! It's beautiful and will leave you with more Hoosier pride! I also leave in north part of the state. Well well worth the trip. Go visit the Scottiah Rite Building close to this War Memorial the tour is fascinating. The Indiana State Muesum and the museum on American Indians is awesome its down on south side of the circle downtown by the NCAA college muesum..seriously take a long weekend two trips each and enjoy all that Indy has to show.

There were two survivors of the Indianapolis at the American Legion I go to , past away now. One of them I got to know pretty well and he told me not in detail but what it was like after the ship sank.As a vet myself I thought I'd seen some things but I was wrong

I visited recently, and I heard that the families of the survivors have a yearly gathering, and this year, they've moved the location of that gathering so the last surviving vet of the Indianapolis doesn't have to travel.

It’s a shame..Korean war deserves to be remembered, the fighting was nasty, our troops fought very hard & deserve our total respect same as WW1 & WW2 vets received. I remember years ago reading a book written by a Korean War vet & he served his tour & came home & some guy from his small hometown asked where he’d been & he said “fighting a war”. Crazy. Grateful for your Fathers service.

I’ve been to Indianapolis many times to visit friends but never made it to this war Memorial, so it was good to get a glimpse of what was inside. You always do a great job of letting us feel like we are taking a tour. You give us enough background to know what we’re looking at, but you also do a good job at not over explaining the items.

Another MOH recipient from Indiana as Frank H. Ono. Frank was a second generation Japanese American who served in the US Army in WW II. He received the DSC for actions in Italy, and was later awarded the MOH after a review of records was made. More details can be found on his wikipedia page.

There's a really cool park in Battleground, IN where the Battle of Tippecanoe happened. It has its own museum. Each year, Lafayette hosts Feast of the Hunter's Moon, focusing on the French traders and trappers that came up the river. Really cool festival!

The feast of the Hunter's Moon is awesome. That is every October if you're interested. Other than last year it's been going on for about 30 years. The Battle of Tippecanoe happened in what is now Battle ground Indiana. There are many trails that you can walk as well as the museum, the large monument and you can see where certain people fell during the battle. I've been there many times.

My Grandfather was Benjamin Harrison, born in TX, died in Oklahoma., brothers, twins Charlie, and Noah, and several more kids. I think Tabitha was there mother. I have all the info. on them, but would have to look it up. Good to meet more relatives.

I was born in Vincennes, Indiana. That is where Fort Sackville was located. There are many historical things to see there, including the George Rogers Clark memorial and the William Henry Harrison mansion.

I lived in Indianapolis twice. Great museums there including the Newfields art museum, State of Indiana Museum, Indianapolis Historical Society, Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis Children’s Museum, Conner Prairie Village in Noblesville. Outstanding. All of them. I drive from Florida every other year to see all of these over a few days. I will go anywhere for a great museum.

Several years ago I had friends that worked at the memorial. All those that work there, do an awesome job. I was lucky enough to see behind the scenes. It’s just as impressive, maybe even more. Medal of Honor/Sammy Davis is one of the nicest and humble people you’ll ever meet. It’s great you can give acknowledgement to the memorial when so many young people are trying to destroy our history.

I am also one of the lucky few that have been able to visit Iwo Jima. My group walked into a cave and there was nothing but stacked up empty bottles from flame throwers just sitting there corroding away. There was another cave that had nothing but smashed and broken radios, both Japanese and American. Walking along the black volcanic sand beach were the invasion happened, with every footstep you are dislodging bullets tips, empty cartridges, shrapnel fragments. While going into the caves and dugouts, you can run your fingers in the tool marks left in the rock from the Japanese soldiers and Korean laborers. Awe-inspiring and bone-chilling at the same time.

Oh my gosh. I'm wanting to visit Iwo Jima so bad I can hardly stand it. I understand that there's really only one day a year that you can go. Is that right?

Once a year fro February 19 to March 26 when the battle was fought Americans are allowed to travel to Iwo Jima. However, the island does have 3 things going against it. 1. It is a Japanese possession, Iwo Jima and Okinawa were turned back over to Japan in the mid-1970s. 2. It is an active Japanese Coast Guard-Self Defense Force station. 3. I believe Iwo Jima is declared a war grave due to the 19,000 Japanese and 7000 Americans still buried and missing there. It’s a somber reminder of what the Americans went through to take the island, and what the Japanese went through trying to defend it. Crawling through all the underground tunnels it was a constant 90+degrees F due to the volcanic activity of the island. No fresh water to be found anywhere on the island. All the memorials to the Japanese soldiers still there are all littered with Saki bottles and cups of water. The top of Mt Surabachi isn’t that big. Maybe 12 to 15 feet wide at the most and maybe 75 feet long before you drop off the edges or fall in the crater. The whole islands smells like rotten eggs too.

My grandfather had a patch collection. It was 8 ft tall by 12 ft wide by the time he passed away. His friends called it the million dollar wall. Sold at auction to a private collector when he passed

The 19th Indiana, the first of the regimental flags shown, was part of the famed Iron Brigade. That flag saw Antietam, Gettysburg, all sorts of smaller engagements and other battles im forgetting, along with many GAR meetings after the war. Real grateful that that flag still survives!

My 3rd great grandfather was in the 7th Indiana Volunteers and was wounded at the battle of West Point, Virginia in 1862. Though I live down south now, I'll always consider Indiana as my family's home.

Honestly this place looks amazing. So many cool relics and documentations on things going all the way back to the revolutionary war, crazy to think they had those. Definitely will have to visit this place one day.

As a kid and as an adult I visited this place scores of times. I also brought both my sons here. I loved the aircraft engines they had on the lowrr level.

Just binging your "older content" today. I had my Eagle Scout Court of Honor at the Indiana War Memorial, that place is amazing. I live in Louisville now but Indianapolis will always be a special place to me

Monument circle next? I LOVE the amount of museums in that area. We could spend an entire weekend just visiting museums in Indy and still not have enough time to see everything. Make sure you take all the stairs at the soldiers and sailors monument, the view is worth it.

My two sons and I were in Indianapolis 2 years ago for the 500. We where down walked around the monument Never new they had a war museum inside and I have lived in Indiana my whole life. Thanks for sharing

I'm a Hoosier I lived in Indiana all my life I live in Lafayette Indiana. I've been to Indianapolis several times and. never knew this museum existed thank you so much next time I get the opportunity. I'm definitely going to head down there and. Check out that amazing museum.

@@TheHistoryUnderground I don't know if you are already going to be visiting this museum. But I highly recommend going to the Indiana military museum. They have quite the collection and. Another museum I recommend called the American Huey museum. They have three are worthy Huey's and are restoring several others.

I spent a good 45 minutes in the Shrine Room alone, when I visited a few years back. The craftsmanship is awesome, the alter breathtaking and the symbolism as powerful as the acoustics. It’s clearly designed as a resonance chamber, it felt like a whisper could echo to the heavens.

Would love to hear and learn more about the Korean War. The so-called forgotten war is very interesting to me and also to hear about the WW2 Vets that also went to Korea. As always, wonderful episode.

Really enjoyed this video. This proves that history should be preserved. We can learn so much just by visiting places like this. I'm really into anything regarding the American Revolutionary war. My girlfriend works at Family Life Ministries. They interviewed one of the last survivors of the U.S.S Indianapolis. Very powerful interview.

Great video! I have relatives that cover 6 different wars, Our two sons are fifth generation U.S. Army veterans. Our youngest son and his wife got married there at the War Memorial in the chapel. The ceremony was amazing!

@@TheHistoryUnderground Have you ever been to the WWII museum in New Orleans? It has been a few years since I was there and, from I can tell, they are always adding to it; it is also very nicely set up. The last time I was there, they had WWII veterans that were at D-Day giving tours and telling their experiences. I could have spent all day in there but I would have been looking at a divorce. Anyway, thank you for your comment and I really do like the content and the aerial scenery on many of your videos is absolutely beautiful. Looking forward to the next stop.
